WEEKEND ROAD WORK: 35th, Delridge

Two notices about road work happening tomorrow (Saturday, January 9th):

35TH SW & SW TRENTON: From SDOT‘s weekly West Seattle Bridge email, this announcement of Saturday work:

This Saturday, Jan. 9, from about 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., crews will be working at the intersection of 35th Ave SW and SW Trenton St to add signal loop detectors. What are signal loop detectors, you ask? They are a traffic detection device that is cut into the road near a signal. Loops are what notify the traffic signal that a vehicle is waiting at the intersection for a green light. So, in this case, after Saturday’s work, when drivers along SW Trenton St pull up to 35th Ave SW, the traffic signal will be able to change such that those drivers can continue on their way a little more quickly.

TWO AREAS OF DELRIDGE: From the weekly Delridge project update:

Weekend roadway paving in Zones B and C on Saturday, January 9

In Zone B, we are planning to pour concrete between Croft Pl SW and SW Myrtle St. Concrete pouring will continue for approximately 1-2 weeks.

In Zone C, we are planning to pour concrete between SW Trenton St and SW Henderson St. Work in this area is expected to be completed next week.

(Tomorrow’s forecast looks good for winter road work.)

TRAFFIC ALERT: Crash at east end of Roxbury corridor

3:03 PM: Thanks to Collin for the photo and tip: SPD and SFD are just arriving at that crash scene at Olson/3rd, east end of the Roxbury corridor. Big traffic backup, he reports. Avoid the area for a while. Police have just radioed that they will have one NB and one SB lane blocked.

3:21 PM: Both northbound lanes are now blocked, per police radio.

3:39 PM: No medic unit sent, so apparently no major injuries; we’ll follow up with SFD.

TRAFFIC ALERT: More West Marginal Way SW work tomorrow

January 5, 2021 6:13 pm
|    Comments Off on TRAFFIC ALERT: More West Marginal Way SW work tomorrow
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

Just got word from SDOT that the emergency tree-removal work will continue tomorrow along West Marginal Way SW, north of Highland Park Way. Seattle Parks was unable to complete the work today, so its crews will be back on Wednesday, again reducing WMW to one lane each way in the work zone. As far as we know, this work will start after 9 am as it did today. The trees are being taken out because they’re considered to be at risk of falling, with the ground so saturated by recent rain.

Here’s why there’s a big tank in the middle of California SW in south Morgan Junction

(Photo sent by Mike)

11:38 AM: If you’ve traveled California SW through south Morgan Junction/lower Gatewood in the past few days, you might have wondered about that big tank in the middle of the street near SW Myrtle, accompanied by a lane closure and work crews. Here’s what we’ve found out: Seattle Public Utilities is repairing more than 55 feet of sewer main. The tank is to hold groundwater as needed; it’s known as a Baker tank. The project is expected to take a month or so. Neighboring residents/businesses were sent this flyer, SPU tells us; they’re looking into our followup question about whether the repairs are related to the extensive redevelopment on both sides of the street in that area in recent years.

5:49 PM: Reply from SPU spokesperson Sabrina Register: “The repair involved an 18-inch clay pipe that was installed in 1950 and showing signs of deterioration. The repair was identified as part of Seattle Public Utilities’ normal process to inspect our pipes to look for signs of deterioration and then make repairs as needed.”

TRAFFIC ALERT: West Marginal Way SW work tomorrow

If you travel on West Marginal Way SW, here’s an alert about work that will mean lane closures tomorrow. From SDOT:

Tomorrow, Seattle Parks and Recreation will be performing emergency tree removal work. Parks will be removing 5 trees on West Marginal Way SW that are at risk of being uprooted due to heavy rains and could fall into the roadway, causing safety issues and unplanned road closures.

Tree removal will start as early as 9 a.m. on January 5 and continue through the afternoon. The trees are being removed approximately 300 feet north of the intersection of West Marginal Way SW and Highland Park Way SW. West Marginal Way SW will be reduced to one lane each way near the work area. People using the corridor should follow posted signs in the area.

ROAD WORK: Delridge project’s plan for the week ahead

Major work resumes tomorrow on the Delridge repaving-and-utilities project preparing for the RapidRide H Line. Here are the key points in SDOT‘s weekly preview:

*Vehicle detection loop installation and concrete work at the intersection of SW Oregon St and Delridge Way SW scheduled to begin as early as January 4. Traffic will be split around the planned roadway median during this work. The following week, traffic will be shifted to the east side.

*SW Brandon St on the east side is scheduled to reopen by (this) week. The west side of SW Brandon St will remain closed for staging.

*SW Thistle St between Delridge Way SW and 20th Ave SW closed as early as January 4th to complete temporary signal work and to demolish and rebuild the sidewalk during duct bank installation. SW Thistle will be local access only.

*Roadway demolition and paving to resume on the west side of Delridge Way SW in Zone A and on the east side of Delridge Way SW in Zone B.

UPDATE: 2 rescue responses for crashes on West Marginal Way SW

11:57 PM: A crash on West Marginal Way SW, near Puget Way, has led to a “rescue extrication” callout and closed WMW both ways. More info as we get it.

12:33 AM: The road has reopened. The crash was described as one car, one occupant, who had to be cut out of the car and was taken to a hospital.

2:30 AM: Now there’s another “rescue extrication” callout for West Marginal, this time in the 6300 block.

2:35 AM: This time, it was quickly downsized. … Southbound lanes are reported to be blocked.

2:55 AM: Two people are reported hurt in this crash. There’s early word it’s being looked at as a hit-run.

11:32 AM: Checking on the victims’ conditions from both crashes and will add that update when we get it. Meantime, here’s the initial SPD summary from the second crash:

A silver sedan was southbound in the 6300 block of W Marginal Wy SW, when it left the roadway and collided with a red sedan in an adjacent driveway. The elderly couple in the red sedan sustained substantial injuries. The unknown driver of the silver sedan fled on foot.

The subsequent search, involving a K9 team, was unsuccessful.

11:45 AM: Here are the victim updates, from SFD spokesperson Kristin Tinsley, with all three of these people in stable condition when taken to the hospital: In the first crash, a man in his early 30s, transported by SFD medic unit; in the second crash, a woman in her early 60s and a man in his late 60s, transported by private ambulance.

UPDATE: Crash at Fauntleroy/Oregon sends 1 to hospital

3:13 PM: Thanks for the tips. A two-car crash at Fauntleroy/Oregon has sent one person to the hospital, and SPD says Traffic Collision Investigation detectives are responding, so this will be affecting traffic in the area for a few more hours. Right now, police say, southbound Fauntleroy and both directions of SW Oregon at Fauntleroy are closed. We’re checking on the injured person’s condition.

3:37 PM: Police tell us at the scene that they believe the white vehicle’s driver ran the light and hit the black vehicle, whose driver is the person taken to the hospital.

4:45 PM: SFD spokesperson Kristin Tinsley says the injured person is a woman in her 60s, in stable condition when transported. The victim’s daughter also has commented below.

5:15 PM: The scene has cleared.
