(Latest image from SDOT camera – refresh page to update)
9:02 AM: We mentioned this in the morning traffic roundup but now have more details directly from SDOT:
SDOT will be briefly closing the Lower Spokane Bridge to all users, including people biking, starting at 9:30 a.m. today. This short-term closure is needed to safely install a missing bumper pad and make sure the two ends of the bridge line up properly when it closes (realign the bridge deck). We expect the work to take about an hour, but it could take longer depending on conditions. The bridge will reopen as soon as the work is safely complete. Thanks for your patience as we complete this important safety fix.
This follows an unscheduled hour-plus closure back on Friday evening (April 4).
9:51 AM: A check of the live camera shows low-bridge traffic moving again.
12:57 PM: SDOT spokesperson Ethan Bergerson confirms, “Both closures were due to a worn-out bumper pad affecting the bridge’s alignment. We successfully replaced the worn-out bumper pad and corrected the bridge’s alignment this morning.”
8:42 AM: According to an alert the NW Seaport Alliance has sent to truckers, the low bridge will close 9:30-10:30 am for repairs. It was out of service for an hour-plus this past Friday evening.

4:05 PM: Thanks for the tips and photos. There’s no SFD callout for it so far, but as shown, there’s been another crash near the Welcome to West Seattle sign toward the southwest end of the West Seattle Bridge.
The images show only that pickup truck, but someone called us saying it appeared two vehicles were involved. Yet another texter says the dividers are pushed out of place – something someone else had reported earlier this afternoon (we advised them to be sure and report it to 911 as that’s a safety hazard) – we don’t know whether that was fixed before this happened.
4:13 PM: We’ve received even more reader photos and reports just in the few minutes since publishing this. One person confirms, “This was the 2nd accident there in the last 2 hours as on the way out there was another van at the side of the road and Jersey Barriers pushed over to the eastbound lanes.”
6:56 PM: Thanks for the tip. The West Seattle low bridge – aka the Spokane Street Swing Bridge – is out of commission at the moment, for all users – the foot/bike path too – so take alternate routes.
8 PM: Live camera shows it’s open again.

8:54 PM: SPD and SPD are arriving at a car-on-side crash at Delridge/Webster. Three people are trapped. Delridge is blocked. Updates to come.
(Added: WSB photos by Jason Grotelueschen)
9:04 PM: All three people have been removed from the crashed vehicle. SFD says all three will be taken to hospital(s).
9:16 PM: Per SFD, one is in serious condition, the other two are less seriously hurt. Police told dispatch they are investigating whether this is DUI-related.
9:54 PM: Added two photos by WSB’s Jason Grotelueschen – above, the scene with SFD and the car on its side, and right over this line, the other vehicle involved; he says its driver was telling police that the other car hit him nearly head-on in the wrong lane before flipping, and that he survived only because he managed to swerve out of the driver’s way.
9:04 AM FRIDAY: SFD says their medics treated three people and ultimately took two to Harborview Medical Center: A 59-year-old man in serious condition and a 45-year-old man in stable condition. A 70-year-old man “did not require transportation to a hospital.” We don’t know who was the driver and who were the passengers; we’re also following up this morning with police.
4:27 PM: Police responded to our inquiry:
According to the investigation, one vehicle was heading southbound on Delridge Way, preparing to turn left onto 21st Avenue Southwest, when a second vehicle traveling northbound swerved into the oncoming lane, causing the two vehicles to collide. Both vehicles sustained significant damage, and one flipped onto its side. The driver of the vehicle that swerved into oncoming traffic was arrested and booked into King County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI).

10:49 AM: Seattle Fire is sending a “rescue extrication” response to the westbound West Seattle Bridge, near the Fauntleroy end, where a driver is reported to have hit a pole and might be trapped in their vehicle, reported to be a (updated) 1999 Toyota 4Runner. Updates to come.
10:53 AM: First arriving firefighters confirm the driver is trapped and will have to be cut out of the vehicle.
10:58 AM: Responders say the westbound bridge is closed at the scene, so if you’re heading westbound, you’ll likely be routed off sooner.
11:03 AM: Firefighters report they have extricated the driver, who’s reported to be “alert and conscious” and will be taken to a hospital. Adding reader photo above, showing the vicinity of where the emergency vehicles are – same area that has been the scene of multiple crashes.
11:21 AM: Police just told dispatch both lanes have reopened at the crash site. The driver was taken to Harborview Medical Center.
12:41 PM: Added another reader photo above (sent by Andrew), just before the wrecked vehicle was removed. SFD, meantime, tells us the driver is a woman in her early 80s, in serious condition when transported.

5:30 PM: Big response for a crash on the westbound bridge near the 1st Ave exit. SFD is extricating one injured person from one of the vehicles. If you’re headed southbound from downtown, staying on I-5 and using the exit that’ll get you to the 1st Ave So. Bridge is a better choice.

Thanks for the tip on this one. It’s also on the westbound bridge, but not what some refer to as “the usual spot” – this is between the crest and the Delridge exit.
Yet another crash of note today – this one is blocking one lane each way on 35th SW at SW Edmunds. No major injuries reported but traffic is affected, so you might consider avoiding the area for a while. (Thanks for the tip!)
6:11 PM: Just went over to check; all clear.
12:29 PM: An emergency response toward the southwest end of the westbound West Seattle Bridge is for a flipped Jeep, per a reader.
12:58 PM: Log shows SFD cleared fairly quickly, indicating no major injuries.
2:29 PM: Thanks to Jackie for sending the photo, which shows that this happened in what’s been a crash-plagued spot; SDOT has said it’s “monitoring” that location, so we’ll check again tomorrow.
6:45 PM: Added above, another reader photo. Meantime, SFD tells us that firefighters/medics “assessed” a 65-year-old man but he did not need to be taken to the hospital.
8:53 AM: Thanks to Collin for the photo and report that one lane is blocked southbound at Olson/3rd.
9:47 AM: No SFD callout, which indicates no injuries of note.
