UPDATE: Police block parts of 35th, Roxbury after gunfire report

(Image from SDOT traffic camera at 35th/Roxbury)

9:58 PM: Police are blocking 35th between Roxbury and Barton, and Roxbury east of 35th, after a report of gunfire in the area, possibly coming from a person in an apartment building. No injuries reported.

10:41 PM: The roads are still blocked. Meantime, officers have reported detaining someone who might have involved.

11:10 PM: Officers told dispatch they were “wrapping up,” after checking the apartment from which the suspected gunfire came, and traffic cameras show the streets open again. We don’t know what if any evidence they found, nor whether the detained person was arrested, but we’ll be following up.

ROAD WORK: Two Sunday notes

First, the 21st/22nd/23rd repaving finished early.

That’s part of the Puget Ridge/Pigeon Point street sections repaved this past week. SDOT had said the work would continue through today; we took the photo Saturday evening and noted the equipment was all gone, then went back this morning to confirm – the work’s done. Restriping and other finishing touches yet to come, of course.

Meantime, SW Genesee at the bottom of the hill between Avalon and Delridge remains down to one lane, alternating traffic, while a new concrete paving panel cures, closing a section of the westbound lane, so be careful in that area and allow extra tie.

FOLLOWUP: Dates set for West Seattle low-bridge closure – April 19 through April 28

**UPDATE: The dates are now April 20-29**

(Low bridge, SDOT traffic camera)

When SDOT first sent the alert last Friday that a low-bridge closure was ahead, it was described as likely being for “about a week” during the window of April 19-28. Today, an update from SDOT – the bridge is expected to be closed to surface traffic for that entire 10-day window:

From Friday, April 19 through Sunday, April 28, the Spokane St Swing Bridge (low bridge) will temporarily be closed to people driving, walking and biking. This closure is necessary because the Seattle Department of Transportation crews have to move the control tower wires from the West Seattle Bridge (the high bridge) to a new underground conduit below the West Duwamish Waterway and replace the control system. These wires are connected to the hydraulic system that opens and closes the bridge. The West Seattle Bridge (high bridge) will remain open during the low bridge closure.

Travelers will need to detour to other routes. During the closure of the low bridge, here are options for reaching your destinations:

Riding the bus: Buses provide a reliable option for travel across the Duwamish Waterway via the West Seattle Bridge (high bridge). They accommodate people walking, biking, and rolling, offering the fastest route without driving. Use King County Metro’s trip planner for route and schedule details.

Riding the Water Taxi: The West Seattle Water Taxi offers direct service to downtown Seattle and operates seven days a week. Large vessels can accommodate up to 26 bikes.

Driving/Carpooling on the West Seattle Bridge (high bridge): The West Seattle Bridge (high bridge) remains open for drivers with no vehicle access restrictions. Note that pedestrians and cyclists cannot use this bridge.

Walking, biking, and rolling: For people who bike, walk or roll, there are several other routes to get around the closure. Check out the SDOT Bike Map to find available bike facilities. For people who walk or roll, we recommend utilizing public transit to reach your destination.

We are offering assistance to people impacted by the closure to use transit with a rewards code available through the TransitGo app. For detailed instructions on how to access this reward, go to this link.

For more detailed information about the closure and how to get around, visit SDOT Blog.

There’s other work ahead too over the next two years that will require “short-term closures,” including more cylinder overhauls. More info about the bridge’s ongoing work is here.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Tuesday info

6:03 AM: Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 9, and spring break continues for Seattle Public Schools and independent schools with similar calendars.

WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES

Morning rain likely, then partly sunny, high in the mid-50s. Sunrise will be at 6:30 am, sunset at 7:51 pm.

UPDATE: Sylvan Way reopens after fire response

(Reader photo, originally uploaded in comments below)

10:24 PM: SFD is fighting what a dispatcher described as a “large encampment fire” off Sylvan Way behind Delridge Home Depot. The response has led SPD to block Sylvan Way in both directions.

(Reader photo sent by Sam)

10:44 PM: They’ve declared the fire “tapped” (out). SFD says no one was hurt.

11:20 PM: Nearby resident Sam says Sylvan has reopened to traffic. Emergency-radio exchanges indicate the remaining unit(s) are wrapping up and preparing to leave.

CLOSURE ALERT: West Seattle low bridge closing ‘for about one week’ later this month

The West Seattle low bridge’s long-anticipated control/communication-system upgrade is about to happen – and when it does, later this month, the bridge will close to surface use – driving, riding, rolling, walking, running, etc. – “for about one week,” according to this announcement today from SDOT, though the exact dates aren’t finalized yet:

Spokane St Swing Bridge (low bridge) control and communications system upgrades scheduled for April 19-28, 2024
Anticipated one-week closure during this time

Planning, design, and construction for the initial phase of the Spokane St Swing Bridge Rehabilitation Program took place from 2020 to 2022. Subsequent phases of this work will continue into 2025. The work taking place in April 2024 will be to upgrade the current control and communications system.

The control system activation work taking place in April will require rerouting the control tower wires from the high bridge to a new conduit beneath the West Duwamish Waterway.

From April 19 through April 28, crews will reroute the control tower wires from the high bridge to a new conduit beneath the West Duwamish Waterway that connects to the motors that open and close the bridge. This operation will require closing the low bridge for people driving, biking, and walking for about one week. We will share more details about the timing of this upcoming closure as planning efforts continue.

To support travelers impacted by the closure, and to help make transit access easier and more affordable, we’ve partnered with King County Metro to make it even easier to ride the bus or West Seattle Water Taxi  with Transit Go Tickets throughout the closure. This offer will provide a daily round trip over the Duwamish while the bridge is closed. To access the offer, follow the directions below using the Transit Go Ticket app and rewards code LOWBRIDGE24. This code will become active on April 19, 2024. The fares are funded by the Seattle Transit Measure, which was passed by voters in 2020.

UPDATE: Crash on northbound 99

12:25 PM: Thanks to Gill for the tip. Northbound Highway 99 near Cloverdale is blocked right now because of the response for a multiple-car crash. Traffic will be diverted off the highway and into South Park (via 14th) until this is cleared. No major injuries reported.

UPDATE: Train trouble on lower Spokane Street

March 26, 2024 11:45 am
|    Comments Off on UPDATE: Train trouble on lower Spokane Street
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

11:45 AM: Trains blocking traffic on lower Spokane Street, beneath the bridge, aren’t unusual – but the one that’s stopped right now may be blocking traffic longer than usual, because it’s having mechanical trouble. Right now it’s blocking both eastbound and westbound traffic on Spokane between 1st and 2nd, so you’ll want to avoid the area TFN.

11:51 AM: Apparently the fears of a long blockage were unfounded – radio exchanges indicate the train’s moving again and the Spokane St. backups are clearing up.
