6:43 AM: Good morning. It’s Presidents Day. Here are the transit/transportation plans for today:

Metro is on a “reduced weekday” schedule

–No Water Taxi

Sound Transit, regular weekday service

Washington State Ferries, regular schedule

–Street parking in city neighborhoods with pay stations – no charge today

Also of note:

–No school all week for Seattle Public Schools (midwinter break) and those who follow its schedule

–Highland Park Way DID reopen last Friday evening, post-slide cleanup

9:48 AM: A late-commute crash on the approach to the elevated Viaduct on NB 99 has just cleared, SDOT says. Traffic stopped for a bit so tow trucks could be deployed.

FRIDAY TRAFFIC/TRANSIT: Highland Park Way closure continues; other updates

6:50 AM: Highland Park Way between Holden and West Marginal remains closed this morning, two days after a major slide; the city announced late yesterday that they expect to reopen it by today’s PM commute. Metro Route 131 remains rerouted.

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

Otherwise, no incidents in/from West Seattle so far this morning.

One note: Seattle Public Schools‘ midwinter break is next week. And Monday is Presidents Day, with holiday-level transit planned, including no Water Taxi service.

7:17 AM: Just tweeted/texted by Metro:

7:55 AM: One SFD unit is responding to a crash reported at 29th and Trenton, a few blocks west of the north side of Westwood Village.

8:34 AM: Via Twitter, Jeremy reports a bus breakdown:

8:53 AM: Watch out for some possible congestion in the 5000 block of Delridge Way SW – several SFD units are en route to check out a possible wall fire at an address on the east/northbound side.

Meantime, we’ll update here, and in a separate story, whenever we get the official word that Highland Park Way hill is open – again, SDOT has said they expect it to be open by late afternoon, before the PM commute.

HIGHLAND PARK WAY SLIDE: SDOT expects to reopen road by Friday pm commute

(WSB photo of cleanup work this morning, taken via long lens from top of hill)

Just in from SDOT: Highland Park Way is expected to reopen “by late afternoon Friday.”

Full update from Norm Mah of SDOT:

Highland Park Way SW will remain closed today and is expected to reopen by late afternoon Friday for the PM commute.

SDOT crews have removed 90% of the material that came down from the hillside on to the roadway, about 2400 tons.

Crews will remove the remaining material tomorrow and will place approximately 50 concrete Ecology blocks (6’ long x 2’ wide x 2’ high) along the western edge of Highland Park Way SW to buttress the hillside.

SDOT thanks the public for its patience while this work is being completed.

The slide happened just before 5 am on Wednesday; no one was hurt, but it caused a 2,008-customer power outage for a few hours.

Meantime, we have photos with a closeup look at the slide zone from pre-cleanup, courtesy of Joe Finelli, Jr.:

THURSDAY TRAFFIC/TRANSIT: Highland Park Way closure continues; other updates

(UPDATED 11:20 AM with latest from Highland Park Way – scroll down)

5:04 AM: We’re starting traffic/transit coverage early because of the continuing Highland Park Way closure between West Marginal Way SW and SW Holden, now in its second day after a slide around this time yesterday. SDOT‘s most-recent update said the closure is expected to continue “through (today).” The closure also affects Metro Route 131; here’s the most-recent information on its reroute.

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

If anything changes with Highland Park Way this morning, we’ll update here, along with any other traffic notes as the morning continues.

6:32 AM: Still no other incidents reported. We’re not the only area affected by a slide; there are slides elsewhere in the region including one closing westbound I-90 in Issaquah and another forcing cancellation of Sounder train service.

6:39 AM: And now we have an incident – eastbound West Seattle Bridge. Conflicting reports between a texter and scanner dispatch; the former says it’s after the Fauntleroy ramp, the latter said it’s “midspan.”

6:48 AM: We have another verification that this is on the eastbound bridge from Fauntleroy, parallel with Nucor. (Backup on Fauntleroy ramp just past 35th is also visible on the travelers’ map video feed.) So if you’re bridge-bound shortly, getting on someplace further east is likely a better choice.

7:04 AM: The feed shows traffic on the Fauntleroy approach is flowing again, so though we haven’t had an official update, it appears the reported crash/stall has cleared. One of SDOT’s bridge cams, the one that can see the west end, is down right now, so that’s complicating things.

7:11 AM: New problem – WSDOT reports a stalled vehicle partly blocking the ramp to I-5 northbound from the eastbound West Seattle Bridge.

8:05 AM: Multiple reports that Delridge is backed up again today, apparently a domino effect from the Highland Park Way closure (we’ll be going over for a look a bit later).

8:15 AM: Bus trouble in Admiral. Metro just sent a 40-minute-late alert saying that the 7:38 am Route 57 “did not operate.” We got a concurrent text from someone saying: “There’s no 7:50 57 or 8 am 56 yet at 47th and Admiral … 25ish people waiting here for a bus, any bus, to downtown.”

11:20 AM: Our photo above is from the Highland Park Way slide scene, earlier this morning. We just checked in with SDOT; no new info on how soon it might reopen, and they’re still expecting that it’ll likely be closed for the rest of today, so for now, plan on an alternate PM route. We’ll publish a separate update before the PM commute.

HIGHLAND PARK WAY SLIDE: PM updates; road expected to remain closed ‘through Thursday’

(TOPLINE: Highland Park Way hill will be closed “through Thursday” per SDOT)

(WSB photos: First two taken ~12:30 pm)

1:14 PM: SDOT now says the Highland Park Way hill is likely to remain closed at least “into tomorrow.” That’s the newest development in connection with the early-morning slide that shut down the busy road between West Marginal Way SW and SW Holden.

Here’s our morning report (thanks again to everyone who texted us when it all began around 5 am); we just went back to the top of the hill for another look, and as you can see in our photo above, there’s lots of activity. Here’s the newest information from SDOT spokesperson Sue Romero:

SDOT continues to work with Seattle City Light at the site of the slide that occurred on Highland Park Way SW. A slide came down this morning above Highland Park Way SW, then a second slide came down, pushing material about 500 feet further, over Highland Park Way SW.

SDOT has cleared some of the material from the lower slide so SCL trucks can gain access. SCL is working to clear some trees that are pushing on some power poles. Geotech engineers are assessing the situation.

We expect Highland Park Way to remain closed through today and into tomorrow as more rain is expected to fall tonight into tomorrow.

Meantime, the power outage caused by the slides, which peaked at more than 2,000 homes/businesses, is over for all but two customers, according to City Light’s outage map, which also has been fixed.

We’ll be updating this story throughout the afternoon, including any related traffic advisories for the pm commute – again, expect Highland Park Way to remain closed TFN, and plan your alternate route and travel time accordingly.

3:13 PM: Bus reminder: “Metro Route 131 continues to be rerouted off of a portion of Highland Park Way SW between SW Holden St and West Marginal Way SW, until further notice.Use the stops on Highland Park Way SW south of SW Holden St or east of West Marginal Way SW.”

Whichever route you plan to use to get home, be aware that the heavy rain has continued this afternoon, lots of water on the roads, so be patient. The WSB Traffic page has cameras for various routes, and you also can check the video feeds accessible from the lower right of the city Travelers’ Information map – browse the feeds on the West Seattle and Greater Duwamish pulldown options.

3:47 PM: We asked City Light’s Scott Thomsen for the assessment of how the slide had affected their installations along HP Way: “The slide toppled some trees. At least one went into the lines, causing the outage. We didn’t lose any poles, but some are leaning over. We plan to monitor the hillside to make sure it has stabilized before we reset the poles. We might have to install some small retaining walls to protect the poles.”

7:04 PM: SDOT just tweeted that Highland Park Way is expected to remain “closed through Thursday.” So DEFINITELY plan morning options, and we’ll track the status during the day.

And the National Weather Service says this is the seventh-wettest February on record.

9:40 PM: Still closed. We checked the top of the hill again after leaving a nearby meeting about half an hour ago; no lights visible down the hill, so crews apparently had quit work for the night. We will start morning traffic coverage extra early tomorrow (5 am Thursday) because the road will still be closed.

THURSDAY MORNING: Our AM updates are here through at least 9 am.

UPDATE: Slide closes Highland Park Way hill; thousands lose power

(TOPLINE: Highland Park Way hill between SW Holden and West Marginal Way SW is closed because of a slide that happened around 5 am)

5:35 AM: A big Seattle Fire response is checking out a slide reported on the Highland Park Way hill near Holden. So far, they’re reporting no vehicles or structures involved, but some of the slide material is actually on the road. One texter reported a power outage; none has shown up on the Seattle City Light map yet. More to come.

5:42 AM: We have a crew headed that way. Meantime, more outage reports, mostly from Puget Ridge. And traffic is being kept off the hill. SFD crews are assessing the slide and whether it’s moving.

5:51 AM: Our crew has arrived and confirmed the road closure. Via scanner, we’ve heard that multiple power poles are “leaning” but intact. The slide is across most of HP Way at at least one point and though most of the SFD units are being dismissed because no rescuing is needed, the closure continues.

6 AM: City Light info for residents says 2,000 customers (homes and businesses) are out.

6:20 AM: SCL and SDOT are at the slide. If you are using Roxbury as an alternative, be aware that the 8th/Roxbury signal is reported to be out – and remember that intersections with nonfunctioning signals become all-way stops. Metro Route 131 is rerouted since it otherwise would use the HP Way hill. Some have reported their power’s back.

6:43 AM: Our crew at the scene has been told the closure will likely last at least through the entire morning commute – City Light is still working to locate the downed live wires, and until that’s done, engineers can’t assess the slide, which will have to be done before cleanup.

7:32 AM: City Light says via Twitter that the peak of the outage was 2,008 customers (homes/businesses) and that service has been restored to all but 380 customers. The hill remains closed.

7:49 AM: For those who asked about Sanislo Elementary on Puget Ridge, our crew went over to check. It does NOT have power but it IS open – the principal tells us that word of the outage didn’t get around in time for any other decisions to be made, and students started arriving. They’re hoping it won’t be too much longer. Now we’re headed back to HP Way hill to see if there’s an update on operations there.

8:26 AM: We’ll have some daylight photos shortly – the slide is out of cameraphone range but co-publisher Patrick Sand is headed back with images taken via long lens. He reports that it looks like a “tangled mess,” mostly across the uphill lanes, though somewhat obscured by fog. No update yet on how long it will take to clear – they’re still in assessing mode. Meantime, remember that having Highland Park Way hill unavailable is continuing to back up other outbound routes.

9 AM: Photos added – here’s how it looks from the top of the hill, with a long lens. (Note the streetlights at top left.)

We’ll continue to update here for now – if it looks like this is going to last for hours longer, we’ll switch to a midday update at some point.

10:03 AM: The power outage is finally on the SCL map. (Screengrab above)

10:23 AM: Thanks to commenters for reporting that most of the rest of the outage has ended – the SCL map confirms that. What we’re awaiting now is an update on how long the Highland Park Way hill is likely to remain closed.

11:59 AM: Still no new info from SDOT, only a reminder of the closure. We are headed back to the top of the hill to see what is (or isn’t) happening.

12:19 PM: Update from SDOT, which we’ll move to a new update soon as we get a new look at the slide zone:

1:15 PM: We’ve now launched a pm report and that’s where we’ll be updating this afternoon and into the pm commute.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Tuesday updates

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

6:48 AM: Good morning! No incidents reported so far in/from West Seattle.

8:01 AM: Still incident-free.

8:48 AM: Had to run an errand downtown for the second consecutive day. This time, leaving just after 8 am, we got to the south end of downtown via the bridge to 4th in just under 40 minutes. Noticed the port trucks backed up on the outside lane westbound, past the 99 overpass. Currently parked on 1st South just north of the West Seattle Bridge onramp/offramp and noticing that 1st northbound is quite sluggish. 4th was better.

9:02 AM: Just crossed the westbound bridge – a tow truck is there for the aforementioned stalled vehicle, and a dump truck is stalled (or otherwise pulled over) right in front of it, so the situation at the 99 offramp is more of a snarl now. Police are on scene.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Monday updates

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

6:39 AM: Good morning and welcome to a brand-new week. No problems reported in/from West Seattle so far.

One on-peninsula traffic alert for today: Jay at the Hill Crest Apartments (east side of 35th SW between Holden and Webster) says crane work there (which you might have noticed on Thursday) is set to continue starting at 8 am today, possibly running until 6 pm but they “hope to be done much sooner than that.”

As for the weather – hard to believe it’s been just a week since our snow day; sunshine is forecast today and tomorrow, temps in the 50s.

And looking ahead: Mid-winter break for Seattle Public Schools and those who follow its calendar is NEXT week (February 20-24).

8:11 AM: Still relatively quiet. Traveled the bridge this past hour on an errand to downtown and back – busy, and bright, but nothing out of the ordinary. Leaving Upper Fauntleroy at 7:10, we got to the south end of downtown (via 4th Avenue S.) in half an hour.

8:20 AM: Traveling north West Seattle streets reminds us that people with Monday trash/recycling collection can put out double today because of the collections missed last Monday. That includes recycling even though today wouldn’t be a recycling day otherwise, SPU said.

9 AM: WSDOT says a stalled vehicle is blocking the right lane on northbound I-5 just north of the West Seattle Bridge.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Tree/branch on road in Fairmount Ravine

February 11, 2017 6:49 pm
|    Comments Off on TRAFFIC ALERT: Tree/branch on road in Fairmount Ravine
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts | West Seattle weather

Via Twitter, Patrick reports a tree/branch down across the west side of Fairmount Avenue, in the ravine between Admiral and Alki. It’s been reported (in off-hours or weekends, road-blocking debris can be called to 911, if necessary). This is a reminder that though the weather has calmed, the National Weather Service still has a Special Weather Statement in effect in our area, warning of this type of risk (slides in particular) after all that rain and snow saturated the ground, with wind as a chaser.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Friday watch

7:11 AM: Good morning! No traffic incidents so far in/from West Seattle.

If you’re using the Vashon ferry dock, Washington State Ferries has the latest on the effects of yesterday’s nearby slide.

Weather: The National Weather Service’s Wind Advisory for the area is now in effect, through 3 pm.

Transit: A cancellation announced by Metro:

7:17 AM: And another cancellation:

7:35 AM: Good morning. The rain is the big challenge so far; no incidents or transit changes reported in/from West Seattle.

8:04 AM: Just got a call (thank you) reporting a crash toward the right side of the crest of the eastbound West Seattle Bridge, involving a truck and car, doesn’t appear to involve injuries. And now we’re hearing it mentioned on the scanner too.

8:10 AM: From SDOT via Twitter:

8:27 AM: SDOT says that crash has cleared on the bridge. Getting to the bridge might be a problem, though – Sue sends word that the Spokane/Avalon traffic signal is in flashing mode. Don’t know whether it’s related but we also have e-mail asking how to get enforcement for cars in the Avalon bus lane “for blocks.”

8:59 AM: If you’re heading for southbound I-5, here’s an alert from WSDOT:

9:50 AM: Avoid West Marginal Way in the Highland Park vicinity (and points north) … lots of water over the road, per multiple reports (thanks!). SDOT is reported to be on scene now.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Wednesday morning updates

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

6:45 AM: Though some snow/slush remains – pending a warming trend that’s on the way – things are getting back to normal today. No school changes. Metro’s back on its regular routes. Seattle Public Utilities‘ trash/recycling one-day delay continues.

8:04 AM Crash on Delridge north of Thistle. NB blocked, says Twitter tip.

8:15 AM: Metro says the Delridge crash is delaying buses.

8:26 AM: SDOT says Delridge is blocked both ways by the crash, though the 911 log shows Seattle Fire has cleared (which indicates no major injuries). We’re off to look.

8:41 AM: SDOT reports, and we just verified, Delridge is now clear.

9:04 AM: Out on a morning errand run, we can confirm that Waste Management IS out picking up today. We’ve seen them in Westwood and Fauntleroy so far. Weather-wise, the snowmelt is accelerating, as we’re now up to a steady rain and upper-30s temp.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER, SCHOOLS: Tuesday morning updates

(QUICK LINKS: School delays hereMetro bus info here … SDOT winter-weather map map here … More traffic cams/links here)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

5 AM: Good morning. No changes this morning from what was announced last night – most schools are on a delayed start today, including Seattle Public Schools (2 hours late) – here’s our list.

Metro says most of its buses are on regular routes (check here).

The temperature is just above freezing, with lots of slush left on non-arterials and sidewalks, so caution is in order. No new weather alerts.

After skipping pickups Monday, Seattle Public Utilities‘ trash/recycling schedule is delayed one day all week, SPU says – so if you are a Monday customer, have your carts out today.

7:42 AM: Relatively quiet morning so far. Hilly streets, not surprisingly, are the trouble spots. Evan reports via Twitter, “30th between Juneau & Brandon is icy! Multiple cars stuck.”

7:56 AM: Even if you’re not on/near a hill, give yourself time to go slowly. Our side street, which was slushy when we last drove it yesterday evening, sounds crunchy with each car going by this morning. And as commenters are discussing, sidewalks might be your biggest challenge, whatever your ultimate mode of transportation.

8:11 AM: Metro says Routes 131 (which serves Highland Park) and 132 (South Park) are back on regular routes. But we also have anecdotes in comments and via text of unannounced bus no-shows or changes in various spots, FYI.

8:22 AM: Josh reports that Delridge/Kenyon light is flashing red (this is one of the lights affected by yesterday’s power outage). Please remember … an out, or flashing, signal = all-ways stop.”

8:38 AM: From the scanner – police are being dispatched to Avalon and Genesee for a report of a jackknifed semitruck. Don’t know whether it’s blocking one, both, or neither, but we’ll head out shortly to look.

image (1)

8:50 AM: Before we could even suit up to get out the door, Matt Collins sent that photo (thank you!), which shows the location as well as the situation – on the Genesee slope between 30th and Avalon. Could take a while to clear. (Added) Here’s the view from the other side, looking east over Avalon and down Genesee, from a texter (thanks!):

IMG_0806.JPG

9:19 AM: Update via text: Genesee is cleared.

Meantime, two school notes – Our Lady of Guadalupe has now changed the plan and will be CLOSED today due to “extreme icy conditions” (OLG is at the highest elevation in the city); Madison Middle School says its tours are canceled.

12:07 PM: As just published in a separate story, SPU is now saying it will NOT get to Monday customers in this area until next week.

WEST SEATTLE SNOW: Monday night updates, and looking ahead to Tuesday

(EARLIER COVERAGE: Monday midday/afternoon here … Monday morning here … West Seattle Snow Day photo gallery here …)

6:35 PM: Tonight, along with any new weather-related incidents, we’re focused on looking ahead to tomorrow – weather, schools, and more.

SCHOOLS: We’ve already started a page for Tuesday school info, and will add whatever more we find out. (8:47 PM UPDATE: Seattle, Highline, Vashon all plan late starts)

WEATHER: While the overnight low might dip below freezing, the National Weather Service says:

Some re-freezing of moisture on untreated surfaces is expected tonight, but it will lack the sheet-of-ice quality that a hard freeze would bring.

TRANSIT: Metro says it’s staying on snow routes TFN. (7:51 PM UPDATE: C Line is back on its regular route, Metro says.)

UTILITIES: Only a handful of West Seattleites are still without power, Seattle City Light‘s outage map shows – if you are among them, be sure to contact SCL at 206-684-3000 if you haven’t already … Seattle Public Utilities plans to pick up trash/recycling/etc. on a one-day-delayed basis for the rest of the week.

*************

9:44 PM UPDATE: The National Weather Service has the snow total – for the past two days, 7.1″ at Sea-Tac Airport, the second-highest February two-day snow total since recordkeeping began in 1945; the record was 9.8″ February 16-17, 1990.

High-school basketball rescheduled for Tuesday: Added to the WSHS games (boys 5 pm, girls 7 pm Tuesday), the Seattle Lutheran HS boys (who have a 16-game win streak) will play at home at 6 pm Tuesday.

Metro buses back to regular routes in this area: Metro says its “South Seattle” zone – which includes West Seattle – is back to regular routing.

10:53 AM: Picking up from our first round of Monday snow-related updates, we’re launching midday coverage, right in the midst of another snow shower. Above, Tami sent the photo from 48th SW uphill (northeast) of Lowman Beach, where a tree is blocking the road.

Elsewhere, wires are down on some roads, and not always easy to see in the snow, so please be careful if you have to go out:

(Added: Kelly Kirkland’s photo of wire woes in Highland Park)

Ferries are back on schedule on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route, per WSF. 1,400+ are still without power in eastern West Seattle.

11:59 AM: Looking more like a snow-rain mix here right now, which means even more peril from branches weighed down with heavy, wet snow:

Changes for tonight: Postseason high-school basketball has been postponed. West Seattle High School games are rescheduled to Tuesday (5 pm boys, 7 pm girls).

Addition for today: West Seattle Golf Course is open for sledding until 5 pm. We have sledding photos from other areas in our West Seattle Snow Day photo gallery – and here’s one from Darryl Wolff, taken at popular Westcrest Park in Highland Park:

12:46 PM: Yes, there’s plowing, sanding, salting happening – this SDOT truck went around the corner by WSB HQ:

IMG_1428

The midmorning forecast discussion from the National Weather Service says, “From Seattle on south, the air mass will warm enough this afternoon for little or no additional snow accumulation at lower elevations.”

1:30 PM: First, re: the comment discussion about whether the USPS is delivering today – yes, they are, and here’s texted, photographic proof:

IMG_9135

Also out on the streets today – SPD, in this case helping with a stalled car on SW Graham (thanks to DD for the photo):

20170206_131002

Something NOT happening today: The mobile blood drive in The Junction has been canceled.

Also – be aware that some businesses/agencies are closed. So far, we’ve only received “open” announcements – like this one from West Seattle Autoworks (WSB sponsor):

WP_20170206_08_28_48_Pro

WSAW’s Todd Ainsworth says, “We’re open, though not at full staff and not all parts suppliers are running…”

More high-school-basketball changes: Tonight’s Seattle Lutheran game also is postponed, as are the WSHS games mentioned earlier.

You’ll want to keep your vehicle well away from snow-laden branches/trees if you can (and be careful what you’re walking under), as we’re seeing the slide-off accelerate as the temperature rises. Meantime, the road’s looking good, so we’re heading out to look around.

2:40 PM: We’ve just been around much of the peninsula, through all three Junctions, through Luna Park and Highland Park, Alki and Admiral, and the big word is: Slush. The main roads are all clear, with dirty slushy snow off to the shoulders.

We’re seeing some sunbreaks, too. (You can see more of our on-the-road photos on the WSB Twitter feed.)

Business updates: Easy Street is closing not only its café at 3 (as usual) but is closing the record store too. … West Seattle Bowl and Highstrike Grill are closing for the day at 4 pmConscious Choice Chiropractic, which earlier planned to open at 3, is just staying closed for the day.

3:01 PM UPDATE: Weather note: No more alerts in effect in our area. … Traffic note: Per scanner, tree down in 6500 block of West Marginal Way SW. (We just went through that area about half an hour ago … mostly bare and wet otherwise.)

3:15 PM: Another traffic note, from AG in comments: “18th Av SW blocked by fallen tree at SW Holden.” (If you’re looking for the SDOT traffic cams, here’s our page with the local ones that are currently working.)

Metro has already texted some cancellations for West Seattle runs this afternoon – and buses are still on reroute, going into the pm commute.

3:54 PM: City Light says the east West Seattle power outage is now down to about 500 homes/businesses, after restoring power to another 1,000. A downed tree is to blame, according to their tweet.

TRAFFIC ALERT: West Seattle Bridge crash

5:51 PM: If you are headed for the eastbound bridge right now – don’t go via Fauntleroy/35th; a crash has backed up traffic. SDOT had said it was only blocking one lane but that’s apparently in the 2-lane section.

FullSizeRender

6:01 PM: The response also is blocking one lane westbound. We’re adding a reader photo that shows the location as roughly parallel with Nucor. So if you’re getting onto the bridge, the Delridge onramp, for example, wouldn’t be affected.

6:24 PM: SDOT now confirms that the eastbound lanes are clear. Inside westbound lane still clear – again, this is on the Fauntleroy end, so if you are leaving the bridge at Admiral or points east of there, you won’t be affected.

7:30 PM: All lanes on the bridge are open again, per SDOT.

P.S. Thank you to everyone who messaged us about this!

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Post-snow Friday updates

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

6:07 AM: What was left of the late-night snow is melting, and reports around the region are that roads are “bare and wet.” Go slow in case of slick spots, though. The National Weather Service says “a wintry mix” of precipitation is still a possibility.

7:03 AM: Still no incidents reported in/outbound from West Seattle. But some are reporting the aforementioned “wintry mix” – give yourself extra time.

8:50 AM: Late-commute trouble on northbound I-5 on the south side of downtown – emergency response at Yesler, in the right lane.

7:02 AM: Good morning. Trouble on northbound 99 as we start – a crash reported just north of the West Seattle Bridge, blocking one lane.

7:06 AM: That crash has been cleared quickly, to the shoulder.

WEEKEND CLOSURE ALERT: If you use Highway 99 north of the Battery Street Tunnel, you need to know about a closure planned this Sunday – SB 99 from Valley Street to the BSTunnel will be closed 8 am-5 pm Sunday (February 5th).

9:11 AM: Trouble at Highland Park Way/2nd – semi-truck trailer has gone sideways. Thanks to John for this photo:

Looks like traffic is getting around.

10:21 AM: Just passed the scene. The trailer has been restored to an upright position and the truck is in the center of the road. Police are still there too. But it looks like it will be clear soon.

2 PM: The Sunday closure of SB 99 north of the Battery Street Tunnel, mentioned above, has been canceled because rain is expected, and will be rescheduled.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: School’s-out Wednesday watch

7:06 AM: Good morning – no school today in Seattle Public Schools and schools that follow its calendar, for the “day between semesters.” No traffic incidents reported in/from West Seattle so far.

7:29 AM: If you’ve noticed that we don’t have consistent camera views above … while SDOT has been upgrading many of the cameras, they also have been changing the web addresses without warning. This morning we discovered that the address where the “midspan” camera was yesterday – seattle.gov/trafficcams/images/WSB_Midspan_EW.jpg – was showing something not on or near the bridge. We’ve reported it to SDOT.

7:44 AM: From the scanner, a westbound lane of SW Alaska is blocked at 40th SW by a crash. No SFD callout so apparently no injuries.

Also, LB informs us in comments that the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth ferry route is back up to capacity, with M/V Kitsap returning overnight – VesselWatch confirms that Kitsap, Issaquah, and Sealth are now on the route.

P.S. We covered the first meeting of the Triangle Improvement Task Force in Fauntleroy on Monday.

7:54 AM: SDOT has fixed the bridge camera, so we’ll return the second bridge view to what’s above.

8:28 AM: SDOT says the Alaska/40th crash has cleared.

9:03 AM: SFD is responding to a crash reported in the 7300 block of Sylvan Way [map], just west of Delridge. Per scanner discussion, Sylvan is icy at that spot, so they’re calling in SDOT to help fix that.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Tuesday watch

6:59 AM: Good morning and welcome to the last day of January. No trouble spots reported in/from our area so far.

Another reminder: No classes in Seattle Public Schools tomorrow (Wednesday); it’s the “day between semesters.”

8:26 AM: Multiple reports of a backup on Highland Park Way. Possibly traffic-signal repair near 2nd SW, according to one.

(UPDATED TUESDAY with SFD’s summary)

Added – reader photo. Truck at left.

4:01 PM: What SFD describes as “a leak from a truck” has blocked off 2nd and Marion downtown as well as part of 1st including the SB 99 onramp vicinity. More to come.

4:13 PM: To be specific about the “onramp vicinity,” SDOT says 1st/Columbia and 1st/Madison are also blocked off. Metro says via Twitter, “Buses are rerouted off of SB 2nd Av. Use stops on 2nd Av, north of Spring St/south of Columbia St.”

4:27 PM: Update from SFD via Twitter:

4:46 PM: Multiple readers are advising that buses are still getting onto the SB 99 ramp at Columbia.

4:52 PM: An SDOT video camera (choose “downtown” on the lower right of this page) is showing the ramp and looks like cars are getting on too – if they come down Columbia, or NB on 1st toward Columbia. Police are blocking 1st on the north side of Columbia and beyond.

4:58 PM: From scanner – crews have stopped the leak and moved the truck to level ground. They’ll be dismissing some crews.

5:07 PM: SDOT says one southbound lane on 1st “from Madison” has reopened.

5:27 PM: All lanes of 1st are now open, says SDOT, but 2nd remains closed.

6:17 PM Metro says SB buses are now getting through on 2nd.

7:42 PM: Not back to normal yet:

ADDED NOON TUESDAY: Here’s the SFD summary of the incident:

On Monday, January 30, 2017, at 3:23 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to the area of 2nd Avenue S and S Marion Street for a battery acid spill from a semi-truck.

The Seattle Fire Department responded to a request to investigate contents leaking out of the back of a semi-truck. SFD’s Hazmat team responded and determined the spilled product to be battery acid. They tested for hazardous materials, applied acid neutralizer and diked the downhill area to contain the spill. Firefighters also stabilized the rear doors of the semi-truck which was damaged by the shifting load.

King County Metro assisted in towing the semi-truck up the street where it was parked on a level surface, preventing further leakage. Firefighters found 11 pallets of batteries and verified that the leaking had stopped.

There were no reported injuries. Seattle Police Department, NRC Environmental Services, Seattle Department of Transportation, and Seattle Public Utilities Spill Response were on-site to assist with this incident.
