West Seattle Crime Watch: Cents-less car prowling

From Regina:

As I was leaving for work this morning, I noticed 2 of my vehicles had been gone through, glove compartments open, papers all over. They made off with a iPod I had tucked under the seat and took most of the change from the ashtray – about sixty cents but left all the pennies (thanks, guys!). I will be checking my neighbor’s surveillance cameras after work, I will post a description of the losers so others can be on alert. I live on 21st & Roxbury [map], and I did leave both cars unlocked, so I take blame for this too. Please remember to lock your doors!

P.S. This is one of the crimes you can report online – find the form here.

Reader report: ‘Go-cart screams along Lincoln Park,’ no 911 response

The start of that clip shows someone riding a motorized go-cart along the waterfront path at Lincoln Park. It’s one of two clips sent by Steve, who says it happened last night, and that he reported it to police, but …

I was very angry about this: The police never showed for the hour I was there waiting after reporting this incident. What’s the point in reporting and “partnering” if the police don’t show?

The walk along the Lincoln Park beach was teeming with pedestrians at sunset last night, which was when I first called 911. Who else would you call when the law is being broken and people’s health is at risk?

First call was at 9:13 p.m.
Second call: 9:52 p.m.
I left park at 10:15 p.m.

In all fairness I checked the WS blog, of course, to see if there might be competing crimes in the neighborhood that would compromise manpower, or if something really big was going on elsewhere in real time. I could find nothing being reported at the above times.

This has happened twice now at different times when I have called the police to come to Lincoln Park.
They don’t show, or if they do it’s long after the fact.

Are there staffing issues? Locally? City wide? Cutbacks after a busy July 4th holiday laden with no doubt overtime? Inaction raises questions. That’s all.

Or is my concern so silly it shouldn’t be taken seriously? After all, it’s just a go cart flying without lights through the night. It IS silly.

Does anyone know how many officers actually staff and cover West Seattle on any given night?
How many units typically patrol the west of 35th Sector between Frontenac and Brace Point (W3)?

I’m sure it’s sufficient given our crime index. But it’s peak party season in the Park and this is when accidents happen.

To the point of “competing crimes” – there is no way to check in real time what else is happening. If it’s something major, yes, we report on it here on WSB, in real time (like the Alki gunfire incident last Friday night). But there are many “life safety” – the police’s priority – crimes that don’t get to that point. The police “incident response” map shows calls (not all – for example, we have been told by SPD media relations, sexual-assault calls will not be shown) starting about six hours after the fact; you can browse this map right now and see some of what was happening yesterday and last night. (Image added 8:43 am – calls from yesterday afternoon/last night – note that the SW Precinct handles South Park as well as WS)

According to the Seattle Parks Code of Conduct, driving a motorized vehicle on a path like this is a rule violation (see 3.2.22). It is also listed as a violation in the Seattle Municipal Code. We will ask police for a response to this, and add whatever we find out.

Lincoln Park zipline attraction? Opponents strategize on eve of Parks’ first public presentation

(July 3 photo: Child playing hide-and-seek while opponents led tour of the potential Go Ape course zone)
By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

The Seattle Parks employees who have been working on the proposed Go Ape zipline/tree swing “treetop adventure” attraction in West Seattle’s Lincoln Park will make their first public presentation tomorrow night, 11 months after the city decided to explore a potential partnership with the company.

Fauntleroy Community Association president Bruce Butterfield confirms that Rebecca Salinas and Charles Ng from Parks’ Partnerships division will be at his group’s July board meeting (7 pm Tuesday) – which he has moved to a larger space at The Hall at Fauntleroy, to accommodate all those interested in hearing/speaking about it. (ADDED TUESDAY: He says Go Ape‘s Chris Swallow will be there too.)

Butterfield (above, standing) also joined a pre-meeting tonight, billed as an “informal gathering” of people who are opposed to/concerned about the proposal. More than 30 people showed up for an organizational/strategy session at C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor). They say that will help them be ready for tomorrow night (more on their discussion a little later in this report).

FCA contacted Parks about the proposal after we asked Butterfield what if anything he and his group had heard about it, while we were working on the research that led to our original June 28th story about the plan, which this “project summary” document says has been in the works since last August. (Last Thursday, in his first public statement on the proposal – read it here – Parks’ longtime acting superintendent Christopher Williams described to the process so far as “internal due diligence.”)

Ahead – what’s happened so far, what we’ve learned about Go Ape’s basic course design and construction process, and toplines from tonight’s meeting:

Job talk: South Seattle Community College’s hangar hosts roundtable with Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden

(Photos by Nick Adams for WSB)
South Seattle Community College‘s hangar at Boeing Field was the setting this afternoon for an education-and-jobs roundtable featuring visiting Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden. Aviation Maintenance Technology students work and learn at the hangar, making it the perfect setting for roundtable’s topic: “Community Colleges and Jobs” – one that’s close to Dr. Biden’s heart, since she is a community-college teacher and advocate (here’s her bio). Among the participants, Boeing employee and graduate Jason DeBuys (next to Dr. Biden, center right) was among those who took a turn with the mike:

While the discussion proceeded, Dr. Biden’s husband, Vice President Joe Biden, was a few miles north at the Westin Hotel downtown, helping raise campaign cash for U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, who herself visited SSCC’s West Seattle campus last October (with fellow U.S. Sen. Patty Murray) to announce a job-training program (WSB coverage here).

At right in that photo is Vatrone Vann from Vaupell, a commercial-aerospace supplier (also listed in the program as representing corporate training at North Seattle Community College). More from today’s event, ahead:Read More

West Seattle musician Monty Carter mourned after river accident

An accomplished musician who lived in West Seattle is mourned tonight by family, friends, and colleagues. Chelan County authorities say 43-year-old Monty Carter drowned on Sunday after wading into the Wenatchee River to cool off after a day of hiking. The Seattle Times (WSB partner) reports on the drowning, and on some of Mr. Carter’s background, including his work at The Northwest School, coaching basketball and teaching music over the years, which is also mentioned in this Wenatchee World story. Paul Dolejsi, pastoral assistant for music at Holy Rosary in Seattle, tells WSB that Mr. Carter worked for him as an accompanist until 2006, and remembers him as “an incredibly gifted pianist (who) was always kind and helpful with our singers and musicians.” He adds, “It is a terrible tragedy that someone so kind and talented should slip from our grasp at such a young age. He will be greatly missed.”

AUGUST 5th NOTE: Received word today:

His students and friends are getting together to pay tribute to him at 3 pm today(Aug. 5).The service and reception will take place at St Nicholas Hall at the upper campus of Lakeside School.

Followup: $30,000 bail for West Seattle police-car-ramming suspect

A judge has set bail at $30,000 for the 37-year-old West Seattle man arrested Sunday morning after four Seattle Police cars were rammed during a pursuit along Alki/Harbor Avenues (WSB coverage here). That’s according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which has until Wednesday to decide on charges against the man, who’s being held for investigation of assault and attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle. As we reported on Sunday, the man has a criminal history that in recent years included charges of domestic-violence assault and speeding in a school-crosswalk zone; court documents made public this afternoon add that he has a “history of progressing assaults and using his car as a weapon.” The documents also have more details on his arrest last Thursday, for which, as we also reported Sunday, he spent a day and a half in jail; he is alleged to have “purposely rammed a civilian’s car 4 to 5 (times) repeatedly …” The documents also say he told officers, after being advised of his right to remain silent, that he “has been off his medication.”

Update: Helicopters, traffic, SSCC event, all part of Bidens’ visit

(PHOTO UPDATE: Dr. Biden with SSCC president Gary Oertli; photo by Nick Adams for WSB)
FIRST REPORT, 4:01 PM: As noted here this morning, Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden are in Seattle this afternoon/evening for events – he’s headlining a fundraiser downtown for U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell; she’s participating in an education roundtable hosted by South Seattle Community College at their Boeing Field aviation facility. That’s why you’re seeing helicopter(s) over eastern West Seattle (thanks for the texts). And the motorcade is temporarily closing I-5 – you can expect that in the other direction around 7 pm, according to SPD.

4:28 PM UPDATE: The event with Dr. Biden is under way; we’ve substituted a new photo atop this update. More coverage to come!

6:59 PM UPDATE: One more round of eastbound bridge backup as the vice president heads back to the airport (thanks to Neil for the photo). We’ll have a separate story with more on the SSCC-hosted event in a bit.

Coyotes in Seola Beach: New sighting; semi-followup

Two weeks after our first report about a federal coyote hunter dispatched to Seola Beach in southwest West Seattle after two dog deaths, no official update yet on the U.S. Wildlife Services‘ “fact-finding mission” (as a regional manager described it) there – we just checked back and learned all the local managers are out of state this week. However, we did get a coyote-sighting report from that same area this morning, sent by Jamie:

My husband came across coyotes in mid-hunt early this morning, about 5 am, while walking out of our house and to his car. He saw them snatch a small animal; he was pretty sure it was a cat.

We live right at the top of the Seola Beach ravine/greenbelt at 35th and 108th. The exact spot when the coyotes confronted the woman and her dog last fall. Thought I would report it in case anyone in the area misses their cat today…

It’s been a busy day for lost-and-found pet reports, but we haven’t heard anything from that area. Meantime, the state’s Living With Wildlife – Coyotes informational page includes info on what other animals coyotes eat – and important advice on what to do if you see one (in short: scare it away).

Followup: Stolen wagon replaced; Megan & Dylan say ‘thanks’

Two weeks ago, a West Seattle mom named Megan e-mailed a Crime Watch report (read it here): Somebody had stolen the little red wagon that she used to transport her toddler son, and groceries (they are carless). Along with the general outrage came multiple offers of a new wagon for them, both in comments and via e-mail. Megan gratefully accepted the offer of a West Seattleite who was first to e-mail us, minutes after we published our story, asking to buy a new wagon for her anonymously. We in turn asked Megan to consider sharing a photo when the new wagon arrived; this morning, she sent the photo, with this update:

Good morning. I recently received the new wagon (at the end of last week), and it’s great! It is all-terrain and very easy to control.

My dad set it for me yesterday, and brought me a bike lock which should at least deter thieves. I’ve attached a picture of a very excited little boy!

I never heard a thing about what happened to the stolen wagon.

Please send our thanks to the donor. We really appreciate the genorosity! Please also send our thanks to the honorary donors. We’d also like to thank you, the West Seatle Blog Editors!

Best Wishes and Many Thanks,
Megan and Dylan

We did hear from someone last week who said they thought they had seen the stolen wagon in The Junction. We couldn’t find Megan’s contact info at that moment to pass it on to her. Anyway, we’re grateful, too, for the caring and generosity expressed in this instance and so many others.

West Seattle sighting: Free Range Mercantile mobile store-to-be

If you’ve driven Fauntleroy Way SW through Fairmount Springs in the past day-plus, you might have noticed that green bus labeled Free Range Mercantile. Kaela did, and sent a note wondering if we knew the story behind it. We had only just noticed the bus ourselves hours earlier, but after a little sleuthing overnight, we tracked down the info: You’ve heard of food trucks? Meet a retail truck! West Seattle entrepreneur Mary Summers, who you might know from CAPERS, is launching a mobile store. Reached via e-mail, Mary told us, “I’ll be selling sustainable goods, domestically sourced and fairly traded. Still filling in a few categories, but all useful items: brushes, brooms, tools, laundry soap, dish towels — home and hardware. This was my first weekend off after having worked at Capers for 16 years. A whole new adventure.” Mary hasn’t set an opening date yet for Free Range Mercantile – she just got the bus painted and found that “parking space” – but she expects to announce the date soon.

West Seattle Monday: Lincoln Park zipline; NDNC at skatepark; SSCC hosts Second Lady at Boeing Field…

“A small piece of guerrilla art that should be appreciated” is how Laura describes the flags you see in the photo she shared – maybe 100 or so, each one reading simply “LOVE,” placed at Luna (Anchor) Park on Duwamish Head. Anyone know the story? Let us know! Meantime, after a stunning sunset and a thunderous night … a busy day ahead. Here’s what’s on the schedule:

WONDERING ABOUT THE BRIDGES? NO PLANNED CLOSURES THIS WEEK! The master list of regional closures – see it here (scroll way down to “West Seattle”) has nothing for 99 *or* the Spokane Street Viaduct this week. (Just the West Seattle Summer Fest closures in The Junction from Thursday night till Sunday night.)

WEST SEATTLE COOKING CLUB: This week’s theme, “15 Minutes or Less” – though the meeting will likely last longer! – bring your easy-to-make creation to Beveridge Place Pub (6413 California SW) at 3 pm.

DR. JILL BIDEN VISITS SSCC FACILITY AT BOEING FIELD: South Seattle Community College‘s aerospace facility at Boeing Field gets a high-ranking visitor today. It’s not a public event, but here’s the announcement, as an FYI:

Dr. Jill Biden, Second Lady of the United States, is visiting Seattle as part of a national Community College to Career tour, highlighting successful industry partnerships that are preparing students to succeed in the workforce. Dr. Biden, a longtime educator and community college teacher, will join Seattle Community College leaders, industry leaders in aviation-aerospace, maritime and manufacturing, along with successful graduates, in a roundtable discussion about jobs in our region.

Her event at 4:30 pm is scheduled while her husband, Vice President Joe Biden, is in Seattle for a Sen. Maria Cantwell fundraiser at the Westin downtown.

LINCOLN PARK ZIPLINE OPPONENTS’ INFORMAL MEETING: With the first public presentation of the Seattle Parks/Go Ape proposal (first reported here June 28th) planned at Tuesday night’s Fauntleroy Community Association meeting, those opposed/concerned about the plan have announced an “informal meeting” tonight at C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor; 5612 California SW), 5:30 pm. Read more about the meeting on the Preserve Lincoln Park website.

NORTH DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL: This month’s agenda is here – and it includes a discussion of concerns at Delridge Skatepark, which is the planned location for the meeting (Delridge/Genesee), 6:30 pm.

‘Pollution has a face’: Seal Sitters announces Alki Beach cleanup

From Seal SittersRobin Lindsey this morning:

Seal Sitters and Alki Community Council will be sponsoring a cleanup of Alki on Saturday, July 21st from 9 am-noon. Peggy Foreman from NOAA will speak about the dangers of trash and derelict marine debris shortly after we assemble at the Statue of Liberty (61st Ave SW and Alki Ave SW). This event will be in honor of West Seattle seal pup Sandy, who was found dead, entangled in derelict fishing line off the Edmonds pier earlier this spring. You can read Sandy’s story on Seal Sitters’ blubberblog.

Countless thousands of marine animals (including seals and sea lions, whales and other cetaceans, sea birds and turtles) die each year from trash and marine debris in our waters. Plastics and storm runoff contaminates our waterways and all creatures (from the smallest of plankton to the majestic orca) that lives there. We encourage everyone to join us and protect our sea life.

A copy of the flyer is posted on the website for download if anyone would like to print out and post a copy at their school or place of business.

You can find the download link in this story on the Seal Sitters site – where you’ll also find a link to RSVP, which is requested so they know how much cleanup equipment to have on hand.

West Seattle weather: Overnight lightning and thunder

If you were reading the comment sections after the sunset photos we published last night – here and/or on Facebook – then you saw local meteorologist Patrick K‘s alerts about thunder/lightning and this was no surprise! Thanks to those who sent photos – top, from Timothy Olson; next, from Rob A. Johnston of Walkabout Wolf Photography:

Both those photos were taken in Arbor Heights. Lauren tweeted this one from “over Beach Drive”:

While we first noted thunder at 11:41 pm, via Twitter, the big show wasn’t till more than an hour later. As for today’s weather? Sunnier later, says the forecast.

West Seattle weekend scenes: Spectacular sunset; ‘perfect beach day’

The WSB inbox yields some spectacular scenery tonight. First, Debra Salazar Herbst shared the top view of the spectacular sunset that’s just now waning. Then, similar cloud formations highlighted this photo shared by Jamie, who titled it “Perfect Beach Day!”

A later view of the sunset, from Chris Fruitrich:

Chris says at least 50 people were watching from the lookout point in North Admiral at the intersection of Seattle and Sunset! (added) David Hutchinson‘s view from Alki:

Ahead, Rachel‘s earlier image of the sunset, plus a weather note:

1 week till West Seattle Garden Tour 2012: The highlights!

Last year, her garden was part of the West Seattle Garden Tour … this year, author/gardener Lorene Edwards Forkner is the guest speaker, and her presentation on “The Handmade Garden” is included in your ticket to the WSGT, one week from today. The centerpiece is of course a guide to, and admission to, nine fabulous West Seattle gardens. The map’s in your ticket book, which you can buy at local outlets OR reserve online right this very moment (go to this page on the Brown Paper Tickets website).

Proceeds support local nonprofits, which in turn is why the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce named the WS Garden Tour “nonprofit of the year” this year. The ticket book and poster art (right), as mentioned before, is by local artist Sheila Lengle, and during the tour, you can meet her at the Pollinators’ Paradise garden, noon-4 pm, where she’ll be happy to sign your ticket book or tour poster (many asked if the poster’s for sale – this year, it is!). She’s also displaying her work and selling some of it through a silent auction. If that’s not enough, you can also check out this year’s raffle – $5 ticket for a chance at a 5-foot granite bench, cooking class for up to 10 people, garden-design consultation, and more (here’s the full prize list). We’re so enthusiastic about the Garden Tour, we’re one of the sponsors again this year. Even if you’re planning a West Seattle Summer Fest visit that day, you can tour the gardens before and after – 9 am to 5 pm, next Sunday, July 15th.

West Seattle weekend scene: Lizard on a leash

Yesterday pirates, today … a lizard on a leash, photographed on Alki by Chas Redmond, who reports that it’s a black-throated monitor named Hades.

West Seattle Crime Watch: Hit-run on SE end of Admiral Way

From Josh:

Last night at approximately 1:30 am my wife and I witnessed a hit and run accident on Admiral Way.

We had just merged onto Admiral Way from the lower bridge route. I noticed behind me a black sedan swerving as it approached my rear at a very high rate of speed, once onto Admiral Way I merged over to the far right lane. After changing lanes I noticed the black sedan behind me could not maintain a lane and had struck the median where the bridge off ramp and the lower bridge off ramp meet; I slowed down as my wife watched behind us. The black sedan then picked up speed at a very high rate while driving on the shoulder; at this time I was pulled off the road near the 3300 block of SW Admiral Way. As the car picked up speed in the shoulder lane, I told my wife “he’s going to hit that car parked on the shoulder”; two seconds after I said that, the black sedan slammed into the parked car and a huge plume of smoke went into the air. After witnessing the crash I turned my car around and went to go see if the driver was okay as we approached the black sedan, the car pulled onto Admiral Way and fled the scene; the car the black sedan hit had sustained serious rear-end damage. At this time I was able to identify the car: late ’90s Black Ford Taurus WA plate ABV—-. As the Ford went up the Admiral hill, an immense amount of smoke followed behind the car. At this time I called 911 to report the incident, by this time I was parked in the Safeway gas station. While on the phone with the 911 operator my wife and I saw the black Ford came from the southbound side of 41st Ave SW and the car pulled back onto Admiral Way and proceeded west.

I haven’t heard or seen any updates in regards to this incident, but I thought the West Seattle Blog should be made aware. Also I want the victim of the incident to know that they have two witnesses if they should need them.

SPD’s time-lagged “incident response” map hasn’t worked for several days, so we have no way to look up whether a report was filed, but if you were the victim, you should be able to find out from police. (Josh provided the full plate number to police; we only publish the first part if a case is in the early stages.)

West Seattle traffic alert: Westbound Spokane St. Viaduct to reopen 4:30 pm

SDOT says the work that was to close the westbound Spokane Street Viaduct for the entire weekend is finishing sooner than expected and they should have the SSV open around 4:30 pm. The ramp from northbound I-5 will reopen first; the ramp from southbound I-5 second; then the Columbian Way ramp from Beacon Hill.

Notes for today: Bridge closure; Farmers’ Market sales; more

July 8, 2012 11:42 am
|    Comments Off on Notes for today: Bridge closure; Farmers’ Market sales; more
 |   West Seattle news | WS miscellaneous

Coverage of the police chase/arrest pre-empted our morning preview but here are a few reminders: First, the westbound Spokane Street Viaduct is still closed (scheduled to reopen by early Monday morning), so you still can’t get to the West Seattle Bridge from I-5 or Beacon Hill; you CAN get to it from 99. Second, today’s a special day at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market – many vendors are offering sales/discounts; 44th/Alaska, till 2 pm. Third, WSB sponsor Little Rascals Preschool has an open house, 1-4 pm (details here). More on the calendar.

Update: West Seattle chase, arrest after 4 police cars hit

(Photos by WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand)
FIRST REPORT, 8:56 AM: Thanks for all the tips! We are working on info right now- it apparently started in Alki and ended by the bridge. No injuries reported but witnesses say it was quite a sight.

(Police with suspect’s vehicle at north end of Delridge)
9:14 AM UPDATE: The chase ended on the north end of Delridge by the west end of the low bridge, where there’s still a sizable police presence, as there is on 56th in Alki. Police by the low bridge say it started with an attempted stop for aggressive driving. Via e-mail, Jennifer tells us what she saw where it ended:

At approximately 8:20ish this morning, my husband and I witnessed an attempted police barricade at the intersection of Harbor and Spokane. At least 6 police cars attempted to block the intersection with their cars and portable “tire shredders” (I don’t know what they’re really called.) Shotguns drawn, the officers watched as a bluish-gray SUV came tearing up to the intersection and upon seeing the barricade tore through the dirt parking lot on the NW corner. After fishtailing several times in the dirt, he turned and fled down the left-hand lane of WSB on-ramp at what appeared to be a sedate 35-40 mph with a long line of officers in tow (strongly reminiscent of the OJ chase). We lost our visual at this time.

9:31 AM UPDATE: The Traffic Collision Investigation Squad – which investigates major crashes – is going to handle both cases, which means traffic implications at both scenes; 56th SW is blocked off south of Alki, which is where we are right now. Officers at the Alki scene say they believe at least 5 cars were hit by the suspect.

10:24 AM UPDATE: At the other scene, we have gone back to confirm, the main traffic impact is that you can’t turn onto southbound Delridge from eastbound Spokane St. under the bridge. Southwest Precinct commander Capt. Steve Paulsen was there and gave us the newest information: It all started at Don Armeni – where the driver, he says, was behaving aggressively toward patrol cars in the area and driving erratically. At first they followed him west along Harbor/Alki to try to stop him – he rammed officers’ cars in the 56th/Alki vicinity mentioned earlier, and then the pursuit headed back east on Alki, to Harbor, under the bridge, and finally ended when they boxed him in at the north end of Delridge (photo above). Capt. Paulsen confirms no one was hurt and says the suspect is being held for investigation of vehicular assault.

2:34 PM UPDATE: Lots of new details in a lengthy update just published on SPD Blotter. Police say the suspect is a 37-year-old West Seattle resident who was “arrested and booked for hit and run” recently; their account doesn’t offer additional details but we’re doing research now to seek more information on that. The SPD report also says 4 police cars were hit – the one we photographed (top of story) was a lieutenant’s car, they say, and the other three were hit just before police stopped him on Delridge south of Spokane.

7:11 PM UPDATE: The suspect was booked into jail this afternoon. Jail records show he was arrested the morning of July 5th – last Thursday – for hit and run and reckless driving, and was released on Friday afternoon. Those charges are in Seattle Municipal Court, where he also has a history of charges including, in the past three years, domestic-violence assault, violation of a domestic-violence court order, speeding in a school-crosswalk zone.

2 weeks till ‘Stuff the Bus’; you can help WestSide Baby sooner

At West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) today, barbecuer extraordinaire Michele cooked up barbecue lunches to raise money for WestSide Baby, whose board member Amy Daly-Donovan was there, sporting the traditional yellow T-shirt in honor of WS Baby’s big “Stuff the Bus” diaper drive, now just two weeks away – Sunday, July 22nd (10 am-2 pm, AmericanWest Bank parking lot at 40th/Alaska in The Junction).

Even if you missed the barbecue, there are other ways to help WS Baby assist local families in need. For one – you can have a diaper drive to collect diapers that’ll count toward the “Stuff the Bus” goal. Here’s how. Or, you can participate in someone else’s diaper drive – for example, Center Studio in downtown White Center is offering a diaper-drive yoga class at 8 am on Saturday, July 21: “Bring a package of diapers and enjoy 90 minutes of pure yoga bliss,” says proprietor Lonjina Verdugo. Her studio also is collecting diapers through the 21st, if you just want to drop some off sooner.

Thriftway is having another WestSide Baby-benefiting barbeque on the 21st, too, by the way – 11 am-2 pm. It all goes toward a goal of 50,000 diapers – which will be matched two-for-one by the National Diaper Bank Network. (You can also buy diapers for WS Baby online via its Amazon Wish List.)

Cruise ship anchored off West Seattle (for a day): ‘The World’

ORIGINAL REPORT, 9:23 PM SATURDAY: Heading homeward across The Viaduct tonight, we noticed that unusual sight – a cruise ship anchored off West Seattle – and detoured to Seacrest shortly thereafter for a photo. It’s “The World,” basically a floating condo building – its units are privately owned residences. This Seattle cruise-ship schedule says it’ll be docking at Pier 66 downtown Monday-Tuesday, so it’ll be anchored through tomorrow till it can move to that pier, after another ship spends the day there tomorrow while ending one 1-week cruise and starting another.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: Russ Walker sent word that The World had sounded its horn and signaled it was heading in to dock as of about an hour ago … and in comments, Kevin confirms it’s now at Pier 66.

Junction development-site business updates: Mind Body Spirit, Super Supplements, Rocksport, Rubato

Four updates on businesses losing their Junction locations because of the impending start of Equity Residential construction (Alaska/California/42nd):

MIND BODY SPIRIT’S NEW LOCATION: Walking in The Junction the other day, we noticed Mind Body Spirit appeared to have cleared out of its storefront on the southwest edge of the future Equity Residential development site – but there was no sign. Now, there is (thanks to Brian Presser of TouchTech Systems for the photo!) – it says MBS has moved north to 3258 California SW, “above the West Seattle Natural Medicine clinic.”

SUPER SUPPLEMENTS’ LAST JUNCTION DAY: It’s been six months since first word that Super Supplements is moving to the old Blockbuster location at 6451 Fauntleroy Way SW (just east of California SW), Today is their last day in The Junction; they will be closed till their scheduled reopening on Friday (July 13th), with a “grand opening” event planned for July 21st.

ROCKSPORT AUCTION: As first reported here in May, Rocksport Bar and Grill is closing after the final day of West Seattle Summer Fest, Sunday, July 15th – no new location, they’re just going out of business. The Rocksport website now has information on the auction they’d mentioned would be held – it’s set for 10 am July 24th (after an 8 am preview) with James G. Murphy Co., the same famous auctioneers who handled the auctions for other local longtime venues including the Charlestown Café last year and the Corner Inn in 2008.

RUBATO RECORDS: No new location yet, according to their Facebook page, which says they’re also closing after July 15th.

OTHER BUSINESSES: We published this recap/update eight days ago, after AAA confirmed its Jefferson Square move. As for when construction of the two-building Equity Residential project will begin – our inquiries still haven’t been answered. Online city records do show they’ve applied for a demolition permit.
