Update: House fire response in 7700 block of 18th SW

On the scanner, we’re hearing firefighters arriving at the scene reporting light smoke. We’re on the way to the scene, 7700 block of 18th SW (close to Holden). 6:43 PM UPDATE: Some of the units are being canceled. 6:55 PM UPDATE: Verdict from firefighters – candle in the house got too smoky somehow. Firefighters wrapping up and so are we.

Update: Fire call on Sylvan Way = ‘food on stove’

6:57 PM: Busy, busy day/night for firefighters. Now a single-family-residence fire call in the 6500 block of Sylvan Way (map). We’re en route. 7:04 PM: First crews arriving suspected “food on stove,” per scanner – at the scene, we’re trying to verify; definitely not a big fire, but lots of smoke being ventilated right now. Also note that Sylvan Way eastbound is blocked at the moment. 7:08 PM: Verified – food fire. Should be wrapped up shortly.

Update: Delridge tree/power-line fire; thousands lose power

(As of 6:20 pm, 99% of those affected had the power back. At 1:15 am Tuesday, the rest went on)

4:56 PM: Checking on a fire call in the 6900 block of Delridge (map) and – may be coincidental, or not – a report of a power outage at the West Ridge Apartments. We’re also getting multiple reports via Twitter and e-mail of power flickers in other areas; scanner ace Katie tells us the 6900 block of Delridge incident is reported as a burning transformer.

5:11 PM UPDATE: Apparently another transformer fire, per the scanner. Big traffic trouble, according to our crew on the scene. Police and fire are working to keep people away from the area. Another update – we’re now being told at the scene that this started when a tree came down and snapped a line, sparking fire(s). You can see the tree in this photo:

The power will be out until Seattle City Light can repair the damaged line, fire crews tell us at the scene.

5:21 PM UPDATE: Lights are out at Delridge/Orchard and Delridge/Myrtle – compounding the traffic trouble. And in comments, as well as via Twitter/Facebook, we’re getting indications the outage is fairly widespread – reports from Westwood and Highland Park as well as Delridge vicinity.

5:30 PM UPDATE: Just checked with City Light – 3,700 customers (homes/businesses) affected by the outage right now. No estimate yet for when they’ll get the power back on, but we have seen more SCL crews arriving in the area. SCL has an official news release out about this – see it here.

6:03 PM UPDATE: No updates on the repair situation so far. Have substituted better photos from our official camera, for the early ones sent in via BlackBerry. Also added the one immediately above – note Engine 87 – that’s not a regular West Seattle engine; because so many WS crews were at the industrial-district fire (we’ll be adding photos of some of them!), crews from elsewhere shifted into our area.

6:10 PM UPDATE: In comments as well as FB and e-mail, we’re hearing from some folks who just got their power back.

6:20 PM UPDATE: City Light reports via Twitter that all but 37 customers (homes/businesses) have their power back – the remainder may be out for more than five additional hours, while repairs are done.

6:44 PM: Here’s the brief SCL online wrapup. Thanks again to everyone who has shared information via comments, texts, phone calls, e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, etc. – that provides a much more thorough picture of what’s happening in situations like this than is possible even to see with on-scene reporting plus the utility’s own reports, plus fast word as things change and are resolved. Here’s how to reach us 24/7.

10:07 PM: Thanks to Dietrich for sharing video shot as the incident unfolded – it’s more than 7 minutes long, but a little more than halfway in, you will see some of the flames (shot from down the block):

1:48 AM TUESDAY: Via Facebook, Phil tells us the last pocket got its power back at 1:15 am – after more than eight hours without it.

Update: Shed fire on 25th SW blamed on ‘smoking materials’

(Video added 12:26 am)
ORIGINAL 10:46 PM REPORT: The call’s listed as a “garage fire” in the 5000 block of 25th SW (map) – but Seattle Fire Department has sent a fair amount of units. One neighbor tells us she’s seen a lot of smoke, though it seems to be dying down now. No word of any injuries. We’re off to check it out. 11:36 PM UPDATE: Back from the scene. It was actually a detached shed behind a house; the incident commander confirmed nobody was hurt, but had yet to talk to investigators re: the cause (we’ll check in the morning). From what we could see from the street, though, it was still smoldering, and firefighters were still putting water on it.

UPDATE, 1:08 PM THURSDAY: SFD spokesperson Helen Fitzpatrick tells WSB the fire is blamed on “smoking materials” that weren’t discarded properly; damage is estimated at $7,000.

Update: Van fire on westbound West Seattle Bridge

(Photos by Christopher Boffoli)

Original report 11:42 am: Just checking on reports of a car fire in the westbound lanes of the West Seattle bridge. We’ll post more details as we have them.

Update 12:11 pm: SFD has the fire out. Westbound lanes of the bridge are now open, though moving slowly as the right lane is restricted at the West Seattle end of the bridge (just before the intersection of 35th) while police wait for removal of the burned vehicle. It appears the fire was in a commercial van which burned completely. There are no reports of injuries.

Update 2:46 pm: Thanks to those who e-mailed us earlier this afternoon to report that traffic was again moving smoothly. Also, thanks to WSB’er Chris for the cameraphone video of smoke billowing from the van:

Followup: 23rd SW garage fire accidental, ‘electrical malfunction’

The Seattle Fire Department has just announced the cause of this morning’s 6 am garage fire in the 5400 block of 23rd SW – “accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction.” Their update adds, “Damage estimate: $100,000.” Here’s our original breaking-news coverage with photos and video; the video above is shared by our friends at KING5, sent to them by viewer “edgallo“; here’s the last shot we took before leaving the scene this morning, looking into the gutted garage as the smoke cleared:

Update: Garage burns in 5400 block of 23rd SW, no injuries

(Added top photo 6:47 am, sent from Belvidere by anonymous contributor; photo below was added at 6:27 am – Wendy Hughes-Jelen photographed the smoke from High Point)

6:15 AM: On our way to the house fire call in the 5400 block of 23rd SW. If you’re hearing/seeing choppers, it’s TV. This is just east of Delridge, near/at the intersection with Brandon (map). 6:21 AM: Fire is “knocked down” per scanner – but the smoke could be seen from quite some distance, according to some of the people who’ve called (thanks!). 6:30 AM: “A large garage with vehicles inside” is what burned, according to SFD’s Helen Fitzpatrick, who says nobody was hurt – everybody got out of the adjacent house OK. 6:36 AM: Here’s what’s left of the garage, which is behind the house:

In case you wondered – this is NOT affecting traffic on Delridge, which is open and running just fine. 23rd is blocked, but it’s not a major through street at that point anyway. One wall of the garage is still smoldering. 7:02 AM: The media briefing at the scene (we’ll add that video when it’s back at HQ) has mostly reiterated what we’ve already reported – nobody home; contents of garage a loss (but exactly what was in there is still being sorted out). The family who lives there was home at the time and called in the fire. Investigators are working to find out how it started.

7:58 AM: The above video clip is Battalion Chief Jay Hagen, who spoke to media at the scene. Here’s also a short clip of firefighters still hosing off the smoldering garage:

11:25 AM UPDATE: No word yet on the fire’s cause.

Video: West Seattle marina fire ‘accidental’; $200,000 damage

(Scroll down for newest information – 1:11 pm: SFD has determined fire was accidental)

(Photo substituted at 5:46 am for cameraphone photo we had earlier – this was taken before fire was out)
FIRST REPORT, 4:35 AM: There’s a big response right now to a boat-fire call in the 1300 block of SW Spokane, and we have a few reports of a loud explosion-like noise heard from northeast West Seattle right about the time it was reported – we’re checking it all out right now. It’s at the Jim Clark Marina.

4:50 PM: We’re en route to the scene – scanner traffic indicates that this is affecting traffic in the area, even train traffic, which has been shut down by Burlington Northern. Scanner says “two houseboats are totaled” so far in the fire, and also indicates the fireboat Leschi is involved in fighting the fire. WSB’s Patrick Sand has just arrived in the area and even before reaching the marina just called to say “fire is still visible.” (added – the video he shot on arrival)

5:03 AM: Patrick came over the low bridge and IT IS OPEN – for those who were worried. The flames are now subsiding but still a lot of smoke. Now the scanner (which we’re monitoring at HQ) says three houseboats were/are involved. At the scene, Patrick says it appears some sheds at the marina were involved too – sunrise is still an hour away so the damage will be more fully visible then.

5:13 AM: The “houseboats” reported on the scanner are more like covered slips, Patrick is being told at the scene, where SFD public-information officer Helen Fitzpatrick has arrived to work with the media. She tells us **no injuries**. Some of the fire units are being cleared from the scene; the fire is mostly out.

5:20 AM: Adding a cameraphone photo atop the story (that’s a fireboat lit up at the back of the shot); we’ll have video back at HQ in a bit. We asked SFD’s Fitzpatrick about the reports of a “boom” just before this was reported; she says the Fire Department’s heard a lot about that too but it’s way too soon to tell what that was – investigators will have to do their work figuring out what caused this. The official summary so far is two “boat houses” burned (NOT “houseboats” as per earlier scanner traffic) and one boat (photo above shows smoldering debris). The fire was fought from both land and water (the fireboat Leschi was called out) – and if you’re passing by, as a Twitter question reminds us, you may notice firefighting foam on the Duwamish.

6:50 AM: We’re going back shortly for a daylight look at the scene – scanner indicates police have just reopened the surface street(s) that were blocked off in the marina’s immediate vicinity (again, NOT affecting low-bridge traffic).

7:14 AM: SFD’s Fitzpatrick has just updated the damage totals from the fire: One boat burned, one boat was damaged by fire, a third boat sank; one boathouse was gutted (see our photo) and the two adjacent ones were damaged. The firefighting foam on the water, she notes, is biodegradable. No word yet on how the fire started.

7:55 AM: We’re back at the marina now that the sun’s fully up. The iPhone photo above is the burned boat from the shore east of the marina – we’ll have a closer photo a bit later but that’ll do for now. Port of Seattle Police are here as well as a few remaining fire and citywide-media crews. (Next two photos added 9:22 am – burned boat, plus damaged boathouse next to debris from destroyed one)

11:37 AM: Still no word on the cause. SFD has posted its complete summary of other details here.

1:11 PM: Fire investigators say this was an accident: “fuel vapor in the bilge of a 36-foot boat was ignited by a spark from electrical equipment, & caused explosion.” Damage total is estimated at $200,000.

(Monday night photo by Tony Bradley)
New information this morning about last night’s fire in the 9000 block of 22nd SW, southeast of Westwood Village (WSB coverage here). We checked with Seattle Fire Department spokesperson Dana Vander Houwen to see why rotating fire crews had kept watch on the scene overnight – not the case with most fires – when this one had been extinguished fairly quickly. She explained that there was some concern this might reignite, because of what investigators now know about its origins: As the incident commander told us at the scene last night, it started as a small kitchen fire – but that was hours earlier. SFD was not called; the resident thought the kitchen fire was completely out, no problem. Instead, it reached up into the attic through a light fixture, where it smoldered for hours until the big burst of smoke and flame that led to the fire call just after 7 pm. And as a result, Vander Houwen says, it did a lot more damage than might have been the case if firefighters had been called to help with that first, small fire: “No matter what, even if you think it’s a small fire – call us, we’ll send a crew, and they can take a look. Fire can get to places where you can’t necessarily see it.” Damage from the attic fire that ignited last night because of that first kitchen fire is estimated this morning at $70,000.

Video: ‘Smoky kitchen fire’ in 9000 block 22nd SW

(Photo by Tony Bradley, substituted at 8:52 pm for our earlier cameraphone photo)
ORIGINAL 7:12 PM REPORT: On our way to check on this “fire in single family residence” call (here’s a map of the location, which is southeast of Westwood Village). Via Facebook, Charmaine reports “lots of smoke, firetrucks and roof on fire!” And via Twitter, we have a second report of “lots of smoke.” 7:31 PM UPDATE: From the scene: Incident commander says this was a “smoky kitchen fire,” nobody hurt, out now, and many of the units are pulling out. Till they clear, though, avoid Delridge/Barton, where Barton was blocked off because of the response. ADDED 8:11 PM: Video from the scene:

Update: West Seattle garage fire was arson, no arrest(s) yet

(Photo shared by anonymous contributor)
Just in from Dana Vander Houwen at the Seattle Fire Department, regarding the fire that destroyed a garage in the 5100 block of SW 98th (map) this morning (WSB coverage here):

Fire investigators determined that the garage fire that occurred this morning was intentionally set. They estimated that the damage totaled $52,000. The fire extended to a vehicle and also caused some damage to several nearby structures.

Seattle Fire Department Investigators are working with the Seattle Police Arson Bomb Squad, who will take the investigation from here. We ask that anyone who may have information related to this incident call the Arson Alarm Hotline at 1-800-55-ARSON. If people see any suspicious activity taking place they should call 911 immediately.

No one was hurt, but the smoke could be seen from miles away, and the flames burned so high, they were seen from the Vashon ferry (see the video clip in our first report).

Early morning fire guts garage behind home west of Marine View

(Above photo added 7:53 am, shared by anonymous contributor)

In the 5100 block of SW 98th (map), by the water downhill from Marine View and south of Fauntleroy/Endolyne, that fire brought out a big early-morning response – and even a TV chopper. The fire destroyed a garage/storage building behind a home; the house also has a bit of smoke/soot/charring on one corner as a result. Nobody was home; remodeling/renovation appears to be under way at the site. A neighbor’s fence was damaged too. No word yet on how this started; no injuries reported. ADDED 9:11 AM: LB Bryce from Vashon e-mailed WSB to share this video (thank you!), showing how visible this was from the Fauntleroy-Vashon ferry route:

(Saturday photo with from-above view of 36th SW firefighters, e-mailed by ‘Seattle’)
Following up this morning on two fires covered here over the weekend: Seattle Fire Department spokesperson Dana Vander Houwen says the fire on 36th SW in South Admiral on Saturday afternoon (WSB coverage here) was accidental – “caused by a malfunctioning natural gas water heater that ignited nearby combustible material. The damage estimate was $20,000.” No one was hurt and the fire was out fairly quickly. (As for the smoke-seen-for-miles South Park fire covered yesterday – as just added to the original story, she says the cause is “undetermined” and damage totaled $2,000.)

Updates: House fire in 3400 block of 36th SW

 |   West Seattle fires | West Seattle news | WS breaking news

ORIGINAL 4:23 PM REPORT: Scanner indicates it’s indeed a fire in the 3400 block of 36th SW (map), though how big, we don’t yet know. On the way.

4:31 PM UPDATE: Via Facebook, Eric says he’s a block away and not seeing smoke. The scanner indicates the fire is now “tapped” and some units are being canceled. Christopher Boffoli is en route to cover for WSB and we expect to hear from him shortly.

4:39 PM UPDATE: Christopher sent the photo we added above. He says a bit of smoke was visible from the eaves but confirms the fire’s no longer active. Awaiting info on what happened and confirmation that no one was hurt.

4:58 PM UPDATE: Confirmed, no injuries. Christopher reports that one resident made it out safely and that the fire is believed to have started in the basement; he adds the first-floor joists are still smoldering so there’s a bit of smoke. The fire investigator has just arrived so we won’t know the cause till later. But note that 36th is closed between Hanford and Hinds till the trucks clear.

Firefighters make quick work of small fire in High Point house

In case you heard the sirens and wondered – we just checked out the scene of a house-fire call in High Point, at 34th/Juneau. Firefighters are mopping up after making quick work of a small but smoky fire inside a closet. Nobody was home at the time; nobody hurt.

Video: Flames char newly unfenced mini-park by The Hole

Thanks to Josh Rogers for sharing his video of a startling scene right next to The Hole on Tuesday night – big flames from a short-lived incident that was on the 911 log as a “brush fire.” We headed that way from Alki after getting a text about it, but it was long out when we arrived – the location was obvious, though since even in the dark, the blackened street sign and burned plants were clearly visible. This is the “mini-park” recently unfenced as part of some work around The Hole, the long-stalled 39th/Fauntleroy development site once known as Fauntleroy Place. We’ll be checking with Seattle Fire Department later this morning to ask about the cause. 2:38 PM: According to SFD’s Helen Fitzpatrick, the firefighting crew didn’t detect anything suspicious about the fire, so a marshal wasn’t called out, and the report only boils down to, brush fire, quickly extinguished. Here’s what the site looked like this morning:

Updates: West Seattle house fire, northwest of The Junction

(Scroll down for newest info)

(top photo added 5:15 pm, thanks to Patty, who called 911 after seeing the smoke – next photo was our 1st one in, thanks to LeeAnne, who saw it from blocks away)

ORIGINAL 4:33 PM REPORT: On our way to the 4500 block of 48th SW (map), where crews are on the scene of a house fire. More to come. We’re told at least one helicopter (likely TV news) is in the area – so if you’re wondering about the chopper, that’s what it’s about. 4:46 PM UPDATE: Still fighting the fire. No word yet if anyone hurt. We’re on scene. They’ve called for a few more engines. The scene is close to Ercolini Park. Still smoky. A public-information officer is on the way to gather details for us and other media crews. 4:55 PM: Still lots of smoke – this is as close as media is being allowed – the house you see is immediately south of the one with the fire:

No indication of any injuries. A medic unit is on scene, as is SOP for fires, but there’s no indication they’re treating anyone. 5:03 PM: Sarah sent this photo taken behind the house:

Our crew on the scene has checked out that same angle from an alley where you can see the back of the house – you can see a hole burned through the roof, but the smoke has stopped, so crews are making progress. The PIO has arrived so we should have more official info soon. 5:14 PM UPDATE: According to SFD’s Dana Vander Houwen, the house was empty – nobody was living there, no furnishings, so nobody hurt. Major damage to basement, attic, rear of house. (video added)

Investigators will work into the evening to figure out the cause.

(Thank you VERY much to EVERYONE who texted, called, tweeted, FB’d and e-mailed to let us know about this and/or share photos and info as we rolled out – we cover breaking news 24/7/365, and your tips are vital.)

ADDED 9:27 AM FRIDAY: Vander Houwen says investigators traced the fire to overheated electrical wiring, so it was ruled accidental, damage totaling $90,000. Also, we wanted to add one of the photos taken by Ilona Berzups showing the firefighters “behind the scenes,” so to speak – at one point more than 50 were on this scene, and the support work done to make sure they can safely do their job is always interesting to watch:

Update: 2-car fire near Fairmount Park was accidental

July 14, 2010 9:16 am
|    Comments Off on Update: 2-car fire near Fairmount Park was accidental
 |   West Seattle fires | West Seattle news

That’s the aftermath of a fire that burned two cars in the 3900 block of SW Brandon (map) early this morning. We checked with Seattle Fire spokesperson Dana Vander Houwen after a TV news report early today suggested this was being investigated as a crime – she says that’s NOT the case; the fire was accidental – cleaning supplies stored in the trunk of one car corroded some wiring and ignited flames, which spread to the second car before the fire was put out. No injuries.

Update: Fire call a smoky scare

ORIGINAL REPORT, “FIRE IN SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCE,” 4800 BLOCK 51ST: Not far from where we’re headquartered for the weekend at The Junction – everyone heard nearby Station 32 roar out – we’re on the way to the scene. 4:18 PM UPDATE: Just a scare. The self-cleaning oven somehow came on, residents returned to house full of smoke. No damage.

Your official introduction to West Seattle’s newest ladder truck

(Seattle Fire Department photo)
As best we recall, the first media report about the new Ladder 13 came in this report by Seattle Weekly’s Mike Seely last August. We’ve mentioned it a time or two since, most recently in our report last week on the South Park Bridge closure-plan meeting, during which SFD mentioned its imminent deployment from Highland Park’s Station 11 as potential backup for South Park once its bridge closes and cuts off quick access from the other side of the Duwamish. And today, the Fire Department itself is officially introducing Ladder 13 on its Fire Line site. As you’ll see in the SFD update, its main purpose is to make sure our area has enough coverage despite the increased traffic expected during the most intense road construction coming up between here and downtown/SODO – where some crews come from during major responses. You’ve probably seen Ladder 13 (unmarked) around West Seattle, as its crew drove around to get acclimated in the past few months.

Fire call at Providence Mount St. Vincent

Just in case you saw the fire response to The Mount within the past hour, or the “4 RED” call on the live 911 log – Christopher Boffoli checked it out; firefighters told him it was a small fire in an elevator exhaust-fan motor. No injuries but some smoke, so that’s why – as shown in Christopher’s photo – they had to bring in fans to clear the air.

Update: Cigarette-sparked fire at Delridge/Thistle building

(Photos by Christopher Boffoli, added 12:50 pm)
11:37 AM: Christopher Boffoli checked out the call in the 8400 block of Delridge (map). Big response but ultimately a very small fire: Fire Department crews at the scene told him that “improperly extinguished smoking materials” outside the building burned into the crawlspace. ADDED 12:50 PM: Added photos. Christopher reports, “The firefighters told me this could have been a much different story. You could actually see on the ground outside of the building where cigarette butts had ignited the mulch (below) and smoldered right into the building’s crawl space. They said it looked like it had been burning for a while and if that fire had spread to the evergreen bushes above and/or if it had been at night when people wouldn’t have so readily smelled and seen the smoke, that it might have been a much bigger fire. They said the landlord was coming out to repair the door the SFD broke down to get in and that they were going to encourage him to provide a receptacle outside for people to put their cigarette butts into.”

Big callout, small fire east of Morgan Junction

If you heard the sirens about an hour ago – here’s what it was all about: A “fire in residence” call that crews made short work of, in the 6500 block of 39th SW (map). Heading back from a visit to the Arroyos whale, Christopher Boffoli caught the callout and checked it out for WSB. As his photo shows, there was a fair amount of smoke, but the fire itself was relatively small, and nobody was hurt: He talked to one of the residents who was home when it started: “She said she heard a crackling sound coming from the kitchen and went up to find black smoke coming out from under the kitchen sink. She ran and got the neighbors who tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher. They said they thought they were successful but the fire sprang back to life. They’re not sure how the fire started but it was believed to have been electrical and possibly the garbage disposal.”
