(WSB photo from 2008 Fauntleroy Fall Festival)
FESTIVAL TIME! Pumpkin-painting is a Fauntleroy Fall Festival tradition – one of the activities you’ll find during the FFF 2-6 pm today. A schedule of other highlights is here, including musical performances and the Seattle Civic Dance Theatre.
NATIVE PLANT SALE: Fall is the perfect time to plant – and natives are the perfect choice. You can buy some 10 am-4 pm today at a plant sale that the West Seattle Wildlife Habitat Project is helping to host, with a portion of the proceeds going toward the group’s purchase of plants for the wildlife garden at Seacrest. The sale site is near West Seattle PCC (WSB sponsor), at 3223 47th SW (map).
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: 10 am-2 pm, today and every Sunday, 44th/Alaska. Here’s the latest Ripe ‘n’ Ready fresh sheet, featuring kiwis!
3RD ANNUAL NIA CLASS TO BENEFIT NORTHWEST HOPE AND HEALING: Be at Youngstown Arts Center (4408 Delridge) at 10 am to join the NiaDivas in raising $ for NWHH, a West Seattle-founded organization that helps newly diagnosed breast-cancer patients. Find out more about Nia here, and about the NiaDivas here.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: 10 am-2 pm in The Junction, as always. Here’s today’s Ripe and Ready fresh list; watch @NFMASeattle on Twitter for pics and sightings.
BOARD GAMES! Today’s the day for the first Board Game Afternoon presented by Friends of Southwest Branch Library — all ages, all skill levels, just come to the meeting room upstairs at the branch (9010 35th SW; Google Street View above) between 1 pm and 4:30 pm. Members of the Friends will bring some games and will teach any you don’t know; you’re welcome to bring your favorite board game(s), too.
ALKI BEACH 5K WALK/RUN: More than 1,200 people are signed up, we hear – and you can still do same-day registration if you get to Alki Bathhouse at 8 am. The run (from the Bathhouse to Anchor Park, and back) benefits Northwest Hope and Healing, which supports newly diagnosed breast-cancer patients as they struggle to continue the practicalities of life while dealing with their new fight for survival. (We’ll be tweeting pre- and during-race photos at @westseattleblog – you don’t have to be on Twitter to see a Twitter feed, just click that link.)
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: 10 am-2 pm as always, 44th/Alaska, and watch @NFMASeattle on Twitter for tidbits once the market opens. (No Ripe and Ready list online today, sorry!)
TIBBETTS CENTENNIAL SERVICE: It’s been a big year for West Seattle churches celebrating 100th anniversaries, and the big party for Tibbetts United Methodist Church is today: Regional Bishop Grant Hagiya will preside at the 10 am service, during which former pastors will be recognized, and a gala banquet will follow the service. More here (including the latest on plans for the church’s next big rummage sale, in early October).
Just shot that video in The Junction while checking on setup for today’s West Seattle Junction Car Show (co-sponsored by local businesses including WSB), 8 am-4 pm along California SW between Genesee and Edmunds, which is closed (as is SW Alaska between 42nd and 44th) for the duration:
Not only did more than 100 cars pre-register in the past few months, but organizer Michael Hoffman from Liberty Bell Printing tells us this morning that so many showed up for day-of signups that traffic was backing up all the way to Fauntleroy Way! In addition to seeing classic cars, there’s entertainment along the way, and a square dance scheduled in Walk-All-Ways around 1 pm, plus the Oh Boy Oberto hydroplane is parked near Cupcake Royale/Super Supplements. Admission’s free but bring a few $ for raffles with great prizes. Also in The Junction, the West Seattle Farmers’ Market is happening 10 am-2 pm as always – today’s special event, tomato-tasting (postponed from that stormy Sunday a couple weeks ago) – and here’s today’s fresh sheet. We’ll add a few more car-show-setup photos here shortly and will be reporting “live” from The Junction most of the day – see you there (and for the rest of today’s West Seattle events/activities, here’s the WS Weekend Lineup). ADDED 8:32 AM: Here are more of the cars, after they parked in place (diagonal along both sides of the show zone on California):
And here’s the aforementioned Oberto hydro:
Our next update will be in a separate report – we’re on our way back down to set up for the day at show info HQ at California/Alaska.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: Even though the tomato tasting’s now postponed for a couple weeks, the market’s on, rain or shine, its managers say. 10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska. Here’s today’s Ripe ‘n’ Ready list; check for market bulletins/updates on Twitter at @nfmaseattle.
PEACE POTLUCK: West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice has its monthly meeting tonight at Alki UCC (61st/Hinds), starts at 6 pm, with potluck at 7, everybody invited. More info on the group’s website, or contact John Repp at jmrepp@comcast.net.
MODECO FLATS’ OPEN HOUSE: Modeco Flats is a new condo building near Westwood Village — one of our newest WSB sponsors — and it’s proud of a four-star “Built Green” rating that it says is a first in West Seattle. Features (listed here) include stainless-steel appliances and bamboo floors. See for yourself at an open house today, 1-5 pm. 8826 25th SW (map); more info here.
The special event scheduled for tomorrow’s West Seattle Farmers’ Market – tomato tasting – has been rescheduled because of expected stormy weather, according to a note from Chris Curtis at the Neighborhood Farmers’ Market Alliance. It’s now scheduled to happen Sunday, September 20th.
BENEFIT HAIRCUTS: Starting at 9 am, proceeds from haircuts done today at Christopher’s Salon in Morgan Junction (7009 California SW) will go toward helping the owner with medical bills from a recent health crisis. Tickets also are being sold for a benefit raffle; the drawing is now set for September 7. (10:45 am note: We have gone to the salon twice since 9 am and no one is there – it’s closed – not sure what’s going on, but if you are interested in helping, call before you go to see if they’re open – 932-1760.)
“REINVENT YOURSELF” WORKSHOP: Seven local entrepreneurs are presenting this event (a WSB sponsor) starting at 8:45 today at Merrill Gardens (also a WSB sponsor; 4611 35th SW). If you didn’t register in advance, you can do so at the door – full details here.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: 10 am-2 pm as always – here’s what’s on the Ripe and Ready list this week.
LAST DAY BEFORE LIBRARY SHUTDOWN: After today, Seattle Public Library branches are closed for a week because of city budget cuts, followed by the Labor Day holiday, so if you need to get something done, today’s your last chance till Tuesday, Sept. 8th. West Seattle has four library branches (Southwest, Delridge, High Point, West Seattle/Admiral); locations and hours can be found here.
“MARCH FOR YOUTH”: This isn’t happening in West Seattle but the invitation extends citywide – a march and rally by and for those concerned about youth violence. The march starts at 2 sites at 3 pm; full details here from the Rainier Valley Post.
(Photos by WSB contributing journalist Kathy Mulady)
If you haven’t been to West Seattle Farmers’ Market yet today … as always, it continues till 2 pm, with a profusion of late-summer flowers, including sunflowers and gladiolus.
The next special event at the market, by the way, is Tomato-Tasting Day, two weeks from today, with the Zucchini 500 races a week after that.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: Not only will fruit and vegetables abound at today’s market (10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska, map) — here’s the Ripe ‘n’ Ready lineup — but fresh fish is in the spotlight too — Loki says via Twitter that it’s selling its last fresh Alaskan salmon of the season.
DELRIDGE PRODUCE CO-OP MOBILE MARKET: Third day of its second 4-day week, which means you’ll find them today next to Cottage Grove Park (map/address), 11 am-3 pm. The photo at left is from Saturday’s session, with rainbow carrots among the offerings again. If you’ve missed our earlier reports, this is a four-week experiment to see if Delridge can support an enterprise that would offer fresh, healthy food, explained here, and while it’s in the experimental stage, the produce is free (just fill out a quick survey!).
BENEFIT FOR NURSES’ TRIP TO SENEGAL: Tonight’s your chance to support nurses Syd and Susie‘s trip to provide health care in Africa (previewed here) by donating supplies and/or money – and the place to do it is The Bohemian, starting at 5:30 pm.
More in the West Seattle Weekend Lineup.
TEAM TRACY: West Seattleite Tracy Dart and the legion of friends known as Team Tracy are fundraising again today to fight breast cancer, which she’s been dealing with for more than a year (and reports she’s now been cancer-free for two months!): They’re walking in the local Breast Cancer 3Day again next month — Tracy is being joined by 11 women, and with a fundraising minimum of $2300 each, they need to raise $27,000, which goes to the kind of research and care that Tracy says saved her life. Today they’ll be raising $ in a tent outside West 5, 11 am-5 pm, as a prelude to a fundraising concert at Easy Street tonight at 8, with local bands Stevedore and Bend (21+, cash only, $7 cover, proceeds from sales of beer donated by Georgetown Brewery and West 5 also benefit Team Tracy).
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: Also in The Junction, it’s market day – 10 am-2 pm; here’s the link to the latest list of what’s fresh.
“DOG DAYS OF SUMMER”: In Morgan Junction, West Seattle Thriftway is the place to go today for three things: 1st, think your dog should/could be a star? West Seattle-headquartered CityDog Magazine is back at WST for its Cover Dog Search, noon-3 pm. (Full details here; last year’s WST winner, Cohen, went on to become the Cover Dog!) Bring — or buy at the store — pet food to donate to West Seattle Food Bank, whose clients have hungry pets, too. And from 11 am-3 pm, the Humane Society’s big bright-yellow Maxmobile will be on site with adoptable pets.
“THE MUSIC MAN”: It’s not really blowing the plot of this classic musical if we show you how the Twelfth Night Productions (WSB sponsor) version ended last night at West Seattle High School:
Even in a darkened theater, there’s no mistaking the Seattle Schools All-City Band, directed by Marcus Pimpleton, who’s led the music program at Denny Middle School and is adding Chief Sealth High School duties this fall. They, and the “Music Man” cast of 50-plus (with a live orchestra), brought the sold-out house to its feet (as the video shows), and you have four more chances to see the show: 3 pm today and next Sunday, 7:30 pm next Friday and Saturday. Advance tickets are available online.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: So much summer fruit is at its peak, and that’s some of what you’ll find at the Farmers’ Market today, 10 am-2 pm; here’s the “Ripe ‘n’ Ready” list.
CUB SCOUTS’ CAR WASH: Scouts don’t just go for woodsy, outdoorsy activities – you’ll also find them washing cars sometimes, like noon-3 pm today at Alki Auto Repair, where Cub Scout Pack 799 from the Arbor Heights area is having its annual car wash. What’s it cost? Donations, says assistant cubmaster Craig Harrold (who shared that photo from the “Crossover” event that’s held at Camp Long to “close the Cub Scout year,” he explains).
HOLY ROSARY CENTENNIAL BLOCK PARTY: 100 candles on the birthday cake for yet another West Seattle church, and today’s block party (42nd SW will be closed alongside the church/school) is the next big event for Holy Rosary‘s 100th birthday celebration. 1-4 pm, with picnicking, treats and – according to online discussions of the event – classic cars evoking the parish’s bygone days.
10 am-2 pm, 44th and Alaska, the West Seattle Farmers’ Market rolls into August; peppers and potatoes are on the “what’s new” list within the Ripe and Ready rundown (see it here). Via Twitter, we also learn that Loki Fish Company plans to bring newly arrived whole fish; there are often other sightings, close to market time, tweeted by Farmers’ Market management at @NFMASeattle. Meantime – for anyone planning on checking out the Skillet street-food trailer while visiting the Farmers’ Market – not only won’t it be there today, as noted on its website, but Skillet may not be back in West Seattle any time soon, at least not according to an e-mail exchange shared by John L, in which Skillet proprietor Josh Henderson told him they were going to concentrate on their weekend catering business for now; we have sent Henderson a note asking for confirmation, no reply yet.
ALKI ART FAIR, DAY 2: 10 am-5 pm on the promenade. Here are a few scenes from Day 1.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: 10 am-2 pm in The Junction. Here’s the “Ripe ‘n’ Ready” list.
FREE SUNDAY YOGA: 11 am-12:15 pm at SoundYoga (WSB sponsor).
AUTHOR EVENT AT CAPERS: Judy Lane and Robert Maughan will read from and sign their new book Keiko & the Crow, noon-2 pm.
HIGHLAND PARK COMMUNITY BARBECUE AND KICKBALL: 2-6 pm, Highland Park playfield, presented by Highland Park Improvement Club.
That’s just part of it – the full Sunday slate is in the West Seattle Weekend Lineup.
We’ve already mentioned it’s the day to “Stuff the Bus” for WestSide Baby – 10 am-2 pm at the Farmers’ Market (we’ll be there for “live” updates). Also – the Mediterranean Fantasy Festival is in day two:
Thanks to Dina Johnson for sharing photos from today’s Day 1 – that’s Shamandura with her 8-year-old granddaughter Princess Tori – here’s West Seattle dancer Mirabai:
The festival continues at Hiawatha from 10 am to 9 pm today. (ADDED SUNDAY NIGHT – Two Hiawatha scenes from Sunday – also both courtesy of Dina Johnson – first one is Lisa Yasmine, West Seattle bellydancer, and Katia Sahar completing their duet … second one, knights in semi-shining armor)
GARDEN TOUR: Today’s also the day for the West Seattle Garden Tour – 9 am to 5 pm, self-guided tour of eight residential gardens, with admission price including Ciscoe Morris‘ noon lecture at The Kenney. Ticket info here.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET: Looking for a deal while you’re there dropping off diapers for “Stuff the Bus,” or vice versa? Here’s today’s fresh sheet.
The first two aren’t even ABOUT West Seattle Summer Fest (day 3, hours away, 11 am-7 pm) but we have posters on our side of the tent so we’ve been asked…
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SUMMER OUTDOOR MOVIES ON THE WALL? The series, co-sponsored by WSB and other fine local businesses, starts next Saturday, in the courtyard between Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) and Dr. Wolff. Here’s the official site with the full list and the cool poster (both in the right sidebar).
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT SUMMER OUTDOOR CONCERTS AT HIAWATHA? We’re also co-sponsoring this new series, which starts Thursday, July 23. The lineup is on the series’ new website. (but you can get a taste of tunes on the Hiawatha east lawn THIS Tuesday, 7 pm, at the traditional West Seattle Hi-Yu Concert in the Park featuring the fabulous West Seattle Big Band AND the celebration of the first honorees in the new West Seattle Volunteer Recognition program). Next:
WHERE ARE THE RAT CITY ROLLERGIRLS? On the north end of the festival, not far from the California Stage, is where you’ll find their dunk tank, east side of the street. Now to the east-central part of the festival, the “community tent”:
WHERE’S THE DELRIDGE PLAYGROUND BOOTH? Holli sent that photo along with this explanation, after some folks saw the preview about the (heart) Delridge T-shirts and rushed over in hopes of buying:
Our booth is located on Alaska Street beside Supper Supplements, facing Cupcake Royale and Swee Swee Paperie. The confusing part is that our generous sponsor providing the booth, WS Nursery, has a huge banner along the top of the booths. We had several gardening questions today that we couldn’t answer …
Our volunteers will be there Sunday from 11am – 7pm. You can still buy T-shirts ($15). We have all our building volunteers, but could use some help preparing food.
The big playground-building day is this Friday! Next Summer Fest question:
WHERE DO I CATCH MY BUS? Many are running east of the festival. Just be sure to check the rider alert on your route before you leave – and print it out.
IS THE FARMERS’ MARKET STILL HAPPENING DURING SUMMER FEST? Yes! Today, as always, 10 am-2 pm. Here’s the list of what’s new.
10 am-2 pm at 44th/Alaska, it’s the West Seattle Farmers’ Market, as always – go here to see the “Ripe ‘n’ Ready” list for today.
(photos added just after 2 pm)
Out in The Junction for the West Seattle Farmers’ Market‘s 10th anniversary bash – huge crowd – but a couple things you might want to know if you haven’t been yet: The free berry mini-sundaes just ran out, after – according to the servers – they gave out about 600 in the first two hours of the market. There are unannounced freebies here and there – be sure to stop by the West Seattle Junction Association booth at the southwest entrance, where you’ll find free kids’ T-shirts (adults’ T-shirts with The Junction logo are $10) — Linda from Clementine was on duty when we stopped by:
And you can get your first look at the cool poster for West Seattle Outdoor Summer Movies on the Wall (co-sponsored by WSB):
We also discovered a surprise to the south – Skillet IS here in West Seattle today after all, though their schedule and Twitter feed said they’d be at the Sounders game:
The folks at the trailer told us it’s a mix-up (as was finally tweeted – though we tweeted the discovery first) – they got here and then found out they were supposed to be at the game, but it’s too late to pack up and move, so they’re here for the usual duration (till about 2). Westside Dermatology (WSB sponsor) parking lot. Also at the Market, the 34th District Democrats are at the northeast entrance, registering voters (if you need to change your address, you can do that at their table too) – just a month till primary ballots go out (in the photo, added later, Jackie and Helen) –
And much more is happening, including the Square 1 Books (WSB sponsor) tent sale near the 34th DDs (alley entrance by KeyBank):
That’s proprietor Gretchen and son Jasper. Also sighted, the Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) Piecemakers selling raffle tickets for this quilt:
The Piecemakers meet Wednesdays at 1 pm; raffle proceeds will benefit Y kids’ programs and Fauntleroy Church – and you’ve got plenty of time to get a ticket, since the raffle’s not till November.
KITTEN, ANYONE? Noon-5 pm, it’s an adopt-a-thon at All the Best Pet Care on Alki.
E-CYCLING AT THE WELLNESS FAIR: Happening again today, 11 am-6 pm, Metropolitan Market. Find out here what’s free and what’s not.
WHAT’S FRESH AT THE FARMERS’ MARKET? We previewed today’s 10th anniversary “Berry Spectacular” here. And of course, there’s the regular yummy goodness at the 10 am-2 pm market – here’s this week’s Ripe ‘n’ Ready rundown – and don’t forget the Square 1 Books (WSB sponsor) “no-tax” tent sale at the WSFM.
BUCKETS OF BERRIES FOR SALE: Also noted last night – 11 am-1 pm, the Rotary Club of West Seattle has about two dozen buckets of strawberries left to sell, south parking lot of Admiral Safeway.
WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET, 10TH ANNIVERSARY: This is tomorrow’s marquee event on the peninsula — “Berry Spectacular” is the theme for the celebration during the Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm at 44th/SW Alaska, marking its first decade in operation. Free berry mini-sundaes (including Husky Deli ice cream) are promised, along with other special additions including a “no-tax” tent sale (at the market site) by Square 1 Books (WSB sponsor), live music with Mozo, and free recipe booklets.
BONUS ROUND FOR ROTARY CLUB STRAWBERRY SALE: One more place to shop for berries tomorrow — Rotary Club of West Seattle past president Gary Potter sent this news of an added third day of strawberry sales:
The Rotary strawberries are usually all gone by 5:00 pm Saturday, but we have about 25 buckets left and are going to be open for business Sunday from 11 am to 1 pm in the Admiral Safeway back parking lot. There are approx. a dozen each of 7.5 lb buckets for $25.00 and 15 lb buckets for $38.00.
They’re also taking orders for the next two rounds of berry sales – blueberries and raspberries – more info here.
Strawberries and cherries should be available today, according to the latest fresh sheet from the West Seattle Farmers’ Market (10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska). See it here.
Thanks to Gregory Wright for photos from Saturday’s low tide – and this morning, it’ll be even lower (bottoming out at 11:24 am, according to this tide chart) – with volunteer beach naturalists out again at Lincoln Park and south of Alki Point, 10 am-1:30 pm:
Also today: Extra fun at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market (10 am-2 pm in The Junction) – it’s “Live Local Day” with free draft-mule-wagon rides, free sweet-pea flower starts for kids from Langley Fine Gardens, and free cooking demos (barbecue sauces!) – plus, here’s today’s fresh sheet. Last but not least, day 2 of Colman Pool‘s first “pre-season weekend” on the Lincoln Park shoreline, schedule here. More in the West Seattle Weekend Lineup – and if you’re garage-saling, check the listings in the WSB Forums’ Freebies-Deals-Sales section (free to post YOUR future sale!).
Among today’s highlights:
We got that video at a cheering station along Alki Ave during last year’s Walk with Us to Cure Lupus 5K — today, another sunny day for the fundraising walk, which starts from the Alki Bathhouse at 10, after check-in at 9 (more info here).
Also at 10, Furry Faces Foundation‘s plant sale/pet adoption event starts its second day at 3809 46th SW (map), continuing till 4 pm. Even more pets today, dogs and cats, and as of our visit around 2 pm yesterday, Riley (shown above with the Animals First Foundation folks) hadn’t found her permanent home yet. As for the plants? Vegetable starts and flowers, sun and shade, and if you’ve got questions, some great folks are there to help – like F3 leader Teri Ensley‘s mom Lila:
Gardeners who also enjoy beer and art have an event tailor-made for them at West Seattle Nursery – joining forces with Prost and Twilight for its first “Beer Fest” 1-5 pm, combining beer, gardening and art. Pretzels too, according to the WSN website. Part of today’s sales go to West Seattle Helpline in honor of the occasion.
Also today: In The Junction, as always, 10 am-2 pm is West Seattle Farmers’ Market time – here’s the link to today’s list of what’s fresh.
One more event of note: Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrating its new Pastoral Center with an Open House, all welcome, 9:30 am-1 pm (more info here; the new center’s on 35th just north of Myrtle – here’s a map).
First – looks like the weather will be nice for much of the day.
West Seattle Farmers’ Market? Here’s the fresh sheet; there also are a few special features today – a cooking demonstration featuring mushrooms, courtesy of Foraged and Found, plus soon-to-open Fresh Bistro mentioned via Twitter that they’re offering samples of “market fresh asparagus and lemon thyme soup.” (Asparagus photo at left by Christopher Boffoli)
Third – brunch! And beyond. We published a few notes last Thursday, “from Skillet to Skylark” — including an 11 am early opening today for WSB sponsor Cafe Revo. Also turns out that Skylark Club and Cafe (WSB sponsor) not only has the benefit brunch going on today, 9-3, but also karaoke starting at 7 – with an “auction” – bid on getting a participant to sing a certain song, and then they either can sing “your” song or bid higher and sing “whatever they want”!
Meantime, back to brunch, we also happened onto Circa talking Mom’s Day on FB and invited them to send a note for here – Nicole e-mailed us, “We’re usually not too busy on Mother’s Day, so come on down for a fresh, delicious brunch that won’t break the bank. Remember, though, parties larger than four can be in for a bit of a wait.” And Easy Street Records’ Cafe sent word of a Mother’s Day deal — read about it here.
And a non-food Mother’s Day note: Avalon Glassworks is offering a chance to “design your own float” today – read more about that here.
