RESTAURANTS FOR SALE: Three West Seattle listings on CL right now and one found elsewhere. For the CL listings, no names are mentioned although there’s really only one option for this one offering an Alki Mexican restaurant; also on Alki, here’s a restaurant/bar with “large outdoor patio”; and, with the same contact as that ad, a “bistro” somewhere in West Seattle. The fourth listing is Olarn Thai on California Ave between Alaska and Morgan Junctions (across from West Seattle Nursery).

Orcas off Fauntleroy, spotted by JumboJim:
Wanted to report that we saw approx. 10-12 orcas off of Lincoln Park and Fauntleroy dock around 10:00-10:30 this A.M. There was at least one male (tall dorsal fin) in the group, maybe two. They were passing to the south. A first time sighting for us from our house. Considering we’re one mile from the water, near the crest of the hill, we were pretty amazed to see them. We had been looking for birds with our spotting scope when we spotted them. I checked an orca hotline and it seems they may have been K pod.”
Smaller marine mammals off Harbor Ave, reported by Paul Cozens:
Around 20 California Sea Lions have been cavorting in the waters between Salty’s and Jack Block Park. There does not appear to be a skinny one in the bunch, indicating they are successfully feeding on something. A Harbor Seal was spotted lounging on the beach this morning, also.

No midwinter hibernation going on in The Junction — the West Seattle Farmers’ Market (tulips from last Sunday @ left) and West Seattle Art Walk are both going strong. Next Farmers’ Market is this Sunday, with the later start now in effect through February (11 am-2 pm); next Art Walk is Thursday (6-10 pm) — click here for the list of participating locations and artists, just sent by Lora from WSB sponsor Hotwire Coffee (note this will be the second WS Art Walk for the new Twilight Art Collective location in the ex-Bikes & Brew space west of Easy Street). Meantime, for a list of more events coming up even sooner, our weekly West Seattle Weekend Lineup will be published here in a few hours.
It was in the “fresh sheet” we posted last night but we didn’t believe it till we saw it with our own eyes … winter tulips. The grower, from Alm Hill Gardens in Whatcom County, says he’ll be there next week too. Also, since there’s a relatively cozy group of vendors at this point in the winter, the southern edge of the lot is open to parking:
Remember, NEXT week the Farmers’ Market moves to 11 am-2 pm Sunday hours through February.
-Blustery out there now, but the forecast for New Year’s Eve and Day looks great (though cold); the Polar Bear Swim at Alki will be interesting!
-Speaking of wind — ever been on a kayak in choppy seas? Found this video clip shot off Alki Point yesterday, featuring swells resembling the open ocean.
-Back to the matter of New Year’s — we’ve added more businesses’ holiday hours to the WSB Holidays page (and more to come). Perhaps most notably, in case you were wondering, both state liquor stores on California (Morgan and Alaska Junctions) are open till 7 pm New Year’s Eve.

Before you go (10 am-2 pm today): the citywide Farmers’ Market organization has beefed up its website, including a weekly list of what’s new at WS and other sites.
By the time we got home from the Farmers’ Market last Sunday, it was too late to mention this in time for anyone to act on it. But now with 12 hours to go till the market opens, it’s worth mentioning — SPECTACULAR STRAWBERRIES. At least three booths offered them last Sunday, some as low as $3/pint, ripe Skagit County strawberries, nothing like the plasticky supermarket ones from California. Yum! (Also for strawberry fans, as linked in our weekend roundup, Metro Market sells strawberry shortcake for $3, noon-5 pm tomorrow.)
