3 stops along the West Seattle Art Walk, June edition

6:08 PM: By this time tomorrow we might see rain – so get out now and enjoy the sun – this month’s West Seattle Art Walk is on!

(WSB photos by Torin Record-Sand)

Leonardo Lanzolla is one of the artists you can meet tonight. He’s at Fogue Gallery (4130 California SW) until 8 pm with his exhibition “All Creatures Great and Small.”

We’re stopping at a few other venues, so we’ll add more photos later. You can map your own West Seattle Art Walk route, with stops for art as well as for various establishments’ food/drink specials, by checking the official list/preview here!

6:56 PM: Julia Douthwaite Viglione is at West Seattle Grounds (2141 California SW) until 8 pm:

She’s showing her quilts, which are on display all month long, plus having an 8 pm drawing for a free quilt and offering this game:

Participants will find a long table marked with blue tape outlining a 5×3 grid and a pile of 10” sewn quilt squares in various textures and colors and patterns. People will lay out the squares in their own designs, take a photo; voilà – an e-quilt! Then you’ll join the drawing for a real quilt on the same design, in the “WIN YOUR QUILT” drawing. (The winner will receive the very quilt they’ve designed, in 6-8 weeks.) A creative, fun time guaranteed.

And one more stop – Mystery Made (4312 SW Oregon) in The Junction:

John Keatley is showing some of his renowned photography, also until 8 pm.

Three nights until the next West Seattle Art Walk, which happens on second Thursdays every month, all year long. Art Walk organizers say more venues are hosting in-person artist receptions this time, so you have more places to explore. Those include Zelda Zonk in Admiral and Flying Apron in The Junction, both of which spotlighted “during business hours” displays during the pandemic but are now returning to welcoming visitors during Art Walk hours. Plus, Art Walk coordinator Reeve Washburn says, “We have an Art Walk ‘first’: Warren Pope, local 3-D artist, is doing an artist open house in the Fauntleroy neighborhood.” Along with visiting venues showing art, you can also stop by restaurants and bars supporting the Art Walk with food and drink specials – they’re listed in Thursday’s official preview , too! The Art Walk officially starts at 5 pm Thursday but as you’ll see in the preview, some events start earlier, some later. Wide variety of art, too – from painting to photography to quilting.

That’s the first West Seattle Art Walk map in a while, now that in-person artist receptions are starting to make a comeback! It’s a beautiful night for the peninsula’s second-Thursday Art Walk, and you still have time to get out and do some art viewing. Here’s this month’s preview – not just showing who’s having an event tonight, but also venues where you can see the featured artists’ work all month. And in some cases, both:

Naomi Amber Dawn is this month’s featured artist at Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor). Her collection (read about it here) debuted at the shop tonight. They’ve closed for the evening now, but drop by tomorrow, or the day after, or any time in April.

Some other receptions continue all the way until 8 tonight – like Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor), showing the work of Jenna Roby (above) and pouring wine in its first Art Walk opening since last year. Or head to the southernmost Art Walk stop, Brace Point Pottery (4208 SW 100th), where Warren Pope‘s sculpture is featured. In the north, 16-year-old artist Austin Picinich is painting live at West Seattle Grounds (2141 California SW). Check the preview for other venues – as well as those offering food/drink specials, a longtime Art Walk feature making a comeback.

Seen on the West Seattle Art Walk, March edition

Emily Juarez is one of the artists you can meet during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk. She’s at West Seattle Runner (2743 California SW; WSB sponsor) until 7 pm – preview her work here. WSR is one of the newest participants in the Art Walk. You can visit several other businesses hosting artist receptions tonight – from North Admiral to Arbor Heights – or you can enjoy art online; the official Art Walk preview for this month explains how (and where, and when – as late as 9 pm for at least one venue)!

In our photo above, that’s Reeve Washburn, coordinator of the West Seattle Art Walk – and tonight, Reeve is also a featured artist at one of the indoor receptions. Meet her and see her paintings at CAPERS (4525 California SW) in The Junction until 7 pm, just a few doors south of another of tonight’s receptions:

Until 8 pm, photographer Doug Early is at Verity Credit Union (4505 California SW; WSB sponsor). But if you can’t, or don’t want to, get out to any of the (distanced and masked, of course) receptions, you can enjoy Art Walk other ways – see some of the featured work on this month’s lineup update, for starters. Seen on the West Seattle Art Walk, holiday edition

(WSB photo)

That’s Brittany Philbin, who’s at West Seattle Grounds in North Admiral (2141 California SW) as part of tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk. The photo she posed with is one you might remember seeing here on WSB back in October, when that pregnant Southern Resident orca – J46 Star – was part of a group that passed West Seattle. Brittany is a conservation advocate and health-care worker as well as a photographer; she’s at WSG tonight until 8 pm, one of several artists having indoor receptions this month. In The Junction, you can drop in on a few – among them, Erika Bell is at Verity Credit Union (4505 California SW; WSB sponsor) until 8 pm, and a group show is at Wild Rose’s (4529 California SW). Some businesses are just showing art during regular hours, but you can preview it all here – and for holiday shopping, remember that most artists are selling their work too.

All that glitters is … jewelry art! The annual Jewelry Invitational at Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor) is part of what’s in the spotlight during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk. Click! says the “Invitational features work from new artists Twyla Dill + Heather Kraft, new work from Jennifer Graves, and expanded collections from Ann Chikahisa and Adia Mei Jun Bobo.”

The shop is open until 7 tonight, but if you miss it, the jewelry will be featured all month and into December – some of it will be available for online shopping too. See this page on the WS Art Walk website for the rundown of every business participating this month, from North Admiral to Arbor Heights, and scroll through to enjoy the artists’ work even if you aren’t going to see it in person. That’s Natalie Millsap, featured artist at Verity Credit Union (4505 California; WSB sponsor), where you can meet her until 8 pm tonight as part of the West Seattle Art Walk. She’s a painter and printmaker from Bellingham, and Art Walk organizers note, “Her screen-printed clothing has a growing cult following around the U.S., leading to her brand name Cult of Nat.” The Art Walk update on other participating venues is here, from Admiral to Morgan Junction. Look for the sign:

As explained in the WSAW list, some art displays are up all month – so you can enjoy art even if you’re not able to get out tonight.

5:14 PM: Indoor, outdoor, online – including the video playlist above – you have multiple ways to enjoy tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk! Participating venues and artists are spotlighted on the WSAW website – times and locations vary. We’re headed out to check on a few in-person stops – coverage to come.

5:44 PM: Outdoor stop! Ginny Conrow at Brace Point Pottery:

BPP is the southernmost stop on the Art Walk, 42nd/100th in Arbor Heights.

6:07 PM: Verity Credit Union (4505 California; WSB sponsor) is open until 8 pm, featuring 19-year-old artist Saiyana Suzumura:

Saiyana is quoted on the Art Walk website: “One day after drawing one of my friends, I just began to draw all kinds of black women, and black people in general, amongst other ethnics who are not portrayed beautifully in this society, but I want to capture the beauty of black beauty and love in my art. Since drawing with my new found style I’ve explored other ways of communicating social awareness through my drawings and paintings. I want my art to empower my people.”

P.S. Verity is a hybrid indoor/outdoor stop tonight – while it’s indoors, the entire front of the branch is open-air (folding doors).

The August West Seattle Art Walk is happening now! Above is the YouTube playlist showing you artists and their work. You can also see highlights in this post on the Art Walk website – which also has the list of businesses you can visit to see art until 8 pm (including WSB sponsor Click! Design That Fits, 4540 California SW). Second Thursday, every month!

Scenes from July’s West Seattle Art Walk, including drive-by sights in Arbor Heights

5:59 PM: That’s artist Mimi Miles outside Brace Point Pottery in Arbor Heights, with an unusual West Seattle Art Walk sight until 8 pm:

Brace Point Pottery opens its patio and gallery for an outdoor, drive by, wander through sculpture exhibition. Mimi Miles‘ ceramic torsos and portraits are ceramic manifestations of human emotion and movement. Eight larger than life size busts of old white men make up “SENATE MAJORITY” and occupy center gallery, visible from the street. Female torso, “Attitude” conveys its message clearly.

BPP is at 4208 SW 100th. Other Art Walk locations – and online links – are in our preview from earlier today.

6:51 PM: A few sights from the Junction:

Painter Linda McClamrock is showing her work outdoors, at the KeyBank corner. And indoors at Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor), co-proprietor Frances Smersh (below with husband/co-proprietor John) is tonight’s featured artist:

Stop by The Junction before 8.

P.S. Not to get too morose … but if not for the pandemic, tonight’s the Art Walk that would have been combined with what we always called “Summer Fest Eve,” streets closed for setting up our area’s biggest annual festival. Here’s hoping for next year!

It’s the second Thursday of the month, which means West Seattle Art Walk night, online! Just launched and viewable above, a video playlist with what organizers explain as a “curated gallery “movie” with a good selection of work for the artists who are coordinated by local businesses, and a representative 1-3 images for all the artist-led exhibits (plus) a selection of personal videos sent in by some of the artists.” You can see all the artists’ work – and find out about them – by going here.

ART: Free online ‘coloring book’ offered by West Seattle Art Walk

That’s a page from the new printable online “coloring book” offered free by the West Seattle Art Walk. It’s by Dani Dodge, one of 19 artists who contributed to the brand-new “coloring book.” As we’ve seen – and shown – art has been therapeutic, even cathartic, in these pandemic times, so here’s a chance to express yourself – print one page or print them all. This post on the WSAW website explains how.

ALSO ONLINE TONIGHT: 46 artists featured in May’s West Seattle Art Walk

For a second month, the West Seattle Art Walk – a longtime second-Thursday tradition – is happening online tonight. Organizers have just published the lineup of participants, with this introduction:

Our virtual Art Walk was such a success last month, we had to do it again! Check out the full gallery of work [on the website] or click this link to view a curated virtual Art Walk on YouTube!

We again opened Art Walk to all artists who wanted to join, so have a blend of business-coordinated and artist-led exhibits. Marvel at the wide and deep variety of media, formats, subjects and moods of our 46 artists, an Art Walk Record!!

As for any second Thursday, all art is available for sale. If you would like to purchase something from an artist coordinated by a business, please contact the business first. If you would like to purchase something from an artist exhibiting on their own, please reach out directly to them with the contact information listed.

The Art Walk usually begins – when an in-person event – at 5 pm, so the YT playlist isn’t final until then, but you can follow that link to get a preview of some of the art starting now.
