West Seattle, Washington
29 Friday
Before we get to West Seattle Summer Fest this Friday-Saturday-Sunday, there’s one more Big Event – the next West Seattle Art Walk on Thursday night, “from Alki to Endolyne,” as the official postcard art proclaims – 43 venues (here’s the list/map). We mentioned one venue’s big plans last week. Today, two more highlights – First, as noted on the official Art Walk website, The Cask in Admiral plans its grand opening that night. (We brought you first word of this “Old World ale and wine house,” 2350 California SW, in this story last April.) (added 1:15 pm – we just dropped by The Cask and got these indoor/outdoor pix)
(back to original 11:02 am story) Second, for the venues in The Junction, the streets will already be closed for Summer Fest, and the theme is “Art Walk ‘Alive'” – with street performers (“buskers”) welcome to be part of it – Art Walk organizer Lora Lewis from Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) has even put out a citywide call. So if you know a busker, let them know they’re welcome to be in The Junction this Thursday night, 6-9 pm – as is everybody – we know the weather will be summery, the art will be awesome, so here’s another look at the map (again, not just The Junction, there are venues all over the peninsula) – as well as venue highlights on the WSAW site (many offer free refreshments too). See you there (and of course, at West Seattle Summer Fest the following three days).
One week from tonight, it’s the biggest West Seattle Art Walk of the year – the night before West Seattle Summer Fest, which means that when you visit the venues in The Junction, the streets already will be shut down for the three-day street festival. At right is Anné Burke of TILA Real Estate, which is presenting a $10,000 “West Seattle Minute to Win It” contest during Summer Fest, with a chance to practice on Art Walk night – the game includes balancing 3 golf balls (which Anné is demonstrating in the photo), “ping-tac-toe,” and bobble-head, plus, she says, “the final game of a dice roll to spell out T-I-L-A.” You can practice during West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm next Thursday (July 8th) at TILA offices, 4727 44th SW. P.S. The $10,000 prize competition is for 18+ only. (Watch the Art Walk website for more info soon on what else you’ll find – around the peninsula, not just in The Junction – next Thursday night.) P.S. Besides game practice, TILA has some other Art Walk highlights planned, including music, a magician, wine and chocolate, and 12 glass pieces donated by Avalon Glassworks, to be auctioned as a fundraiser for Northwest Hope and Healing.

The monthly West Seattle Art Walk is more than a night for admiring art. At Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in North Delridge last night, it was also an occasion for borrowing it, as the Art Lending Library opened for the night. It’s been a year since the ALL made its debut – in this June 2009 story, artist Seth Damm explained it on video, and last night he was busy explaining it to prospective borrowers:
The Art Walk is also often a night for music. At wine shop Bin 41 (WSB sponsor) in The Junction, along with watercolors by Lee Copeland, we found Red Dog:
They played Appalachian music, while the Bin 41 team poured wine from South Africa:
Also in The Junction, another WSB sponsor, Mural Apartments, also featured live music – here’s video of the Velveteen Lotharios:
(Video by Patrick Sand)
In keeping with the building’s name, Mural’s lobby is meant as gallery space – you can even see art through the windows as you walk by on 42nd SW. Heading back west through The Junction, at CAPERS, featured artist Jennifer Ament has chosen to help wildlife through her imagery of it:
CAPERS’ Lisa Myers explains that Jennifer “is donating 20% of her art sales to the National Wildlife Federation for sealife rescue in the Gulf [of Mexico] through June 24th. … She has just released a heron, nautilus, sea fan and whale as part of her growing collection of linoleum cut prints.”
Ahead – more photos, including two examples of last night’s Art Walk spotlight shining on food:Read More
Tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk is only half over – you’ve still got lots of time to go visit at least a few venues (here’s the printable map). At Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) in the Admiral District, for one, new paintings are in from featured artist Rachel Austin, like the one shown above – which, if you look very closely, actually incorporates an Alki Point map! It’s a cozy 5″ x 5″. There’s music, food and more, from Alki to Delridge to Fauntleroy and many points inbetween. Here’s our earlier preview; wsartwalk.com has even more highlights. We’ll have more photos to share later tonight.
That’s the new promotional video for the monthly West Seattle Art Walk – and tonight’s the June edition, 6-9 pm, dozens of venues all over our peninsula (here’s the printable map). Baked goods figure prominently in tonight’s plan – new Heavenly Pastry in the Admiral District makes its Art Walk debut, and Baked in Seattle marks its “grand opening” in part of the Blue Willow space in The Junction … Or if you want something to wash down the baked treats, Bin 41 wine shop (WSB sponsor) is having a wine tasting for those who stop in during Art Walk – live music too. And at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, the Art Lending Library is open tonight – a rare occasion! Check wsartwalk.com for Art Walk venue previews. Also tonight, the 1st official meeting of the new Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council, 7 pm at West Side Presbyterian Church (more here) … The city Parks Board will hear a briefing, with time for public comment, on the possibility that King County might seek to place a Combined Sewer Overflow-reduction facility at Lowman Beach Park – the briefing paper’s here; the meeting’s at 7 pm at Woodland Park Zoo, in the Activity Center near the west entrance … More, on the WSB West Seattle Events calendar page.
The Junction’s newest store, knows perfume (originally previewed here in February), opened its doors tonight for the first time – just in time for the May edition of the West Seattle Art Walk. That’s proprietor Christen Cottam, beaming in her brand-new space at 4536 California SW. Also seen along the Art Walk path tonight:
That scene was from about a block away at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor; 4306 SW Oregon): Jessica Dolens had a multimedia presentation in the corner – film on the back wall, art on the screen in the salon. Elsewhere in The Junction:
From left, at Twilight Artist Collective (4306 SW Alaska), that’s Eva Funderburgh, Justin Hillgrove, and Mike Capp – Eva created the art they’re standing next to.
Next West Seattle Art Walk is the second Thursday, as always – June 10th, 6-9 pm – watch wsartwalk.com for updates, as well as the WS Art Walk page on Facebook.
Second Thursday of the month is here already – West Seattle Art Walk night, all over the peninsula, from Alki Bathhouse in the north, to Fauntleroy’s Gail Ann Photography in the south, to ActivSpace on Harbor Avenue in the east, and beyond, with perfect weather expected. Here’s the map of all 41 venues – which include knows perfume, the Junction shop opening for the first time, plus the new Junction wine shop Bin 41, as well as WSB sponsors ArtsWest, Brunette Mix, Click! Design That Fits, Cupcake Royale, 8 Limbs Yoga, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, and Mural Apartments. You’ll also find photographer Wyn Bielaska, who took Mother’s Day shots at Hotwire last Sunday, exhibiting his work at Bakery Nouveau; treats at locations such as The Kenney (whose catering team will be on the job) and Blue Willow/Emma’s Cakes (wedding cake samples!). Scroll through the official Art Walk website, wsartwalk.com, for a sample of the artists whose work will be on display tonight – and sample the images on the West Seattle Art Walk Facebook page. 6-9 pm tonight – here’s that map again – see you out and about.
Every quarter, the West Seattle Art Walk‘s promotional materials take on a new look – for spring, the flyers and posters show the photo collage making up the WSAW’s name (as you can see at left). Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction is putting out the call for local artists to send in art to use on posters, flyers, etc., in future quarters. If you’re chosen, your work will be seen on more than 2,000 pieces of promotional material – not to mention myriad places online. Here’s the form with more details on what and who they’re looking for (By the way, the next WS Art Walk is May 13th; you can keep up with WSAW plans on the Web at wsartwalk.com and on Facebook by going here.)
The Body Bar on the north end of The Junction was the most sizzling venue during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk – because it was all about bacon. At right, with her muse, that’s artist KathyJ, who can be best appreciated through her website what do bacon do? – see it here. Next, Max Humphres was at Brunette Mix (WSB sponsor) with his mirror art:
And if you had wandered into Mural (WSB sponsor), you would have heard the sounds of guitarist/singer Rod Moody mingled with cheery conversation:
His performance was presented by Mural’s future sister building, Link, under construction in The Triangle. These were three of the 41 venues on tonight’s list; next West Seattle Art Walk is Thursday, May 13th.
WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: The spring lineup for the West Seattle Art Walk makes its debut tonight – more than 40 venues around West Seattle. In addition to what we mentioned in our Tuesday preview, you can mix art and wine, with photographers showing at both the newly opened Bin 41 and at West Seattle Cellars (tastings at both shops). There’s student art at The Kenney, hand-screened poster art at Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor), and a free photo for your Facebook profile if you visit Gail Ann Photography in Fauntleroy. The Art Walk runs 6-9 pm; venues are listed (with many more previews, including samples of the artists’ work!) at wsartwalk.com.
OPEN HOUSE AT M3 BODYWORKS: While you’re out for Art Walk, you can also stop by the Open House and meet the massage therapists of longtime WSB sponsor M3 Bodyworks. The M3 Open House also includes art, in keeping with the night’s theme – paintings by Desirae Hester. M3 is at 5410 California SW (upstairs), and welcomes you to stop by between 6-9 pm (open house details are here; also note, M3 has a coupon on the WSB Coupons page).
PARKS BOARD: The meeting’s downtown as usual, but we track the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners because there’s so much Seattle Parks property in West Seattle. Last meeting included a dire budget briefing (WSB coverage here), but there’s no formal budget update on tonight’s agenda – scheduled items include a briefing on park/open space acquisition and an update on encroachment on Parks land. 7 pm at Denny Park.
WEATHER NOTE: As mentioned last night, there’s an ongoing chance of some “wet snow” in showers tonight/tomorrow (Scott C, who commutes north, tells us he encountered some “leaving West Seattle” this morning). We’ll keep close watch on the forecast updates at midday, midafternoon and midevening.
Every quarter, there’s a new lineup for the West Seattle Art Walk – some venues come, a few go. And so now that it’s spring, there’s a brand-new roster: 41 venues in all, from Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) and Alki Bathhouse in the north, to Gail Ann Photography and Bird on a Wire Espresso in the south. (In addition to Click! other participating WSB sponsors include Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, Brunette Mix, Feedback Lounge and Mural Apartments.) You can visit any or all of the 41 stops this Thursday night, 6-9 pm. For details on the artists, check out the official Art Walk website – among the listings so far, “bacon people” at The Body Bar – and watch for highlights on the WSAW Facebook fan page.
Only got the chance to drop by one West Seattle Art Walk venue tonight, in part because we were driving around for quite a while trying to sort out the low-bridge woes (all over now). But The Junction’s own Twilight Artist Collective is always a sure bet on the big night (not to mention other times) – in our photo, artists Michelle Anderst and Chris Sheridan, two of the 10 artists whose work is in Twilight’s new show “10 and Change,” curated by Kate Protage (read more about it here). You can see the show at Twilight (Easy Street Records‘ western neighbor) through April 5th; next West Seattle Art Walk will be April 8.
WEST SEATTLE ART WALK, 6-9 TONIGHT: Among tonight’s dozens of options: Wallflower Custom Framing and Shooting Gallery (WSB sponsor) in The Junction features “Three Faces” by Jennifer Mercede (one of her paintings is at right), Elena Cronin, and Betsy LeVine. Kelly Rae Cunningham from Wallflower explains, “Elena, Jennifer and Betsy are three friends from Portland, Oregon, all in different stages of their art careers. Their styles vary, their colors vary, and their subjects vary. For this show, the three talented artists decide to focus on the figure.. in any way shape or form they feel inspired.” … Twilight Artist Collective has a reception for its new show 10 and Change (here’s last week’s announcement) … Tom Norton, West Seattle artist/musician/composer, paints and performs music live at The Bohemian 7-10 pm … At Shadowland, the Katie Voss Quintet plays at 8 tonight … More Art Walk previews at the official site, wsartwalk.com; get the walking map here.
SUNLIGHT, NIGHT TWO: In The Junction, you can catch the first hour and a half of the Art Walk and then move into the theater at ArtsWest (WSB sponsor) for “Sunlight,” which has the second performance of its four-week run tonight at 7:30.
FIRST LOOK AT FENTON GLEN: Tonight’s meeting of the Fauntleroy Watershed Council is scheduled to include a first look at restoration plans for Fenton Glen, next to Fauntleroy Park. Area residents interested in shaping the future of the park, Fauntleroy Creek, and/or Fauntleroy Cove are encouraged to attend. Agenda and past minutes at www.fauntleroy.net; the meeting’s at 7 pm, Fauntleroy Schoolhouse.
SPORTS NOTES: Chief Sealth High School‘s sports banquet is tonight, 6 pm … Basketball tryouts continue tonight for area 4th-8th graders at White Center’s Salvation Army Community Center (details here) … Baseball, T-ball and basketball signups start today at West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) – more here.
Just a quick reminder that we’re just a bit more than 24 hours away from the next edition of the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. Many of the venues – dozens around the peninsula – have information about their featured artist(s) on the official West Seattle Art Walk website; see it here, print out the walking map (here), then get ready to wander and enjoy, 6-9 pm tomorrow, from The Kenney in the south to Alki Bathhouse in the north. (We’ll also showcase some featured artists here tomorrow morning.)

Hungry?
Jessica Creager understands that a lot of people are these days — for jobs, for money, or for food.
Her show “Craving,” featured during Thursday night’s West Seattle Art Walk and continuing on display at Wallflower Custom Framing (WSB sponsor), 4735 42nd Ave SW, is a response to that reality: her paintings are focused on the “little things in life that cause her to spontaneously smile,” like a pink-frosted cupcake or a pair of Swedish Fish. Some of the paintings themselves are tiny, too, and that’s intentional, to make them more affordable to people who are feeling an economic pinch.
In fact, Creager is one of those people, but she’s not a starving artist. Instead, she’s an artist who’s looking for a job in law.
Thanks to Lora from Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) for that photo of one of the signs up for something that’s new this West Seattle Art Walk night – a shuttle between The Junction and four “southern” Art Walk venues, including shuttle sponsor Sterling Images Gallery (at Lowman Beach). Look for the pink signs. Info on spotlighted artists, plus two versions of the map – clickable Google, and printable PDF – all available at wsartwalk.com. ADDED 6:47 PM: From The Kenney – the Holy Rosary students having a bake sale to raise money for Haiti relief:
Here’s our preview about their fundraiser, as published this morning.
From left, that’s Grace Peer, Siena Jeakle, Sophie Baker and Colleen Donahue. Steve Peer shared the photo and explains they’re Holy Rosary 7th graders who’ve been going door to door seeking donated baked goods and distributing flyers for tomorrow night’s bake sale at The Kenney during the West Seattle Art Walk. Proceeds will go to Haiti quake relief. And there’s still time for you to help – you can bake something tomorrow (or, for our fellow night owls, tonight!) and drop it off at The Kenney (7125 Fauntleroy Way; map) right up until sale time (6-9 pm Thursday). This, by the way, fits in perfectly with something new that’ll be offered during tomorrow night’s Art Walk to get more people to The Kenney and other southern stops – Ron Sterling of Sterling Images Gallery, one such stop, at Lowman Beach, has rustled up a shuttle between The Junction and his side of town – read the full details about where and how to catch it, in this WSB Forums post.
Every second Thursday, year-round, 6-9 pm, you can wander West Seattle, enjoying (and if you choose, often, buying) the work of great local artists, during the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. This Thursday is the big night for February, and Lora Lewis from Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) tells us artist highlights are now up at wsartwalk.com – plus you can see, and print, the walking map (get it here). Something new this time around – Sterling Images Gallery is offering a shuttle from The Junction to “Art Walk South” stops, including their gallery at Lowman Beach, The Kenney, West Seattle Cellars, and Gail Ann Photography.
You’ve still got half an hour to get out and see the sights. Like that Barbie cake at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) in The Junction, to celebrate the Barbie photos in Wyn Bielaska‘s exhibition. And at Cafe Osita in Sunrise Heights, Alyssa is one of the West Seattle High School Photo Club photographers showing work:
Adding a bit more shortly. Venues are listed at wsartwalk.com. ADDED 8:53 PM: Another highlight tonight – Twilight Artist Collective is celebrating its fifth anniversary. It started in Pike Place Market, but West Seattle is home base now. Twilight’s Mary, Cheryl and Erin talked with WSB co-publisher Patrick:
ADDED 10:22 PM: One more photo – from Ken Paige‘s opening at Windermere in The Junction – courtesy of Eric Shalit from Box Turtle Design
If you’re in High Point, there’s still time to get to the HP Neighborhood Association meeting – they’ve started with informal dinner, but the business meeting won’t start till 6:20-6:30, scheduled to continue till about 8 (even if you can’t get here till after 7, that’s when they’ll be surveying attendees about healthy food options in the area and what would interest them). HPNA is meeting in the new High Point Neighborhood Center where SW Morgan becomes Sylvan Way. That’s one of the events we’re covering tonight; we’re also dropping by a few stops on the West Seattle Art Walk, which started at 6 and continues till 9. Got late word of a student exhibition as part of it – JH says the West Seattle High School Photo Club is showing at Cafe Osita, the coffee shop on 35th SW just north of Webster. The walking map for this quarter’s Art Walk participants is the second page of this PDF file. WSB sponsors on the Art Walk: Click! Design That Fits in Admiral, Skylark Cafe and Club in North Delridge, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, Mural and Wallflower Custom Framing in The Junction, Feedback Lounge in Morgan Junction, and Sold Home Decor in Westwood.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: That’s the Barbie-inspired art of Wyn Bielaska, the Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) featured artist during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk, 6-9 pm at dozens of venues all over WS (see the list, and learn about the artists, here). Other events happening during the Art Walk – C and P Coffee‘s Wine Club, and M3 Bodyworks (WSB sponsor; 5410 California SW) is having a Holiday Open House featuring photographer Wayne Burger‘s underwater work. (added 2;04 pm – more info on this:)
M3 Bodyworks’ holiday opening will be catered by Chef Kate Thomson of Seasonal Palate (www.seasonalpalate.com) with island themed food and specialty drink. M3 will also be giving away door prizes tonight including a 90 Minute Package of 5 massages. More can be found at www.m3bodyworks.com/events.html
HEALTHY HIGH POINT: Healthier living – including your chance to take a survey about food – is the focus of tonight’s High Point Neighborhood Association quarterly meeting, 6 pm, High Point Neighborhood Center. The featured speaker is Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association executive director Derek Birnie.
THINKING ABOUT REMODELING – OR BUILDING FROM SCRATCH: Tonight is another one of the free workshops presented by longtime WSB sponsor Ventana Construction. Free! It’s not too late to RSVP – 206-932-3009 – 6 pm, 5458 California SW.
See what else is up today/tonight (and beyond) by checking the WSB West Seattle Events calendar.
The forecast looks a tiny bit better for tomorrow night, when more than three dozen local businesses and venues welcome you to stop by between 6 and 9 pm for the next monthly West Seattle Art Walk. You can start plotting your course now by going to the official Art Walk website — which has previews of some of the artists you’ll see, all over the peninsula. The business lineup changes every quarter – some come, some go – the lineup for January through March, more than three dozen strong, includes seven WSB sponsors that are literally all over the (West Seattle) map: Click! Design That Fits in Admiral, Skylark Cafe and Club in North Delridge, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse, Mural and Wallflower Custom Framing in The Junction, Feedback Lounge in Morgan Junction, and Sold Home Decor in Westwood. You’ll also find participants that are hot spots for art any time of the month, including Twilight Artist Collective in The Junction, celebrating its fifth anniversary. Keep an eye on the Art Walk site for more previews, and we’ll bring you the walking map (printable!) as soon as we get it – 6 to 9 tomorrow night, all over West Seattle.
At Twilight Artist Collective, proprietors Mary, Erin and Allison celebrated “ugly sweater night” along with West Seattle Art Walk night. That’s one of 10 photos we’re sharing on a night that also saw the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce celebrate the season – read on for the quick tour:Read More
