Drainage dilemma delays Delridge Skatepark construction

When you visit Delridge Community Center for the ReFRESH Southwest festival this Saturday (1-5 pm, another update later today), you might wonder what’s up with Delridge Skatepark construction on the northeast corner of the DCC grounds. Though fall completion was the hope just a few months ago, that won’t happen – project manager Kelly Davidson tells WSB that skatepark construction is now expected to start in late summer, which would mean completion early next year. She says issues with groundwater and drainage at the skatepark site have meant it’s taking longer to completing the documents needed to send the project out for bid, but they’re getting closer – she’s hoping a meeting with engineers tomorrow will settle the issue of how they’ll deal with drainage.

Pending approval by Seattle Public Utilities, Davidson says “over-excavating” is likely to be the solution — digging a bigger hole, and surrounding the project area with fill that drains better than the existing clay. (She says a project team member has described it as “surrounding it with a sponge.”) Otherwise, groundwater could back into the bowls during heavy rain, and that would be a safety risk. She says this won’t change the skatepark design (by West Seattle-based Grindline), and doesn’t expect the water work to put the project over-budget, as they have a “contingency” to deal with this kind of issue. “Everything else [regarding construction] is ready to go,” she says, while acknowledging they would have liked to have known more about the drainage/groundwater challenges sooner, but geotechnical engineers didn’t get involved until the project’s “additional funding” was available at the first of the year. Once construction begins, she says it’s likely to take around 80 working days – based on a five-day workweek, that would be four months – meaning the skatepark isn’t likely to be open before next year. (If you’re looking for Parks info about this online – Davidson says the project webpage should be updated sometime later today.)

Last year at West Seattle Summer Fest, the then-new (Heart) Delridge T-shirts were a hit – at the information booth, we fielded multiple queries on where people could find the North Delridge Neighborhood Council‘s table so they could buy one. Just got word from Holli Margell of NDNC (who’s modeling the shirt in the 2009 photo at right) that they’re selling them at this Saturday’s Delridge Day/Sustainable West Seattle/ReFRESH Southwest Festival – but you need to preorder, so that yours will be waiting for you at the NDNC booth:

We have a new batch of Heart Delridge T-shirts ready to sell to raise money for the North Delridge Neighborhood Council. Sized from kids 2T to XXL, they cost $15. You can reserve one of them by e-mailing heartdelridgetee@gmail.com with your name and desired size and it will be waiting for you at the booth.

The festival is 1-5 pm Saturday on the Delridge Community Center grounds; several big events will precede it in the morning, including community-cleanup activities and Delridge Walks – there’s still time to get a group together to walk to the festival, and potentially win a prize! You can sign up here. Meantime, there’s more festival info here, including activities/music highlights.

It’s an occasion that only comes around every few months: The Art Lending Library at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center has just announced its next opening:

The Art Lending Library will be open for one night. Come check it out! Thursday, June 10th. 6 pm to 9 pm.

Reminder: The Library is based on a first come first serve basis. The earlier you arrive the more choices you will have. Also, all artwork that is checked out will be delivered at a later date by the Librarians.

Haven’t heard of the Art Lending Library before? It’s explained here; the concept first debuted two years ago during Delridge Day (which is coming up a week from today as part of the ReFRESH Southwest festival; the Art Lending Library opening isn’t till five days after that, though).

This Wednesday, the regular meeting of the Delridge Neighborhoods District Council will be preceded by a special hourlong discussion – and if you’re interested in the greater Delridge area – basically, West Seattle from 35th SW eastward – you’re invited. Just be at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center at 6 pm Wednesday (5/19). DNDC member Pete Spalding of Pigeon Point explains what it’s all about:

Not long ago, some of the past, present and future leaders of Delridge got together to discuss the past, present and future of Delridge. We talked about what we liked, what we wanted, where we wanted to be, and how we wanted to get there.

Now we want to talk to you.

The Delridge Neighborhood District Council is pleased to announce Strategic Delridge, a series of hour long meetings of the minds of this diverse community. Our goal is to take what we believe to be the next step – to organize and empower the leadership* of our Delridge Neighborhoods.

Our goals and vision are listed on the attached agenda. Come and join us. This meeting will take place during the dinner hour for some, please feel free to bring something to eat.

North Delridge Neighborhood Council: ReFRESH Southwest; more

As just forwarded by Delridge’s Neighborhood District Coordinator Ron Angeles, that’s the official poster for ReFRESH Southwest, the umbrella name for the combined Delridge Day/Sustainable West Seattle Festival event set for June 5 at Delridge Community Center. It was an agenda item for the North Delridge Neighborhood Council‘s monthly meeting last night; Angeles asked the group for ideas on where to focus cleanup efforts for the Clean and Green event that’s also part of the day. Suggestions included spots where blackberry and ivy vines have overgrown sidewalks, particularly in front of vacant homes; Angeles plans to scout locations with fellow city employee Ron Harris-White. One other NDNC update: Nancy Folsom said the group’s ongoing Adopt-A-Street efforts will soon be recognized with a street sign, location TBA.

North Delridge Neighborhood Council meets the 2nd Tuesday of the month, Youngstown Arts Center, 6:30 pm.

It’s been more than a year since the first story we brought you about the Delridge Produce Cooperative – then, several months later, came the Mobile Market experiment – and now, DPC is planting the seeds for Year 2 of their work to help bring more fresh fruit and vegetables to Delridge. The latest step toward their goal: Borscht and Bagels, a lunch gathering/strategy session this afternoon at Southwest Youth and Family Services.

That’s DPC’s Ranette Iding, leading a presentation when we dropped by, midway through the event. Want to pitch in? DPC is on the web and on Facebook.

Updates for tonight – weather, Art Walk, Sanislo Science Fair …

That photo shared on Facebook by Lee shows what kind of day it’s been – more than a little sunshine, but also some brief bursts from banks of dark clouds – we were in White Center around lunchtime when sleet started to fall; about the same time, Christopher e-mailed from The Junction that a flurry was under way. The forecast still says there’s a chance of snow in “heavier showers” later tonight and/or tomorrow, so while it looks great now, take a jacket. And take the walking map for the West Seattle Art Walk – it’s the second page of this 2-page PDF. We’ve also gotten details on one last feature to mention – at Mural Apartments (WSB sponsor), their future sister building Link Apartments (under construction in The Triangle) is sponsoring a performance by West Seattle guitarist Rod Moody during Art Walk, 6-9 pm. Plus, we’ve gotten a note that Sanislo Elementary has its Science Fair tonight, everybody welcome – 6-8 pm (map).

Followup: Another Delridge “problem property” torn down

Just a few days after the one-year anniversary of the Delridge “problem properties” tour, featuring two city councilmembers, two city department heads, it’s demolition day for another of the rundown houses mapped by then-North Delridge Neighborhood Council chair Mike Dady. He had shared the news four weeks ago that the demolition permit had been granted for 4801 23rd SW (map) – a house he had said during the tour was boarded up only because he’d done it himself. Another of the properties on the April 2009 tour, 4117 Delridge, was demolished less than two months later. Two measures addressing some of the problems highlighted in the tour have become law – the chronic-nuisance-properties ordinance and the “derelict housing” ordinance, both finalized last December.

Update: 23rd SW reopens on schedule; traffic/parking changes end

Thanks to Jim Sander from the Pigeon Point Neighborhood Council and Mike Dady from the North Delridge Neighborhood Council for the word that 23rd SW reopened today, as promised, after six weeks of work adding utility connections to new homes up the hill from Delridge. (We took the photo at left a short time ago.) Jim reported in e-mail to PPNC members that the much-discussed no-parking signs along 21st SW were being picked up, too. Mike, on behalf of the NDNC Transportation Committee, wants to remind drivers that this means the end of other temporary traffic changes: In particular, it means the return of the temporarily covered “No Left Turn” and “No Right Turn” signs at the corner of 22nd and 23rd Avenues SW, which he says were hard-won after a years-long campaign – those turns are again illegal. And Metro Route 125 is supposed to be back on its regular route this afternoon, according to spokesperson Linda Thielke.

Shining stairs: North Delridge light request finally fulfilled

That Seattle City Light crew was a welcome, and long-awaited, sight in North Delridge today. In addition to sharing that photo, Betsy explains why:

One year ago, we submitted our first report to Seattle City Light asking them to fix the light on the stairwell from High Point down to 26th ave SW. This is a major thoroughfare, with folks walking down from High Point through to the bus at Delridge Way and to the High School. At least twice, a young woman stopped at our house after midnight, too frightened to walk up the stairs to her mom’s house. With dark falling at 4:30 in the afternoon in winter, many young folks heading home from school faced a very long steep slog in pitch darkness.

After one year of complaining and multiple reports lodged, today the nice folks at City Light came out and installed the first of two light poles. We’re somewhat mystified why they installed one of the poles at the bottom of the walkway at the street, when there’s already a streetlight on that exact corner. But we’re grateful for a new streetlight. The other pole is due to be installed soon to light up the rest of the street. These photos may be boring, but we are excited to light up the staircase safely!

Betsy,

New at North Delridge’s Nucor plant: Stars and Stripes in steel

Maybe you’ve noticed this while driving The Bridge back to West Seattle? Scott C tipped us to it the other day – and now, we have a photo from West Seattle Nucor plant engineer Craig Anderson, showing what he explains is “the new 10′ x 20′ American Flag we installed on the East End of our bag house that is visible from the westbound lanes of the West Seattle Bridge. The flag is one way we support our troops with American Pride. The flag was designed and fabricated out of 100% recycled steel by Nucor and is illuminated at night so it is visible for all to enjoy.”

Video: Car hits parked car, flips on Delridge

That’s a tow truck finishing the two-step process of pulling a flipped car back to the upright position, about an hour after that car overturned on Delridge at Willow (map) around 1:10 am. The second car you see in the video was parked when the black car hit it, police told us at the scene. They say someone from the flipped car was taken to the hospital, though we don’t know how badly they’re hurt. The crash happened in the northbound lanes at a wide spot in the road, so Delridge wasn’t closed to traffic for long – cars were directed around the wreckage, using the center and southbound lanes.

New West Seattle co-op preschool: Meeting tomorrow

A meeting is planned tomorrow for the next step in organizing a new West Seattle cooperative preschool to open at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center beginning this fall. From organizer Benni Sack:

We have a preliminary commitment for space at Youngstown beginning in August, 2010, and now it is time to figure out who is interested in participating in this new coop!

Here is what the preliminary parameters might be for an endeavor like this:

– Your toddler will be at least 24 months by August, 2010, and no older than 4.5 years old by August 2010
– You are interested in volunteering in the coop on a regular basis (the volunteer positions and duration of them will be decided by the coop board)
– You are potentially interested in belonging to the coop board, which will need to meet online and in-person on a regular basis to bring together the particulars of the coop

Here are the meeting particulars:

Saturday, March 20th, 2010 @ 10:00 a.m.
Mosaic Community Coffeehouse – in the demitasse room (kids playroom), 4401 2nd Avenue Northeast (map)

They have coffee, tea, and pastries there which can be purchased by donation (it’s a community, not for profit coffeehouse). I will bring some extra treats as well. PLEASE BRING YOUR LITTLE! We can have a play date!

This will be an informal meet and greet to try to ascertain the level of interest and participation from the community. Please RSVP to blackbirdrosie1973@gmail.com. If you can’t make it but would still be interested in participating, please contact me by e-mail and let me know your level of interest. Board members are encouraged! We have a lot of fun stuff to get done this spring and summer to get ready!

She says the meeting’s being held at this particular coffeehouse because it has that kids’ playroom.

4 special cleanups: Delridge, Highland Park, Fauntleroy Way, 35th

This weekend and next, you have 4 special chances to help beautify and/or green up West Seattle neighborhoods. More details on the WSB Events calendar – but here’s the quick roundup – ALL could use extra hands, just show up!

SATURDAY, MARCH 20: It’s the Delridge Playfield playground sprucing-up event (maybe beyond if there’s a good turnout). 10 am-noon.

SUNDAY, MARCH 21: Highland Park Improvement Club plants trees, builds a new kiosk/sign, cleans tables/chairs/walls inside, and picks up neighborhood trash. 10 am-5 pm.

SATURDAY, MARCH 27: The city Clean ‘n’ Green event we mentioned previously is also a huge tree-planting event along Fauntleroy Way, with the West Seattle Rotary, local Scouts, and other neighbors/friends/community members. Starts at Fairmount Playground, 9 am-1 pm.

SUNDAY, MARCH 28: Sidewalks and planting strips along 35th SW between SW Holden and SW Roxbury get helping hands from the Westwood Neighborhood Council and Friends of the Southwest Library. Check in at the library. 10 am-1 pm.

Followup: No DMS traffic sign for Delridge; plus, bridge-cam update

Following our report on Saturday about the new Dynamic Messaging Signs that SDOT is putting up in West Seattle (and other areas of the city), commenter Aim wondered why one wasn’t going up on Delridge. We checked with SDOT to see if one was in the works for Delridge further down the line. Short answer: No – Fauntleroy, Admiral and 35th are the three where you’ll get information before you get to The Bridge. We asked SDOT why Delridge isn’t getting one. Not enough money – they had to prioritize, according to SDOT’s Marybeth Turner, and of the four main roads that carry traffic onto The Bridge, Delridge has the lowest volume. So, she says, “While Delridge would benefit from a DMS, it is not funded at this time.” Adiam Emery from SDOT’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) team says, “For the lower level roadways, we will keep all the flashing beacons that inform drivers when the swing bridge is open and operating.” Speaking of bridges, we also inquired with SDOT when the West Seattle Bridge traffic camera would be back in operation – the one that points westbound has been dead for months. Emery’s reply: “The new West Seattle Bridge camera is installed and ready to go, waiting for electrical service connection. We are coordinating with Seattle City Light to assist in any way possible to get power to the equipment. They hope to have power to the camera by the end of this month, if not before.” By the end of August, 136 traffic cameras will be in operation within the city limits, though Emery cautions they’re not all reflected on the travel-info page so far (web5.seattle.gov/travelers).

Next week: Crime Prevention, Delridge District, Alki councils

All three community councils meeting this week have announced their agenda highlights:

TUESDAY – WEST SEATTLE CRIME PREVENTION COUNCIL: This meeting’s scheduled guest is Benjamin Kinlow, Crime Prevention Coordinator for the Southwest Precinct, which means he also helps coordinate the Block Watch program. The newly formed West Seattle Blockwatch Captains’ Network – which you can join on Facebook – is urging members to be there. This meeting also routinely includes a crime-stats update from local police leadership, and time to discuss your neighborhood concerns. 7 pm Tuesday, Southwest Precinct (Delridge/Webster; map).

WEDNESDAY – DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOODS DISTRICT COUNCIL: Scheduled guests include City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw, Nathan Torgelson from Seattle Parks (to discuss the Camp Long Lodge renovations), and Mark Ufkes and Peggy Weiss from the pro-Seattle-annexation White Center Homeowners’ Association. DNDC members also will discuss their recent retreat, as they meet at 7 pm Wednesday, Youngstown Cultural Arts Center (4408 Delridge Way; map).

THURSDAY – ALKI COMMUNITY COUNCIL: West Seattle’s school board rep Steve Sundquist is a scheduled guest, along with Seattle Parks staff. ACC meets at 7 pm Thursday, 6115 SW Hinds (map); get the latest info at alkinews.com.

ONE MORE BIG MEETING NEXT WEEK: Monday night, 7 pm at Denny International Middle School, it’s the next in a series of meetings around the cities to talk about Mayor McGinn’s Youth and Families Initiative (explained here). Previous meetings in other neighborhoods have drawn hundreds of people. This initiative involves almost every issue you can imagine – safety, education, health, environment – so whatever you care most deeply about, be ready to advocate for it.

2 North Delridge notes: Future demolition; future restaurant

FIRST NOTE: That photo shows the boarded-up, ramshackle house at 4801 23rd SW (map), on the day that then-North Delridge Neighborhood Council leader Mike Dady led a tour of neighbors, media, and city officials, visiting several neglected-to-say-the-least properties, as a plea for help with the trouble such “problem properties” have caused. 11 months have passed since the tour (WSB coverage here); Mike just sent word that a demolition permit’s been issued for 4801 23rd SW (here’s the city infopage). At least one other property visited that day (4117 Delridge) has already been torn down.

SECOND NOTE: A banner’s up (no photo yet, sorry) on the new two-story building that went up adjacent to Olympia Pizza on Delridge (map). It promises Vietnamese soup and sandwiches, coming soon. Haven’t found any other info so far but will keep checking.

Delridge Skatepark gets thumbs-up from Design Commission

We’re at City Hall downtown, where the Seattle Design Commission has just reviewed the Delridge Skatepark project for the second time, and has given its final blessing to the skatepark’s design. “Good luck!” chair Mary Johnston said to Parks Department project manager Kelly Davidson, after the unanimous vote. Commissioners had just a few lingering concerns they recommend Davidson and the designers, West Seattle-based Grindline, address – in particular, to make sure there’s maximum functionality for an element between the skatepark and the nearby wading pool, considered as a barrier to keep little kids from bolting across the 25 feet and into the skate bowl – not just a wall. A few other tidbits: Davidson says there’s no final decision on whether to have gravel paths around the skatepark, but suspects that will be the final decision because of cost concerns (the commission remains concerned about the gravel getting “onto the skating surface” and is urging Parks to look at a “different pervious” material) … Davidson mentioned that the community-powered art project to accompany the skatepark has three muralists assigned to it, which one commissioner thought might not be optimal since the project has few planned elements suitable to that kind of painting. (The community group working on the art project is meeting tomorrow night, Davidson mentioned, to continue discussing details.) She also was urged to consider adding a bike rack, and also to keep in mind that it will be optimal if people waiting for buses along Delridge will be able to watch the skaters (provided there’s no blockage from trees, since none are to be removed as part of the project). The $750,000, 12,500-sf skatepark at the northeast corner of the Delridge Community Center park site is expected to break ground this summer and be done by fall.

First – after a little time in semi-limbo following the schedule change at Delridge Library, the North Delridge Neighborhood Council has now settled on a regular meeting time/place: Second Tuesday of the month, 6:30 pm, Youngstown Arts Center conference room next to the office. That means NDNC’s next meeting is one week from tonight. Then, a bit later this month:

(July 2009 photo by Hai Truong)
Remember the sea of people who pitched in to build the Delridge Community Center playground in a single day last July? Seven months have gone by, and volunteer power is needed again on March 20th to show it a little love. From NDNC co-secretary Holli Margell:

With our new playground, and unusually warm weather this year, the playground and surrounding park is getting littered with trash. With budget cuts, the Parks Department is unable to keep it picked up. The planting beds could use some sprucing up too, so if you have some gardening tools you can pull weeds too. Let’s work together and have fun! All ages are welcome.

We’ll provide some coffee and hot chocolate to warm you up. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Prizes will be awarded – the very last chance to own a (Heart) Delridge Tee Shirt!

The cleanup won’t take long – they’re planning for 10 am-noon on March 20th, which is two weeks from this Saturday. Can you help? E-mail Holli at holli.margell@gmail.com – or talk to her at next week’s NDNC meeting.
