Thanks for the tip. Menashe & Sons Jewelers in The Junction has announced via social media that it’s closed until November 9th because of a COVID-19 diagnosis. From the post:

Dear Menashe & Sons customers, friends, family,

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that one of our employees has tested positive for COVID-19. We immediately closed the store and have done a deep clean, and everyone is isolating.

Due to this, we will remain closed until Monday, November 9th so we can take extra precautions and our employees may get tested and self-quarantine at home.

Since this diagnosis, the building has been repeatedly sanitized and disinfected following state and federal guidelines.

We are working with the King County Department of Health to ensure that everything possible is being done to keep you and our employees and families safe.

The safety and wellbeing of our team, their families, and you, who we also consider family, are the utmost importance.

As we reported in July, businesses are not required to disclose COVID-19 cases, so announcements like this are entirely voluntary.

CORONAVIRUS: Wednesday 10/28 roundup

 |   Coronavirus | West Seattle news

Eight months ago tonight, King County announced its first COVID-19 case. Here’s where we are now:

NEWEST KING COUNTY NUMBERS: From the Public Health daily-summary dashboard, the cumulative totals:

*26,817 people have tested positive, 196 more than yesterday’s total

*803 people have died, 3 more than yesterday’s total

*2,561 people have been hospitalized, 2 more than yesterday’s total

*530,067 people have been tested, 3,243 more than yesterday’s total

One week ago, those totals were 25.554/787/2,516/514.434.

STATEWIDE NUMBERS: Find them, county by county, on the state Department of Health page,.

WORLDWIDE NUMBERS: See them, nation by nation, here.

STATEWIDE SITUATION REPORT: The state reports:

Today the Washington State Department of Health released the latest statewide situation report on COVID-19 transmission, which shows a general rise in the intensity of the epidemic in both western and eastern Washington.

Report findings include:

*Transmission is increasing in western and eastern Washington. The best estimates of the reproductive number (how many new people each COVID-19 patient will infect) were 1.34 in western Washington and 1.12 in eastern Washington as of October 10. The goal is a number well below one, which would mean COVID-19 transmission is declining.

*From mid-September to mid-October, case counts and hospitalizations have risen in both western and eastern Washington. Some of the increase in early October appears to be due to more testing. However, case counts increased during the week ending October 15 despite decreases in testing.

*Increases in western Washington are widely distributed geographically and across ages. Growth is particularly high in the 25 to 39 and 40 to 59 age groups and in the Puget Sound region (Snohomish, King and Pierce counties). This wide distribution suggests increases are due to broad community spread, not driven by a single type of activity or setting.

HOLIDAY TRADITION, PANDEMIC STYLE: West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) is handling its “Holiday Taste” differently this year – starting now

HALLOWEEN, PANDEMIC STYLE: Still adding more no-contact trick-or-treating (some happening Friday as well as Saturday) and decoration locations to our Halloween page. This display, incorporating the virus, may be the prize-winner so far (thanks to Lynda B for the photo):

Seattle Public Schools says no in-person learning for at least three more months

This won’t surprise you, but Seattle Public Schools says it felt the need to make an official announcement that remote learning will continue at least through the end of the current school year’s first semester. From Superintendent Denise Juneau:

We are close to the two-month mark for this school year and while we continue to adjust to this new way of remote learning, we’ve received many questions about when SPS students will be able to return for in-person classes in our buildings. Currently, we’ve prioritized only a small number of students who receive special education services for in-person instruction.

We appreciate and hear your concerns and questions. Seattle Public Schools will remain remote with limited in-person instruction through January 28, the first semester of school. This approach is in response to an increase of COVID-19 cases in King County and after consultation with Seattle Education Association, Seattle Council PTSA, and the Principals’ Association of Seattle Schools.

There is also no guarantee that we will be able to increase in-person instruction next semester. There are many factors that need to be considered, as we closely monitor King County COVID-19 transmission rates as well as disproportionate impacts on communities of color.

Next Steps
The week of October 12, a Re-Entry Leadership Team including the Superintendent, representatives from Seattle Education Association, Principals’ Association of Seattle Schools, Seattle Council PTSA, students, and the School Board reconvened to talk about next steps. This team will meet regularly to discuss in-person learning recommendations, including prioritized students, return criteria and benchmarks, model flexibility, and options for families who aren’t ready to return in-person this school year.

Transparency and making sure families and staff have opportunities for input will be crucial as the School Board makes challenging decisions.

A public work session on in-person learning will be held November 30, 4 – 5:30 p.m. The SPS community is invited to watch online via SPSTV on YouTube, or on television (Comcast channels 26 and 319, Wave channels 26 and 695, and Century Link channels 8008 and 8508).

We are hoping to provide some certainty in this uncertain time by making this announcement today and commit to keeping you informed and included as more decisions are made going forward. Opportunities to provide feedback directly to staff and the School Board will be shared in the next couple weeks.

In-person learning ended on March 11th; the district announced at the time that schools would close for at least 14 days. Across the country, some districts that reopened schools have closed them again, like Boston.

FOLLOWUP: Both Lincoln Park parking lots have reopened

Thanks again to tipster Mike – first, he reported the south Lincoln Park parking lot’s reopening back on Thursday; today, he sent the photo above with news that the north Lincoln Park lot is open again as well. (We had checked just yesterday afternoon, and at that time it was still closed.) As we noted on Thursday, while tomorrow is the official reopening date for lots like these (as we first reported two weeks ago), Parks crews have actually been reopening them over the past week, since the work that’s involved – like removing those big blocks from the south LP lot – couldn’t all be done in one day. The lots and others at “destination parks” citywide were closed seven months ago as “an effort to encourage social distancing and reduce the number of congregating crowds”; then in May, the south lot opened some accessible spaces for disabled park visitors.
