BIZNOTE: Ex-Be’s Restaurant reopening as Bonjour Vietnam

After a year-long closure, what was Be’s Restaurant at 4509 California SW in The Junction will reopen next week with a new name, Bonjour Vietnam. New furnishings, too.

Same ownership – Jade Nguyen, daughter of Be’s longtime owners, who (mostly) retired during the early pandemic shutdowns, after 35 years,

Jade has run The Alley speakeasy-style bar behind Be’s since 2018. She is almost done remodeling the restaurant, with plans for a soft open starting around 5 pm on Summer Fest Eve (next Thursday, July 14th). We talked with her there this evening. Changes include a higher ceiling and new lighting, plus front windows that open.

As for the food, she says the menu is still being finalized but as the new name implies, it’ll have both French and Vietnamese flavors – from escargot and paté to pho, banh mi, and vermicelli bowls. She says making a change just made sense, as trying to replicate Be’s offerings with a different chef after her parents’ retirement just wasn’t working. Another change: The restaurant space now includes a bar.

NEW WEST SEATTLE BAR: The Alley to open in the back of Be’s Restaurant

Soon to join the West Seattle bar scene: The Alley.

Jade Nguyen explains that her parents – who have operated Be’s Restaurant in The Junction for more than 30 years – wanted to open a bar.

The private room in the rear of the restaurant at 4509 California SW, which hadn’t undergone much updating over the years, seemed like the perfect space.

So it’s undergone a transformation in recent months – with Jade teaming with veteran local bar specialist Tony Larson to create a space with a “speakeasy” motif. We talked there with Jade and Tony earlier this week.

The lighting will be dim; the decor and cocktails will transport you back in time to the Prohibition-era. Even the bartenders/servers’ uniforms and chilled glassware will be intended to enhance the mood.

Tony says he is “huge on bars as a place for people to talk, to put your phone down.” The Alley will be that kind of place.

You’ll enter from the alley, one door down from California/Oregon. There might not even be signage. Probably just a light to let you know you’re in the right place. Most of the drinks will be familiar: “a decent-sized menu, about two dozen cocktails, you’ll recognize most of them.” Manhattans, for example. And Sazeracs. And some “new classics,” promises Tony, who will do some bartending in the early going too (you might know him from the launch team at Alchemy [WSB sponsor]).

Music? Jazz, says Jade, who has also been working on the decor – The Alley’s somewhat industrial-looking legacy windows will be covered by velvet drapes; a crystal chandelier catches your eye over the corner “lounge” area on one end of the bar. Other touches include an antique fireplace grate and some wall bricks that are newly installed but look like they’ve long been in place.

Food? Small bites. And before too long, you’ll be able to dine next door, as Jade says she expects to expand Be’s dinner offerings into later hours once the bar’s open – Vietnamese food, in particular (she’s working on a new menu for that).

Hours for The Alley will be 4 pm to midnight Sundays-Thursdays, 4 pm-2 am Fridays and Saturdays. Happy hour 4 pm-6 pm. They expect to be open by West Seattle Summer Fest Eve (July 12th).

BIZNOTES: Be’s Restaurant break; MOD Pizza update

Two quick biznotes about restaurants current and future:

BE’S: Thanks to the texter who sent a photo of the sign in the window of Be’s Restaurant (4509 California SW) in The Junction, saying they’re “on vacation” and expecting to reopen Monday (November 20th).

MOD PIZZA: Apparently the future pizza place at The Whittaker (4755 Fauntleroy Way SW; WSB sponsor) has moved up its timetable. When last we checked on their plans for opening, MOD said it had been delayed until next June. In a Twitter conversation this week, that changed to February.

Speaking of restaurants … our list of the ones that told us they’ll be open Thanksgiving is here (and linked in the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide, too) – any additions/changes, let us know, editor@westseattleblog.com – thanks!

West Seattle restaurants: Break ahead for Be’s

The Junction is where it’s all been happening today. We also received this from a texter – it’s up at Be’s Restaurant (4509 California SW). So if you’re looking for your waffle and/or pho fix (two faves that we’ve heard mentioned), get there before Tuesday.

WEST SEATTLE RESTAURANTS: 1 closing, 1 reopening

Two restaurant notes:

CHACO CANYON ORGANIC CAFE: The vegan restaurant at 3770 SW Alaska in The Triangle says it’s shutting down “until further notice” after Sunday. They’re inviting fans to come say goodbye before then; their announcement says, “We’re extremely proud of how many tasty recipes we tried and how many amazing customers we took care of; however, we are beyond sad that this chapter is over.” They’ll be open 10 am-5 pm daily through Saturday, 10 am-3 pm on Sunday.

BE’S RESTAURANT: The longtime Junction eatery (4509 California SW) has reopened, 8 am-2 pm daily, with a “limited menu that consists of breakfast food, burgers, and Vietnamese lunch options.” Plus: “Brunch cocktails from The Alley” (which is next door). Reservations are available by phone, 206-937-1110, or email, beskitchen1986@gmail.com.

West Seattle restaurants: Reborn Cassis reportedly Alki-bound

The citywide food community is abuzz today about the Seattle Times (WSB partner) report that a long-gone, much-missed French restaurant is making a comeback – not on Capitol Hill, where it was before, but here in West Seattle. In The Times’ “All You Can Eat” section, Rebekah Denn broke the news last night that the owner of Cassis, which closed in 2004, plans to bring it back at an unspecified Alki spot. Read her story here. We’ve tried to reach the restaurant-to-be’s proprietor for more information – so far, no response.

West Seattle Christmas 2008: Some restaurants that are open

This is not necessarily a comprehensive report but we’re just back from a trip to Hotwire, followed by an expedition up the rest of California to Admiral, then back down Admiral to Alki/Harbor, up Avalon, up Fauntleroy, back home. Here’s what we saw open, in case you are wondering about restaurants: Ho-Win Chinese Restaurant (California/Juneau; its menu is even online), Be’s Restaurant (Junction, California just south of Oregon), Pepperdock on Alki, Redline Music/Sports (35th just south of Avalon). Again, this is not necessarily comprehensive, but what we could tell from our driving tour. It’s been snowing/sleeting on and off for most of the hour and a half we’ve been out. Best moment: Hearing the Junction church bells at noon after leaving Hotwire. Roads: All the majors have at least one lane open each way, and those big medians of dirty snow. Only stretch we traveled that still had some slush in the main lane — Harbor Ave between the Duwamish Head turn and The Bridge. ADDED NOTES: We’re checking websites for any definitive sign of dinnertime open or closure, beyond what we observed. So far: Endolyne Joe’s in Fauntleroy, closed all day/night. JaK’s Grill, closed all day/night. Spring Hill (per phone recording), closed tonight. We also got a note via Facebook that Abbondanza is definitely closed tonight.

Starting tonight, The Alley (behind 4509 California SW) has four nights of live music to celebrate its third anniversary. If you haven’t already seen it in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, here’s the announcement:

The Alley is celebrating our three-year anniversary with live music from July 29th through August 1st. The four-night anniversary event will feature local Seattle favorites with a different musician or group who will play each night from 8 pm to 10 pm. We encourage everyone to have fun and come dressed up in 1920s to 1940s speakeasy attire and enjoy a fun night of live music and prohibition cocktails!

Dates – July 29 through August 1

Time – 8 pm to 10 pm each night

Lineup –
Thursday, July 29 – Emma Caroline Baker
Friday, July 30 – Kimball and The Fugitives
Saturday, July 31 – Patrick Rifflin
Sunday, August 1 – The Triangular Jazztet

As noted here when The Alley opened in 2018, proprietor Jade Nguyen (center in the photo above) is the daughter of the longtime operators of Be’s Restaurant out front. (Be’s remains closed for remodeling.)

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Police investigating threat

June 12, 2021 1:48 pm
|    Comments Off on WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Police investigating threat
 |   Crime | West Seattle news | West Seattle police

We’ve talked to police about a threat widely posted on social media by someone who called us about it too. After numerous readers asked us about it via email and text, we wanted to let you know what we’ve found out so far. The caller said he works at The Alley, the bar behind Be’s Restaurant in The Junction, and that another employee had had a dispute with the owner and made death threats. We went to Be’s but it’s closed, and The Alley would not normally open until later in the day. We also talked by phone with the Southwest Precinct watch sergeant, who said officers had spoken with the person who reported the threats, but had not heard directly from the business owner, nor had they found the person who is reported to have made the threats. So it’s an open case but there is no warning or safety advisory at this point. If you have any information for police, the incident number is 21-145363.

BIZNOTE: Overhaul in front, live music in back

While in The Junction this morning to cover the vaccination pop-up, we saw this in the window at Be’s Restaurant (4509 California SW):

As the note on the right says, they’re overhauling the menu as well as the space at this Junction fixture. But there’s more to the sign on the left – not only is The Alley open in the space behind Be’s, it’s also hosting live music again. We’ve received an announcement from Jeff Ferguson on behalf of the Triangular Jazztet:

Live music returns to the Junction this Sunday at The Alley, where barmaster Cory is sure to delight and surprise with his custom designed cocktails (or just an old fashioned Old Fashioned). There will be two shows at 8 and 9 pm with no cover. Seating is limited and masks required while moving about the premises.

Meantime, we’ll be checking with the ownership about the timeline for reopening Be’s.

HELPING: 4 ways to do it in West Seattle this week, featuring ice cream!

(Lowman Beach Park, photographed by Theresa Arbow-O’Connor)

Four ways you can help your neighbors this week!

GENESEE HILL ICE-CREAM TRUCK: The Genesee Hill Elementary PTA‘s school-supply-drive fundraiser had to be postponed earlier this month because of smoke – but what perfect weather for the new date, tomorrow (Wednesday, September 30), 3-6 pm. The Full Tilt Ice Cream truck will be at Dakota Homestead across from the school (50th/Dakota) with cones for $6, including vegan options.

LAFAYETTE DINE-OUT FUNDRAISER: Also on Wednesday, you can help the Lafayette Elementary PTA by getting food from Chipotle (4730 California SW), 4-8 pm. No third-party orders – if you’re ordering online in advance, it has to be via Chipotle’s website or app. More info in our calendar listing.

FOOD DRIVE AT OLG: On Saturday (October 3), 10 am-2 pm, a food drive is part of Our Lady of Guadalupe‘s Drop-In Services Day. Here’s everything that’s happening:

Get your flu shot. Register to vote or update your voter registration. Pick up a mask and care kit. Help restock the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. One stop … a lot of good. Flu shots are provided by Walgreens and are free with many insurance plans (bring your card). Needed pantry items include non-perishable food (canned tuna/soup/chilis/stews, mac & cheese, pasta, peanut butter, pasta sauce), tp, hygiene items (soap, shampoo, conditioner), and household cleaning supplies (laundry and dish detergents, all-purpose spray cleaners, paper towels). Open to all wearing a mask and presented by OLG’s Immigrant Ministry.

This will be in the church’s north parking lot, 35th/Myrtle.

TOYS FOR TOTS: The pandemic will make this a challenging season for holiday helping, so some of it is starting early! Starting this Sunday (October 4th), the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle will collect Toys for Tots at the exit of the West Seattle Farmers’ Market (in front of Easy Street) from 10 am until 1:30 pm every Sunday until December 6. New unwrapped toys for all ages are needed. Also: An ongoing collection box is at Be’s Restaurant (4509 California SW) if you can’t make it to the Sunday dropoff.

BIZNOTE: The Alley reopening

Another reopening ahead in The Junction: The Alley, small bites and cocktails at 4509 California SW behind Be’s Restaurant, is reopening next Thursday (October 1st). Limited capacity, and masks required, 4 pm-10 pm weeknights, 3 pm-10 pm Saturdays and Sundays. The Alley will take reservations via email at info@thealleyws.com, but says walk-ins are OK too as space allows.

|    Comments Off on HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! 1 year for West Seattle Linux User Group
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle online | West Seattle people

Congratulations to the West Seattle Linux User Group, now one year old. If you’re interested, you’re invited to its meeting tomorrow, which is also an anniversary breakfast. From co-founder Justin:

The West Seattle Linux User Group (WSeaLUG) is celebrating its one-year anniversary this month. It has been a great year getting to know fellow Linux enthusiasts in West Seattle and beyond. We have have average of 10 members show up every other Saturday morning to enjoy chatting and learning from each other about all things Linux. We have also had a few presentations about items such as ‘installing and configuring a web server,’ ‘LUKS & YubiKey,’ and ‘Linux Firewalls & IPTables,’ to name a few. We were also community sponsors of the Seattle GNU/Linux Conference last November.

If you are a Linux enthusiast or want to learn more about Linux, we hope you will join us.

Tomorrow morning’s meeting is at a different location than usual – Be’s Restaurant in The Junction, 9 am (4509 California SW). Otherwise, the club usually meets twice a month at the Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) – check here; we list the meetings in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, too. (If your club meets regularly and is open to interested members of the public, we’d be happy to list your meetings too – e-mail the info to editor@westseattleblog.com – thank you!)
