CRIME WATCH FOLLOWUP: Bail hearing for accused gun-waving car-prowl suspects

ORIGINAL REPORT, 10:54 PM THURSDAY: The two men arrested two nights ago for alleged car-prowling and gun-brandishing remain in jail tonight, hours after a judge set bail for each at $100,000.

Court documents from this afternoon’s hearing tell us more about the allegations against the two men, ages 25 and 19, both of whom are listed as living at Admiral District addresses.

The narrative says police were first called to Bonair and Alki around 11:40 pm on Monday night. A man told them he was walking along Alki Avenue when he heard the sound of glass breaking and saw what he described as two males hit a side mirror of a black Dodge Ram truck and then break one of its windows, taking items out of it, then getting into a white Ford F-150 pickup truck (described as having a white sticker on the back window) and leaving. The pickup’s owner and three friends were in the area and the witness was telling them what he saw when, the report continues:

… the driver of the F-150 drove north on Alki Ave. SW; as they passed the Ram, both occupants of the F-150 waved pistols at the group. Approximately three blocks east on Alki Ave SW, the truck did a U-turn and began traveling back toward the Ram and group of individuals. As the F-150 approached the group of individuals, the driver turned the headlights off and stopped next to the Ram. The passenger held a small black “Glock subcompact” pistol out the door and was banging it on the outside passenger door of the F-150, while the driver held up another black pistol. The group of individuals feared they were going to be shot so they all ran and ducked behind the Ram. The F-150 left west on Alki.

As I did an area check for the F-150, a road-rage call was aired, stating a vehicle was being followed by a white Ford F-150 with a sticker on the back window in the vicinity of 50th Ave. SW/SW Charlestown.

The officer went to that area but didn’t find the F-150. The officer talked to the victims, a man and woman, around 12:15 am, and this is what they reported:

They were parked on the north side of Madison Middle School talking in the car when a white Ford F-150 pulled up behind them and turned its headlights off. The passenger of the truck got out with a golf club in his hands and approached the passenger side of the vehicle (the two victims) were in. The driver of the F-150 approached the driver’s side with an unknown “metal” object in his hand, which may have been a large wrench. The passenger held the golf club up like a baseball bat and yelled for the two to get off their block. In fear of being assaulted, (the victims) drove off and the F-150 followed.

The woman told police she recognized the passenger but not the driver. Less than 10 minutes later, another officer noticed a white Ford F-150 at the California/Charlestown 7-11, matching the description that had been circulated among police. The report says the driver was standing by the truck, while the passenger was walking out of the store toward it. Police took them into custody; the 19-year-old suspect was reported to have had a Glock 42 in his left front pants pocket, with “4 rounds in the magazine (but none) in the chamber.”

The report continues, “There was a Glock 10mm pistol lying on the dashboard of the truck, golf clubs in the back seat, and miscellaneous tools in plain view throughout the vehicle.” Victims from both incidents came to the scene and, the probable-cause documents say, identified both men as the pickup driver and passenger involved in the earlier incidents. Both are under investigation for harassment and theft; the older suspect is under investigation for unlawful firearm possession, as he is a convicted felon, while the younger is also being held on a warrant from southwest Washington for driving with a suspended license. Both are due back in court tomorrow, and we’ll find out if prosecutors will charge them or whether they’ll be released with charges possible later.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: Charges are now filed against the two suspects, 25-year-old Jory Preston and 19-year-old Justin Hoyt. We’ll have a separate followup later tonight with full details.

These POS need to be charged! WTF is wrong with them? Stealing from cars, coming back to the scene of the crime and harassing/intimidating the victims of their crime by waving guns? Then intimidating people just sitting in their car for no reason? These two are cowardly idiots who think they’re big and bad hiding behind a gun. Typical thuggish cowardly behavior.

And what the hell is one of them doing with a 10mm?! This is what some hunters use as a back up self defense sidearm in case of bear attacks because it can actually kill a bear unlike other handgun calibers that might just tick it off.

    PS,

WHEN these POS ARE charged, can we get pics. I’d like to be aware of these idiots if they’re living amongst fellow West Seattle residents

Photos are only available if (a) a suspect has served time in state prison or (b) happens to be a registered sex offender and therefore has a photo publicly available in that system. None of those appear to apply for these suspects, though I’ll be checking with the DOC today just in case. Otherwise, it’s a matter of photographing them in arraignment court (usually two weeks after charges are filed, and arraignments happen during group sessions that can last for hours, in a courtroom that does not lend itself to photography) or beyond, and while we go downtown for major cases, it’s a sometimes-speculative investment of time that we aren’t always able to make otherwise. – TR

Glad to here no one was hurt,  as a legal gun owner here is another chance to inforce gun laws already on the books. If a convicted felon with a gun is terrorizing people in our community and is “released with charges possible later” I think it’s a strong sign that new gun laws won’t help if were not enforcing current ones.

It’s not a matter of “not enforcing.” These two were arrested; police have done what they could do. So charges now are up to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the timeline depends on a variety of factors. I include that line just because, well, it’s true. If they are not charged today, that doesn’t mean they’ll never be charged, but it could be months, or never. We have a watch list of cases in which we find or get suspects’ names and we keep checking the system periodically, as we do with suspects who *are* charged immediately, because checking the online files is the only way to find out what ever happens with them … there’s never an announcement and even in high-profile cases, seldom any kind of media notification, so it’s just a matter of whether we happen onto some action in the files. Even in originally high-profile cases, like the one in which we recently reported the plea deal by a West Seattleite now awaiting sentencing for manslaughter (originally charged with murder) – though the shooting death in which he was charged drew regional coverage, so far as I know, we remain the only ones who have bothered tracking the case since he was charged. – TR

This trash thats living in our community needs to be taken out. I bet these guys wouldnt have done this without the other. I hope the judge throws the book at them. Im sorry for all the victims in this case.

Wow, coming back to the scene and waving their guns around. Terrorizing behavior.  I hope the judge gets all of these details. I see a bright future for these two idiots.  In prison, I hope.  Did their little, F-150 get towed away?  I think the story mentioned the perps live in Admiral. Does anyone in Admiral know  where a car of this description is usually parked? I.e, where do these rats sleep?

I would highly encourage the victims who were menaced by these bandits to persue a civil case. Hit them in the pocket book.

  • Seattlite June 24, 2016 (9:15 am)

The actions of these two criminals were bold, aggressive, and, frankly, dangerously out-of-control.  To think that they may be released back onto Seattle’s streets is both distressing and disturbing.  Their actions prove they should not be free for fear of injuring or killing innocent victims in the future.

Now that they are charged, I can say yes, the 25-year-old suspect, Jory Preston, is the same person charged in that case. Full writeup to come. Charges have just shown up in the system for him and for the 19-year-old, Justin Hoyt, who also is being held on a warrant from Cowlitz County. – TR

  • Mike June 24, 2016 (8:03 pm)

What is the warrant for in Cowlitz County?

    • WSB June 24, 2016 (8:11 pm)

      Driving with a suspended license.

  • Chuck June 24, 2016 (9:15 pm)

Wow. Based on the 2011 story alone, Jory Lee is all kinds of trash. Lots of illegal gun use then, and trying to push his GF in front of a moving vehicle!

i can’t wait until the jury is out on Jory. If there’s any justice at all, this guy will go away for a long time on his gun charges alone.

  • Josh June 25, 2016 (5:29 pm)

Any idea of what year the truck is and description of the sticker on back window?

  • Auntie June 29, 2016 (10:02 am)

I assure you that Jory’s family is NOT proud of his behavior nor do we condone the poor choices that he has made.  I cannot imagine the fear of everyone involved this night.  Or, for those of you who got your news from this blog only.  On behalf of my family, I am offering a sincere apology.  I am grateful to the police who acted quickly and very very thankful that no one was hurt (physically).  I understand that those of you who are replying to this post only know one side of the story but I ask that you stop with the derogatory remarks.  It’s just plain mean.  What kind of joy could you possibly get from threatening others, calling them names, judging them, berating parents?  Some of you may be incapable of empathizing with the depth of our grief and knowing what it is like to love a child so much and no matter how you try, he/she seems hell bent on self destructive behavior.  I don’t know Justin, but he’s someone’s child.  I don’t know his story, but I’ll bet, like Jory, people have tried to help him and that he is loved.  Instead of calling names and speaking ill of their parents, why don’t you pray for them?  Why don’t you volunteer in your neighborhood to be a mentor to a child?   Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.  I hope that none of you are in the same boat as we are.  I hate social media but felt compelled to reply.  I’m sure some some of you are going to make comments about me now or respond with some smart ass comment but for all those parents and relatives who are hurting today and all those kids that are on the wrong path, you are on my mind and in my prayers.   Also, for all the police officers out there who protect and serve us, thank you for all you do.

Sorry, comment time is over.
