West Seattle Crime Watch: Two car-prowl reader reports, including the case of thieves who immediately went shopping

In West Seattle Crime Watch: Two car-prowl reports. First, from the victim of one south of Morgan Junction – maybe you’ve seen one or more of the stolen items?

I want to report a brazen daytime car prowl in broad daylight. I’m a professional landscaper; this is my livelihood. I was working with my crew in the 6900 block of Frontenac [map] on Friday morning (Dec 11) between 9 am and 10 am, loading my truck with yard waste. When I had my back turned someone grabbed my bag from the front seat. The items of interest to the thief (iPhone and credit cards) are not as important to me as my: multicolored woven basket purse, canvas handbag with a ferris wheel on the flap, Key Bank checkbook and register, black spiral bound calendar, yellow legal pad, gray raincoat. If any neighbors see these items discarded, please add a comment. Incidentally, the thieves began charging on my credit card approximately 30 minutes after the theft: $750 at The Rack, lunch at McDonald’s, a couple of gas station purchases. Unbelievable.

This also is reported to have happened Friday:

Car prowled (Friday) night at SW Barton & 22nd Av SW [map], in the driveway. Nothing was in the car so nothing was stolen, but the glove box was open and the driver’s side door was ajar.

Crime report to share so your neighbors all around West Seattle know? Once you’ve reported it to police – send us the info too – editor@westseattleblog.com. If it’s breaking news, text or call 206-293-6302, any time day or night.

Sorry about this, but I’m shocked how many people leave valuables in plain sight in their car. Don’t. And lock it.

When thieves are successful they return time and again, prevention is the best cure. At this time of year many of them are actively working at theft, mail has money, packages, houses have new electronics, cars have new hats, coats, gloves, backpacks etc……..
Our gates have padlocks, we empty our cars every day of everything, we lock our cars even to go into the house for a minute, every time.

I’m at Cambridge and 21st. It seems like cars in this area get prowled nightly, like people are just waking this neighborhood checking all doors and taking everything inside. Ours got broken into last week as did the people across the street but two days apart.

Surprised by the mid day truck prowl on Frontenac, that corner is where two dead end streets meet. There’s nobody around and it’s not on the way to anywhere.

That’s disgusting…I’m on 18th and Henderson and someone stole my outside lights, while I was home

I’m always amazed that merchants in Seattle don’t ask for ID when using a card. I’m sure it would be a deterrent to thieves using stolen cards, at least where a cashier is involved.

Oddly enough, this very evening the Rack asked for ID when I paid with a credit card.

Can’t wait until we’re fully on chip and pin.

The McDonald’s and gas stations should have cameras. Try to get a snapshot by using the time stamp of the purchases, then check the vid just before or after the purchase time stamp. And talk to the clerk who might remember them to identify on vid.

Sorry, comment time is over.
