West Seattle Crime Watch: Burglaries update; ‘warmup’ car theft

GATEWOOD BURGLARY, AND WHAT PRECEDED IT: Our screengrab above from the SPD crime-reports map shows 15 burglaries reported in West Seattle this past week. (To get the specific locations/dates/times, access the “live” map here, and mouse over any icon to bring up the information about it.) The most recent, last night, happened to Greg in Gatewood, who e-mailed to report:

Tonight while we were out for dinner (between 6-8 pm), someone threw a brick through our back-door window and stole a few electronics. Needless to say we’re a bit freaked out, but wanted to alert our neighbors of this. 39th/Othello.

P.S. We’ll have a followup on the Dubsea Coffee break-in – which is in King County Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction, but popular with West Seattleites – a bit later. The shop reopened this morning.

STOLEN WHILE WARMING UP: We mentioned this in the morning traffic watch – per scanner, this is reported to have happened after the vehicle’s engine was left running to warm up. Once police confirmed the theft, this info was broadcast and posted to Twitter:

P.S. The next crime-trends update is expected at the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting next Tuesday, 7 pm, SW Precinct (Webster/Delridge).

Were there no crimes at all in Arbor Heights, or does the map still not include us after having been annexed more than 50 years ago? I’m so tired of being told that as I live in “Burien/White Center” I need to call King County…or that pizza delivery is “only within Seattle City limits”.

Please look at the live map if you want to verify – you can grab it and scroll around just like a Google map. I am just showing the areas where burglaries were reported in the past week, per the map – Duwamish Head is cropped out because nothing was there, southern AH and Arroyos is cropped out because nothing was there. You can zoom in, zoom out, look at the rest of the city, etc., with the link I’ve included.

Thanks, that’s what I did, and could not find anything for AH – that’s a good thing, right?

Yes, except for the times when the map is not up to date, which does NOT seem to be the case today – Greg’s burglary, reported last night, was already on there, for example.

re Dubsea Coffee break-ins; I went to White Center library for first time last night, got a tour, and was shown several boarded up windows; I was told the White Center Library and Greenbridge Library had multiple windows broken, same nights, 3 times, as Dubsea Coffee; why why why???

    • WSB November 14, 2014 (11:24 am)

Our previous story includes the KCSO mention of other break-ins (also Greenbridge Café across the street from Dubsea).

i went into dubsea just before noon and was told by the barista that KCSO had told them earlier they made an arrest this morning. doesn’t mean they’ve got the actual perp in hand, but maybe…

    • WSB November 14, 2014 (1:03 pm)

KCSO has announced an arrest but is cautious to say it might or might not be related. I’m writing that story right now.

of course…but if there is smoke, maybe the fire is nearby…i shall hope so for everyone’s sake.

also, Dubsea has nice coffee mugs for $8, i learned. I also am recommending the soft ginger molasses cookie with your drink of choice….holidayish and all :) They do Stumptown but have wonderful alternatives.

And the kids/young adult hoodies are beautiful – teal with a floral logo. Very nice indeed.

And did I MENTION? The Greenbridge Cafe across the street is fabulous, too! What a gift to that neighborhood. This is not hyperbole peeps. Interesting menu and super reasonable pricing.

Like my new mug says” “Give love. Get love. White Center.”

This seems like a good place to note that gasoline cars built in the last twenty years don’t require more than a few seconds to warm up. The loss in fuel economy to cold lubricants is offset by the fuel burned while idling.

Pretty sure “warming up” in this case literally means letting the heater run so the cabin is warm. I know plenty of people who do this.

  • trickycoolj November 14, 2014 (2:34 pm)

WC — I don’t they were warming it up for engine purposes more likely didn’t have an ice scraper and don’t want to get in a cold car. Heck even my 7 year old car doesn’t purr like a kitten when parked outside all day in the cold at work.

Sorry, comment time is over.
