Update: Police now investigating two Wednesday flasher incidents near local schools

(UPDATING 2:23 pm with additional information from police)

1:43 PM: Another West Seattle school has sent parents an alert about a reported incident of indecent exposure. This alert from Westside School (WSB sponsor) has been forwarded to us by parents who just received it; it was signed by assistant head of school Don Cunningham:

I am writing to inform you of an incident that happened yesterday. A student, during lunch recess, observed a man sitting in a car on 32nd Ave (our eastern campus border) with only a t-shirt on. The incident was reported to adults on campus (although later in the day), the police were informed, and the child’s parents were contacted. As some of you may have read, a similar incident occurred recently at Holy Rosary School, also here in West Seattle. The individual was described to be a white male in a black sports car. We have met with and are cooperating fully with law enforcement officials.

Here at Westside, the safety and security of your children is of the utmost importance to us. At the same time, we highly value the presence of parents and members of our community in the buildings and on the grounds. We have taken significant efforts to secure our campus, supervise our entrance and exit points, control traffic flow, and ensure that the facilities are run in as safe a manner as possible. Our perimeter is secure during the school day, after drop-off the front door is the only access, and all visitors are required to sign in.

What does this incident mean to us? It means, once again, to talk to your children about strangers. Help them to understand that they need to avoid situations where they might be vulnerable, including talking with strangers through a fence and particularly anyone that entices them into a vehicle or building. …

We asked police earlier today for any additional descriptive information about the person seen near Holy Rosary yesterday (the second such incident in the area of that school in less than a week and a half); none has been provided so far. We will be checking with SPD again right now to see if they have anything more on this case.

1:57 PM UPDATE: Police say they are putting together this information and cannot tell us anything more until they are ready to make it public.

2:22 PM UPDATE: Just talked to Det. Jeff Kappel with SPD media relations. He says they believe the two incidents yesterday might indeed have been the same man – the description was similar, including the vehicle.

Here’s what else he told us:

*The incident near Westside School happened around 12:30 pm yesterday but they didn’t get the report until four hours later – apparently the 7-year-old girl who saw the man did not tell anyone at school, but told someone at home.

She saw him through the east fence of the school south of 32nd/Holden, which is high off the street – she says the man was white, anywhere from 20s to 40s, short black hair, scruffy beard. He was in a “black beat-up car, sporty sedan, with body damage, parked on the west side of 32nd, facing northbound,” said Det. Kappel. The man had T-shirt on, no pants, he and the girl saw each other, nothing was said, no contact – he says none of the three incidents in West Seattle have had any contact between the man/men and those who saw him/them, and the exposer/s did not get out of their vehicle in any of these incidents. Again, he says the car and suspect descriptions from both the Holy Rosary and Westside incidents yesterday are similar, but they seem to be different – the vehicle, in particular – from the one at HR on the 9th.

3:35 PM UPDATE: Police have just published an SPD Blotter update with the information they gave us an hour ago as well as an overview, and contacts for anyone with information.

    Very disturbing.

This can’t be a coincidence. Two incidents at Holy Rosary, now this one at Westside. Sounds like it could be the same individual in different vehicles?

If so, I’d maybe be looking at the many car ranchers here in West Seattle to see if they have vehicles matching both descriptions at a single location. I can think of at least four such houses within a few blocks of where I live. Just a thought.

My son is a student at Westside, thank you for getting this information out quickly. The more exposure this description gets, the sooner he’ll get caught. I am hoping its just a matter of exposure and not something that will escalate.

I called it into the non-emergency line and the dispatcher took it as a suspicious vehicle report. She said they will go out today and check on it. I gave her a lot of info and explained the background on a possible tie to this situation.

This is very disturbing news. But after reading and re-reading the report how is it these children know these sleeze bags were not wearing pants if they did not get out of their vehicle?

Sending out the message for people to speak to their children about stranger danger is a definite must.

  • Tee September 19, 2013 (3:35 pm)

Oops, I meant to post that on the Holy Rosary topic, but everything still applies. This was in reference to me reporting the damaged black Infiniti G20 that just showed up in my neighborhood this past week.

  • Savannah September 19, 2013 (3:48 pm)

@Lisa – in the HR incidents, the suspect has had his vehicle door open (facing where the children are); vehicle was parked in the wrong direction.

I just read the SPD link above posted by WSB (thanks Tracy) and I should note that what stuck out to me immediately (before reading too far into it) is that the suspect today (at Westside School) had a red t-shirt on…the same color of t-shirt the suspect had on during the “first” HR incident on 9.9. Coincidence?

    • WSB September 19, 2013 (4:04 pm)

I’m sure they’re looking into everything. A reminder, the Westside incident was yesterday – word didn’t get out till today, apparently because the child didn’t tell anyone until after getting home from school. If the time frames are accurate, it was maybe an hour after the Holy Rosary incident, which was reported at about 11:25 am yesterday. Nothing reported today.

Media at West Side now, doing report. Allison Grandy I think.

  • Lisa September 19, 2013 (6:04 pm)

@Savannah-thanks for the additional information. Thank god mo one has been harmed by these perverts in these incidents, hope police catch there perverts. I worry anout the registered sex offenders, but I worry more about the ones not registered.

As the father of three, if I find the sick sob he’ll be missing more than his pants.

Anyone living within a few block radius of HR or Westside have security cameras that might show the vehicle driving by? Perhaps he drove around the block or through the neighborhood a few times looking for his place to park. If any readers nearby the campuses have cameras, check your footage and see if you have anything that might help.

Good point. I should also note that when speaking to the Alki Community Council tonight, Capt. Joe Kessler and Lt. Pierre Davis from the precinct said it’s a high priority right now to get this guy.

Perhaps we should have parents or something standing watch at the schools during the day until this creep gets caught ? It’s not like he’s going to realize the error of his ways, and stop. He’s going to do what he thinks he can get away with. I personally would rather us catch him before he comes up with a more dangerous idea.

  • T Rex September 20, 2013 (8:24 am)

He needs to have an unfortunate accident.

Even if he gets caught, he will be out of jail in 24 hours.

    • WSB September 20, 2013 (9:29 am)

T Rex, maybe not. I am working on an update about another case .. complicated and it’s taken me a couple days … in which the arrestee most certainly did not get out in 24 hours … or 24 months … TR

  • T Rex September 20, 2013 (1:14 pm)

Thanks TR, I let my emotion write my response.

I am sickened at what our world has come too that kids are no longer safe with creeps like this in the world. Everyday on the news is yet another story of child abuse, yet I feel our justice systems turns a blind eye at times.

  • Sandal40 September 20, 2013 (3:12 pm)

This whole thing bothers me to no end!! Even more is the correlation to the private schools … is it because of the uniforms? This dude needs to be caught fast – I would hate for it to escalate to the next level. Yesterday was a sad anniversary for myself and a ton of kids I grew up with, a friend of ours was abducted and murdered 28 years ago. I cannot stand predators of children.

KIROTV came out to do a story on it during West Fest:
