WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Child-luring attempt at Alki Elementary, according to note from principal to families

5:17 PM: Thanks to the Alki Elementary parent who forwarded this note sent to families by the school’s principal Mason Skeffington:

Dear Alki families,

I want to share with you some information on an incident from today that has affected some students in our school community.

This morning at approximately 9:15 a.m., it was reported that a stranger approached the fence line and attempted to lure three students away from the playground while they were playing near the fence at recess. The stranger shared that she had something in her car that she wanted to give the students. Our brave students recognized that this was a stranger, ran from the adult and went to report to our trusted adults on staff. The students were unharmed.

Upon learning of the incident, I immediately alerted our SPS Safety and Security, and they responded immediately with support from the regional support specialist. I contacted SPD, provided the details of the incident, and the investigation is ongoing and a case number has been assigned. I also alerted all staff at Alki and especially those assigned to recess duty. We will continue to remain extra-vigilant in supervision of recess, at arrival and dismissal, and throughout the school day as we move forward.

I’m sending you this letter to assure you that we are doing everything we can to support our students, and to suggest ways you may help your children.

Please know, the safety and well-being of Alki Elementary students is our top priority. You can help your children stay safe by talking to them about personal safety.

Remind your student to always be aware of their surroundings and not talk to strangers or go anywhere with them. If you are looking for guidance and tips, these resources might be helpful:

We all play a role in school safety. You can text or call the SPS SaferWatch School Tipline 206-222-4357 to report any threats to SPS schools. This phone number is managed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round.

If you have any information, the SPD incident number is 26-292903. We’ll add anything more we find out.

6:51 PM: Here’s the narrative of that police report, provided by SPD:

At 1309 hours, the principal … called 911 to report a suspicious incident that occurred around 0915 hours. He stated some 1st grade students reported an unknown woman had approached the playground’s fence while they were playing. She told the children she had a crown in her car and was trying to get the children to go with her to see it. None of the children went with her but she told the children she would return later. School pick-up was at 1425, so I headed to the school to be present while the children were being released from school.

While being a presence at the school, XXXX approached me and we discussed the incident. He said 3 1st graders had told faculty about the incident and could only describe the female as “grandma age” and in a silver car. I asked if faculty was outside at the time of the incident and he said there were, but none of them saw anything. I asked if there were XXXXX playground and the sidewalk. He said XXXXX.

I told XXXX I would document the incident in case anything further should occur. He said staff was going to be having a meeting about the incident so they are all aware and more vigilant in the future.

Can someone help me understand the timeline a bit better- the luring occurred at 9:15 am, but the school called 911 at 1309?

    • V October 1, 2026 (9:11 pm)

Curious too, why it took so long to call.

    • Natty RAD! October 1, 2026 (9:15 pm)

This was my first thought as well. That’s 4 hours later…

  • John Doe October 1, 2026 (8:00 pm)

Wait – it took 4 hours for the Principal to notify Police? And he let the kids walk home without letting the parents know?

    • Derek October 2, 2026 (9:42 am)

Maybe trying to get all the facts first before reporting something haphazardly?

    • G October 2, 2026 (11:51 am)

Not a good look on principal’s part. Sounds like the police were at school pick up, if I’m reading the police notes right.

    • k October 3, 2026 (9:08 am)

The principal notified police right away.  It took four hours for the principal to learn of the incident.

  • Marina October 1, 2026 (8:21 pm)

Thankful the kids knew something wasn’t right and went straight to adults they trusted. Wonder why it took 4 hours to call 911….

    • WS Parent October 1, 2026 (9:06 pm)

The school would have called district security first which may be why a call to 911 wasn’t made until a while later. Good reminder to talk to your kids about strangers!

    • mjc October 1, 2026 (11:17 pm)

Yeah, my thought too… why wait four hours. 4 minutes would have been better.

  • Ws October 1, 2026 (8:32 pm)

Pretty upsetting to hear this but Im also disturbed that the principal waited  4 hours to notify spd.

WOW!!!  Bravo brave first graders.  So proud.  Great job to their parents and other supporters.  This is how its done!

  • Chimole October 1, 2026 (10:09 pm)

They should  teach their kids to get li license plate numbers

  • Alki res October 1, 2026 (10:25 pm)

Why were the kids unsupervised long enough to talk to this woman without another adult even seeing it? I’m sure the teachers were doing everything in their power to keep an eye on everyone, so that speaks to a possible need for additional security during outdoor time at least.

This is my concern, too. Although they’re completely fenced in, there really should be adults watching constantly the same way a trained lifeguard scans the water!

I invite you to spend one recess on duty and do a better job.  The playground is enclosed by a fence.  There are hundreds of kids out there at one time and a handful of supervisors.  Please refrain from passing judgment  until you spend a day in their shoes,  This can happen in seconds.

    • SunriseHeights October 2, 2026 (11:17 pm)

Or to a need to teach kids to do exactly what they did. I realize the incident is worrisome, but you can’t just post security everywhere something happens that’s unsettling.

Clearly spoken like someone with no kids…my kids went to alki elementary years ago, VERY common for them to be playing in the fenced in field right there before and after school

      • Alki res October 5, 2026 (11:36 am)

They were in the playground, not the field. The playground is small.

  • Erik October 1, 2026 (11:18 pm)

I wonder if she had dementia and was unsupervised long enough to take a car out to the school. It doesn’t sound like usual behavior.

In this age we no longer have the luxury of giving people the benefit of the doubt, especially concerning children. Though far less common, there are female child predators. And “grandma age” to a 1st grader could mean someone in their 40s… My admittedly jaded concern would be that she could have been a confidence person (trusted female) used to lure kids to a vehicle on behalf of a male. Neither of us yet know for sure. My point is simply we, as a community, have to assume the worst. And I agree that the time it took to notify police feels like a huge lapse of judgment. We need to know exactly who this person was. Great job by the kids!

So the principal notifies the in school safety team but delays calling 911?   Make it make sense.  Seems like 911 should be the first call and the school district safety staff should be after that initial call.

  • anonyme October 2, 2026 (7:18 am)

Why are there no cameras around school perimeters?

    • K October 2, 2026 (11:17 am)

Because having a bunch of cameras pointed at little kids is super creepy?

      • Canton October 3, 2026 (7:32 am)

Flock does it… Is that still creepy, hopefully?

      • anonyme October 3, 2026 (10:55 am)

What an absurd response.  What’s super creepy is having creepsters creeping around schools and trying to lure them away without any way of tracking this activity.   You do know that predators photograph and video children, don’t you?  Apparently that’s OK, but having a mechanism in place that might stop them is too “creepy”.

        • K October 3, 2026 (3:03 pm)

Yes, I do know that predators photograph children, and that’s exactly why seeing some rando on the blog comments begging for more cameras at schools is super creepy.

  • Alki neighbor/parent October 2, 2026 (9:11 am)

Would love for nearby neighbors to give a look at their outside ring camera recordings to see if anything was captured around that time. Any information is helpful to SPD and especially the school.

Our kids were playing on the playground a couple of weeks ago and there weren’t any fences between the play structure and the street. The campus seems pretty open and vulnerable. Hope this was just a point in time during the construction wrap up and that the school design is secure to deter uninvited guests.

  • WestSeattleDerm October 2, 2026 (11:28 pm)

Grateful it wasn’t something much worse.Children on playground equipment at 915am aren’t typically Alki students, school is already on.Go easy on Teachers and Principles. They do amazing work.

  • WS Parent October 5, 2026 (12:06 am)

Can anyone tell me – is the playground secured (completely fenced and locked off from the public) all day? Is it ever open to the public, particularly during the school day?
