SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: Here’s what those fishing boats are going after

Thanks to Mary for the photo taken before the morning clouds cleared. As discussed here, the reason for the concentration of boats off west-facing West Seattle is that recreational fishing season is open for lingcod.

Ahhh the illustrious Ling Cod – Ophiodon elongatus. One of the flat out meanest, ugliest, tenacious, gear stealing fishes we have in these waters. Also (by far) one of the best eating.

Tight lines, anglers…. watch your fingers!

OOH yummy fish and chips coming their way and maybe some tangled lines!

Reminding me of seeing once a sea lion who happened upon a large school of Alaska pollock swimming past the point at Lincoln Park. He ate at least six or seven of these good sized fish. I made several photos of this feasting and one day I showed them to a woman from Ukraine who was living just north of the park. I said I had identified the fish as Alaska pollock and she said, “Alaska pollock. That’s what the Russian fishing boats like to catch. I hope the sea lions eat them all.”

Combat fishing.  That many boats so close together can take the fun out of fishing. Still better than working but I am getting too old and slow for warfare. 😁.

There’s an artificial reef there. Certainly not big enough to provide enough fish for four of those boats. Especially with size restrictions. Nice day but would be a poor use of my time. A lot of people found boats during COVID. Never seen it that busy.

Too many boats,  but you go ahead and tell everyone what’s there. Ya,  just stay home,  you wouldn’t want anyone to find you out there.

Sorry, comment time is over.
