WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: From rainbows to downed tree

(Photo tweeted by @i8iphone)

1:33 PM: Thanks to everyone sending rainbow photos! The wind alert from earlier today has expired but unsettled weather continues – rain squalls, sunbreaks, and still a chance of wind gusts. The rainbows showed up between the squalls.

Intermittent rain is forecast for the rest of the day but so far tomorrow’s weather is expected to be sunny!

2:32 PM: The current round of rain has been intense for more than a few minutes. Meantime, thanks to the texter who sent this photo of a tree down across 29th SW near Westwood Village Target:

A blocked public street or path can be reported to SDOT at 206-684-ROAD, or after-hours at 206-386-1218.

    Be careful out there.
A Fall City woman has just been killed by a falling tree.
With Seattle’s notorious backlog of its tree maintenance,
    in parks and roadways,
it might be best to stay inside.

A tree fell on my building today. I have been asking for over a year to have the trees maintained (considering the tree is on the property of a large city park). I was given a hard no. A few more inches and my roof would have more than likely caved in. I am lucky, it only broke the storm gutter and flattened most of my outdoor furniture. My fence is broken in half. It sounded like an explosion and shook my whole apartment. It was a combo of wind and lack of being maintained. I do believe it could have been avoided. I am not an investigator or anything, but I knew it was bound to happen. The city ignored it completely. I am just glad it wasn’t worse. They don’t call them widow makers for nothing. It is still sitting a few inches from my window. I live on the second floor.  We will see how long it takes the city to come and clear it out. What are the odds?…

Hear we go with Fear mongering again with the trees. This isn’t a maintenance issue. This is weather. Saturated grounds and high wind gusts. ANY Tree can fail at any time if the conditions are just right. I used to be a hazard tree investigator. Guess what?! Legally, my assessment is only good until I walk away. That’s how unpredictable trees can be.The logic here presented by some folks would call for a deforestation of the entire city 🤦🏼‍♀️ The odds of a tree falling on you are……….

This is innaccurate and in bad faith. This most CERTAINLY is a maintenence issue. Yes, you are correct that the grounds get saturated and trees DO fall down. But this is certainly a case of causation vs correlation. Do trees fall down in winds? Absolutely. We see it time and time again. With the invasive spread of English ivy and it’s unabated growth (on city property) trees become MORE vulnerable – not less. Also, the ivy strangles the tree. Weakening it from the inside out. Weak, sick and compromised trees throughout this city, Addressing the issue will instantly bring out screams of your hyperbole of “deforestation of the entire city” – which could not be further from the truth. When someone/something is sick – do we do nothing and let them/it die a slow, painful death? No. It’s a maintenence issue, pure and simple. Getting rid of the sick damaged trees for the betterment of our city. Remove/Replace/Replant. No more blocked roads, no downed power lines no more out of service. BUT as soon as a tree trimming truck shows up, the people get their pitchforks out, It’s bad enough on private property (where you should be able to do what you want) but on public property?? You might as well try to empty the puget sound with a spoon.

We are talking about two completely different things. There is no Ivy on this tree. The tree uprooted… The tree across 35th was a mid-stem failure. And yes all these people asking to cut all the trees down preemptively is ridiculous and that is what I am referring to.

The other day a man was ranting and raving about cutting all the trees down preemptively because of an outage on his street where he was inconvenienced.
He said he’s been asking the city to cut down those trees for a long time.

The trees didn’t cause the outage There’s plenty of line clearance It was a fuse issue and the pole caught on fire.

Also we don’t cut down trees that have Ivy on them we’d give them rings of life
