BIZNOTE: New gym planned for Westwood Village

Two years after 24 Hour Fitness left Westwood Village, the center’s owners appear to have found another gym to move into the space. Though the “for lease” sign is still up, documents in city permit files indicate that Fitness 19 has plans to take over the spot. Fitness 19 describes itself as “a simple fitness club concept – an extremely affordable, family-friendly facility that offers state-of-the-art cardio, strength, and free-weight equipment,” operating in 12 states; the only location listed in Washington right now is in Ballard. In addition to documents seeking a city permit to add signage for the WWV space, we’ve also found state records for a newly formed LLC on behalf of “Fitness 19 WA 318,” with Westwood Village’s address. We have an inquiry out about when they hope to open.

I love it.  We need more things like this in the area.  Hopefully something like a yoga studio can open up next!

This is good news. My family used that gym location for decades when it was Hart’s Athletic Club and then 24 Hour Fitness. It’s a good location for a gym because of the ample parking, nearby Starbucks, QFC, and it’s  centralized in the south end of the peninsula.

Hopefully they’ll have better security in their locker rooms than 24 hr Fitness did!!!

There isn’t ANY security in 24 Hour Fitness locker rooms….or anywhere in their gyms.

Wait, what? Good news about Westwood Village? Barns and Noble and Radio Shack were too beautiful to live; QFC went from nice to edgy; the gym folded when we needed exercise the most; Bed Bath and Beyond left, and the whole parking lot has come to resemble a surveillance nightmare from Orwell’s 1984 (for good reason, I hear). I’ve lived in the neighborhood near the Village for 14 years; I’m just not used to hearing good news about it. But…Yay!!!(?)

Hey Wavy David – the good news about WWV is that hundreds of people from our community are employed at the various businesses! That has been the good news for as long as WWV has been around even if some businesses come and go.  Gotta look on the bright side sometimes.

Oh, yay.  Ahem, I mean, yay! Blackstone, the multi-billion dollar NYC investment company and owner of Westwood Village COULDN’T CARELESS about its tenants or the customers they serve unless those tenants are a chain, franchise, or will kiss their almighty ring.  You will see more small business owners pushed out and this place will become another fake mall that failed in California in the 1990s. When anchors and larger concept stores have had enough, they too will leave.  Blackstone will just flip the page, sell the property, and move on leaving just another wasteland for another investor to clean up. This company doesn’t care about anything but the almighty dollar for itself. The know nothing about West Seattle or our community, nor do they have any intention to learn. Think about that the next time you patronize a small lone or family owned business at Westwood Village. It could be the last time.

The “wasteland” was once a wetland.  Maybe we should raze the whole thing and bring that back?

Yes!! We’ve needed another gym since 24 closed.  Very excited about this!

Finally! I was a member of 24 Hour Fitness but left due to overcrowding. I’m now retired and need to get back into shape. This new Fitness 19 will be a godsend for our community. I can’t wait to join.

I used to attend Fitness 19 in Oakland, CA. Was really a great gym and kept very clean by the members and staff. I’ll pause my 24 hour membership and re-join.

Sorry, comment time is over.
