WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Stolen orange Rad cargo bike (update: found)

The photo and report are from Mark in Alki:

My orange RAD Cargo E-Bike got stolen overnight November 6, 2022. The individual who stole my Ebike left a gray blanket there. They cut through my U-Bolt Cable Lock to steal my bike which was attached to our condo’s railing.

SPD Incident #22-298702.

MONDAY UPDATE: Just got a call. Police found it “by the RVs near Salty’s.”

Not that you need unsolicited advice at this point, and I truly feel for you, but unfortunately those cable locks are worthless. Some of our finest citizens in Yakima relieved me of the burden of my Rad bike off the back of my car while parked last summer and I had 2 cable locks on it. A decent $30 bolt cutter is all it takes. The strong solid steel U bolt might be enough deterrence but it has to be connected directly to the fixed object.

Oh, and always take your battery with you, even for 10 minutes. Some other fine citizens took mine off my rad bike in Alki.

Check the street behind Starbucks HQ in SoDo, specifically Utah & Holden intersection. I work near there and every day see a guy taking apart bikes in front of his RV. Cruisers, mountain bikes, every kind of bike. It looks like he rebuilds them into other bikes, but I can’t tell. Each day a new bike – it’s pretty amazing. Yes, cops know.

Highly recommend OnGuard chain locks for any bike. Much harder and awkward to cut through. https://onguardlock.com/chain-locks

That big orange bike is pretty unmistakable. I ride along several bike chop shops on my daily routes so I’ll for sure keep an eye out for it.

For now post your photos of it and serial no., and any other identifying info on bikeindex.org.

Sorry to say cable locks are not much of a deterrent. U-locks (depending on model) can be better. Better still would be one of each, or more (+ brake disc clamper alarm thingie, for ex.). Make the thief have to carry a variety of tools in addition to an easy to conceal (in a backpack?) bolt cutter, as alluded to above.

Just saw this bike getting loaded/unloaded into an RV on Harbor Ave (11pm on 11/7). It was the RV by Saltys parked behind another RV with a tarp covering it. I hope you can get it back!

Craig – you mentioned cops now, do you know if they have taken any action on the matter?

  • WSB November 7, 2022 (11:16 am)

Thanks for all the tips. Police found it where Alison reported seeing it, as noted above.

      Awesome!

Seems like there about 15-20 key guys who run the chop shops that if put in the license plate making business for 5-10 years would result in a dramatic improvement for the community.  Many felony crime conviction opportunities here so please keep this in mind when voting for your new KC Prosecutor.

WSB. Did SPD arrest the person for theft??

    • WSB November 7, 2022 (1:23 pm)

Don’t know whether there was a person involved in the recovery or whether the bike was just found with no one around.

Sorry, comment time is over.
