UPDATE: Teen to hospital after shooting at Delridge/Trenton

2 PM: Police have reported a person with a gunshot wound to the leg at Delridge/Thistle. More information as we get it.

2:03 PM: Texter says nearby Chief Sealth International High School is sheltering in place. A Seattle Fire “scenes of violence” medical response is now arriving in the Delridge/Thistle area as well as more police.

2:12 PM: Officers told dispatch they’ve found evidence – “three shell casings so far” – that the shooting happened in the 8800 block of Delridge. There’s also word that a Metro bus captured video of the shooting.

2:15 PM: Our crew at the scene says all they’ve been able to learn is that the victim is male. Meantime, police now report finding five casings “so far.”

2:19 PM: Police are looking for two suspects, one of which they have described to dispatch as a white or Hispanic male, 5’8″, gray sweater, brown pants, black Nike shoes with a white swoosh, silver pistol. The victim, who was described as alert/conscious, is being taken to Harborview. … The second suspect is described as a white or Hispanic male, 5’10”, black hair, black sweater, dark-blue jeans, black shoes. … As noted by commenters, Denny International Middle School (which is adjacent to CSIHS) also is in shelter-in-place.

2:40 PM: Police have just given clearance for the schools to lift their sheltering-in-place. No one in custody so far. Photos added above.

2:56 PM: A commenter uploaded this security video in which you hear the shots and a voice asking “Why’d you do that?”

Then two people are briefly seen on the right edge of the video, running.

3:45 PM: Police say the victim is 17 years old. Their update otherwise includes only one other bit of additional information: “Witnesses reported seeing a group of five or six young men fighting near Delridge Way and Trenton Street prior to the shooting.” They also request tips on their hotline, 206-233-5000.

ADDED 7:08 PM: Commenter TBD‘s video, mentioned below – this is from a camera on the rear of their vehicle:

I’m @ Delridge & Trenton and heard a skirmish in our building. Then 5-6 shots popped off. Incredibly close. I assume Denny & Sealth will be on lockdown?

  • Delridge neighbor November 22, 2022 (2:42 pm)

At around 12:34 PM I believe I saw the suspects walk by my front door on my ring camera. First they walked by towards the alleyway and then, five minutes later, they walk back towards Delridge. Something didn’t feel right (it’s really only us and our neighbors who walk by) and I watched them walk to the apartment complex across the street on the corner of Delridge and Trenton. I took photos of them and tried to post this to the ring app as a warning but it was denied. Then I hear the shooting take place right in the alleyway at 1:54pm. They match the description perfectly. I have called this information to 911.

    • Alki resident November 22, 2022 (3:06 pm)

Delridge neighbor, could you please post your pics? My son lives half a block from there and I want to see if they’re the ones in the alley.

    • B November 22, 2022 (4:37 pm)

The Trenton Apt.’s complex always has its door open. When I heard the shots after the skirmish in the building I immediately went and shut the door. In case they thought of hiding inside or something like that.

    • tim d November 23, 2022 (1:16 pm)

      can you post the photos?

  • RightNextDoor November 22, 2022 (2:44 pm)

Called SPD at 1:53pm. 6 shots fired. Sent info to WSB including the link below to the video that was captured https://youtu.be/yKooivI0qZ8

    • Delridge neighbor November 22, 2022 (2:48 pm)

So glad you have this on video! These are the two guys I have CLEARLY on video walking by my front door an hour before this incident. I called this into 911 to see if I can send in pictures but they never sent me a link to send in the photos, they just took my information.

      • RightNextDoor November 22, 2022 (3:03 pm)

Same. Nobody seems interested in the pictures or video BUT I’m assuming that they are still working the initial incident and will contact witnesses later when building the case. Emphasis on assuming. Who knows these days

  • Doug November 22, 2022 (2:49 pm)

Can the schools please do a better job of letting the students know the threat is external?  My daughter is scared and thought the shooting was in the Sealth side of the school.

    • Wordsmith November 22, 2022 (3:25 pm)

The schools use the terminology “Shelter in Place” when there is something going on outside of the school, and “Lockdown” when there is a problem inside the school or with a student nearby.

      • YES2WS November 22, 2022 (8:53 pm)

@wordsmith,, wow, I guess it really depends on the district. From a neighboring district:

        Shelter In Place

In the event of a chemical spill/attack or volcanic ash fallout:During this incident:1.     Bring students inside the building as quickly as possible.2.     Close all windows, shut vents, and seal exits and entrances to the building and ensure that they remain sealed; custodial staff will turn of HVAC systems in buildings.3.     Take student attendance and email any missing students to you appropriate school office.4.     Remain in room, but be prepared to exit when informed.

  • N November 22, 2022 (3:19 pm)

There are 2 shots fired in seattle on average every day. I was going to buy a house in highland park but now im not sure.

  • TBD November 22, 2022 (3:34 pm)

I captured the incident on my car camera – sent the video over to WSB and the police.

  • Denny student November 22, 2022 (4:00 pm)

it does feel like everyday it happens, im always scared to go places now, especially school. I had a feeling today was going to be another shooting becuase of the break and when the announcement came on i said i knew it. Whenever the intercom comes on my heart always drops, i start to get that scared feeling in my stomach just when i hear it come on. Today before the shooting an announcemnt came on and my body froze and it felt like the ding went on forever. No one should be scared of a announcement even before they know what there going to say. These shootings have become way to offen and are getting worse, i dont even want to leave my house.- Denny student

    • A. November 22, 2022 (8:17 pm)

Hi Denny student, I am so sorry that you are experiencing this fear while trying to learn and live your life. I’m an adult who also is feeling rattled and scared in the world with all of the violence and other tragedies. It helps to talk to people I trust about it. My kid went to Denny (they’re at Sealth now), and I remember that a lot of the staff were very supportive and nice. I hope you’re able to communicate your worries to counselors and teachers, if you feel comfortable doing that. I wish I had something else to say to help you feel better, but please know that many adult are on your side and working hard to make the world a better and safer place for you.

    • Ly November 23, 2022 (8:38 pm)

Hi Denny studentI feel bad for you and understand a bit how you feel. I was across the street when a shooting happened downtown Seattle in January 2020. We all ran for our lives. Ever since then I’ve been afraid to go to some places, I avoid crowded places and when I go to grocery stores my mind is always looking for the exit signs in case I need to flee. I am a parent and my heart breaks for you and other kids who have to deal with this type of fear daily. I grew up in a small south east Asian country and we didn’t have to worry about this nonsense.  Perhaps you can talk to your parents about a homeschool program. I’m so sorry, I hope you find a way to cope with your anxiety. Kind regards,Lynn

  • jim November 22, 2022 (7:10 pm)

Any idea of the why this shooting took place?  What was it over.

  • Steph November 22, 2022 (7:11 pm)

If I had not gone shopping at TJ’S after my doctor’s appointment today I would have been in the heart of this.  As it was I was one of many who turned my car around and left the backup.  As you all know this is just one of many shootings, stabbings, carjackings, rapes and violent crimes in the area.I had, during the summer had an interaction with the Georgetown stabber who was on the streets here.I could feel his dreadful,”vibes’ and it scared me a lot.Currently there’s a crazy thief very close to our house who’s been breaking into homes to get supplies for the huge pile of stuff he has built on the side of Roxbury St.  Thousands of cars see it daily.  This has been reported at least a dozen times but no action taken.  I mention these things because I am still smarting from the words of my now former doctor who said today my fear of being out and about is not valid. That I am paranoid! I need to just stop reading the news and “gossiping” with the neighbors.Did I mention the swat team take down at our door for another crazy street person who had been trying to break in doors and windows throughout the block?  They almost shot him because he reached into his pocket. We were on the other side of the door and probably would have taken the bullets. We have to drive to Lincoln Park for walking because these”safe streets,” are anything but safe. Now there’s been shooting at that park too.Is my 20′ pepper spray going to be effective against the guns? Do we have to stay inside forever and just use a rebounder and try to remember the sun and skys not filled with smoke?Maybe joining our family out of the country is not such a bad idea.

  • K November 22, 2022 (8:02 pm)

That is so sad. Please talk to your parents or a counseler about it. I feel for you. I would be anxious too.

  • Apotheosis November 22, 2022 (8:05 pm)

https://publicsafetysurvey.org/index.htmlTake the public safety survey to tell our city leaders that we need more law enforcement.

    • Westwood November 23, 2022 (10:39 am)

More law enforcement wouldn’t prevent something like this? I think what you’re looking for are restrictions on access to and storage of guns, which would prevent kids from so easily obtaining a lethal weapon in the first place.

  • Christopher B. November 22, 2022 (8:12 pm)

Wow. That video by TBD is incredible. Talk about Johnny on the spot! Hopefully this will help the SPD to wrap this up quickly. Broad daylight, in full view of a dozen motorists and a bus full of people. That shooter is begging to get caught. More firepower than brain power.

    • sam-c November 23, 2022 (9:54 am)

Wow. It really does capture the entire sequence of events.

    • ______ November 23, 2022 (8:15 pm)

Yeah TBD’s video is incredible. Based on that video, and the skirmish I heard in my building (Trenton Apt.’s) directly before the shots rang out, I’m now positive either some or all of those kids were inside the Trenton Apt.’s building before running outside, crossing the street (where TBD’s camera picks them up) and then the subsequent events that happened. It’s too coincidental. It wasn’t just kids running up and down a hallway. It sounded like a stampede that shook the building. Now the question is, why were they in the building in the first place (do they live here? Were they visiting a friend? Was the door open and they just popped in for a second? Etc…)?

      • TBD November 24, 2022 (5:52 am)

I can confirm them running out of the trenton apartments as I actually saw them run out of there and they then crossed delridge where the posted video starts. i actually sent WSB videos from multiple angles and one of the other videos makes it more clear that they were running from the trenton apartments direction and also shows their faces better. That video does however not show the actual shooting.

        • ______ November 25, 2022 (3:36 pm)

Thanks for confirming, TBD. I’m planning on relaying this info to the Trenton Apt.’s property management.

        • Nuzz November 26, 2022 (3:37 pm)

The boy in the red coat that got shot is my step-son. I’m looking for as much info as possible because we’re getting conflicting stories about why he was there and what happened. Is there any way I could see the addition videos you have?

          • TBD November 26, 2022 (6:06 pm)

Sorry to hear that it was your stepson – hope is doing better now. The additional videos don’t provide answers to your questions. He and the other three people ran out of the Trenton Apartments and the video posted captured the moments from then on. One of the  other videos show faces a little better but that’s about it. The police have all the other videos if you still want it but as mentioned, they will not help answer the specific questions you have. I saw them running out of the apartments and they crossed the street (Delridge) onto oncoming vehicles  when the lights were green and in between cars so it looks like they were in a hurry to get out of there.

  • Skeptic November 22, 2022 (8:41 pm)

What makes you think law enforcement is effective at preventing this sort of thing?

  • Rhonda November 22, 2022 (11:17 pm)

We used to own the 4-plex where the first video was taken from, next to 8808 Delridge. The area was troubled back then and it looks like it still is. We had lots of trouble from the bus stop and our tenants had their vehicles prowled quite a bit. I hope the shooter(s) gets caught soon before they hurt or kill someone else.

  • 56bricks November 23, 2022 (2:16 pm)

I don’t know if I can drink enough to stay in West Seattle.

  • Gabby November 27, 2022 (7:52 pm)

Any word of an arrest in this shooting yet? From the video, it looks like there are multiple vehicles that could have too easily taken one of these six bullets, shot in the heat of the moment from half a block away. Everyone who was immediately around this shooting is very lucky. Can’t help but think of the father shot and killed in a car by a stray bullet in a situation similar to this in the Central District years ago, right in the middle of a weekday afternoon. The person who did this is reckless and a danger. His hotheaded, stupid reaction will put him behind bars for a very long time.

Sorry, comment time is over.
