Here’s West Seattle’s newest crosswalk

Thanks to Christine for the photo! She reports that crosswalk at Hanford and Walnut [map] was installed today: “Honestly, this is a miracle. There is now a painted crosswalk and sign at Hanford and Walnut Ave SW. Hanford is a road that people speed on constantly, sometimes going 60 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone.” This is just south of West Seattle High School.

Cars travel WAY too fast on Hanford. I cross it often , always in a crosswalk and refuse to cede to any car. Often the drivers get extra aggressive until I pull out my phone.

Big improvement use the street a lot both on bicycle and vehicle.

Oh, yay! I use this crossing often on my way to the grocery store and I had no idea there were plans for a crosswalk. Even if this is just the pretense of pedestrian infrastructure, I’ll take it over nothing. I look forward to using the crosswalk.

Maybe one day we’ll get a sidewalk on 20th/21st and Holden. I see so many elderly and solo women braving the traffic by walking alongside cars.

Pretty sure women are just as adept at navigating traffic as men 🙄

Maybe those damsels in distress that RB spotted were just waiting for a courtly gentleman to come along and lay down his coat for her to use as a crosswalk. ;-P

          Probably

No complaints about the new crosswalk. It’s an intersection I cross by foot and by car regularly. But ultimately drivers (myself included) need to slow down and stop for pedestrians whether there are well marked crosswalks or not.

True. The reason why there are more women than men is because the alternative will be to take the stairs that go from Delridge to Holden. I believe the ladies don’t feel safe and that’s why they walk around it. Which it’s sad because they feel safer walking alongside cars than taking those stairs. I also saw moms pushing strollers and they obviously cannot take the stairs.

This is great news! Hanford needs more marked crosswalks than just this one, but this is a start.

Rb – get the abutting property owners together and form an LID to pay for the sidewalk.

    60?? No way.

    Glad to see the crossswalk.

Westbound, yes.  Seen it many times.  Eastbound no.  They don’t have time to reach that speed – but – they come over the hill from Californian at a good clip and are on you in a split second mid-cross.

        This.

Live four blocks away, kid at West Seattle HS. The westbound speeders you can see. It’s the eastbound folks flooring it up the hill that are risky, especially when you’re crossing southbound.

Not sure the crosswalk is a panacea but it certainly can’t hurt. Well done!

Good news. Too much pedestrian traffic not to have one.

Cars stopping on Hanford to pick up students at the top of that hill is dangerous. Seen it several times.

  • west sea neighbor November 2, 2022 (12:02 pm)

There is a lot of speeding through that neighborhood in general. Glad to see at least some safety improvements appearing.

That’s a good start, but the city should also install 2-3  traffic circles along Hanford to slow down the speeding traffic.

Sorry, comment time is over.
