West Seattle man on long road to recovery from serious injuries suffered in crash

Two weeks ago tonight, Bill More was out celebrating the Mariners‘ comeback playoff victory when something happened while he was riding an electric scooter. He was found seriously injured in the Jefferson Square area around quarter till six and rushed to the hospital. There, he was diagnosed with injuries including 8 broken ribs, a punctured lung, and head injuries. He has been in the hospital ever since, and facing a long road to recovery. Bill is a longtime custom furniture designer and craftsman who had recently moved to West Seattle with his wife Sarah More. Friends have been crowdfunding for them; one of those friends, Casey, contacted us, and says, “Anyone who knows Bill knows that he is a hilarious, intelligent, and fun guy who has a great love for his wife and nieces and nephews. Bill loves living in Seattle and exploring the city and the outdoors including hiking and kayaking. We are hoping and praying that he will recover and be able to return to doing the things he loves.” Casey says that after two weeks, Bill was moved today from the ICU and into Critical Care – “his brain injury has been classified as severe. He remains confused about what is going on and what happened to him. He has regained movement on his left side, which is really fortunate.” What exactly happened that night, she says, they’re not sure – “It only adds to the tragedy to not know exactly what happened” – but they do know Bill and his wife need help with expenses as he heals; anyone interested in helping can go here.

We were at Safeway two weeks ago on Saturday, and when we came out of the store in the front next to the sidewalk there was a couple with a boombox and an accordion playing music, dancing, and had a sign for donations. I went to the car to wait for husband who nicked into the liquor store downstairs and to get away away from the boombox noise.
The boombox noise stopped and husband returned, we exited the parking lot to find a crowd gathered in the street around a man who looked to be undergoing emergency resuscitation by  firefighters.
They had removed his shirt and the man was laying still in the street.

We had no idea what had happened so quickly. We did not see an electric scooter. If that man was Mr. More, the accordian/boombox people likely would have seen it.

I’m so sorry for what happened but grateful to hear he has survived and is on the mend. I will say a prayer for the recovery and future of Mr. More.

I’m unclear if the Police & the More’s are looking for witnesses but this accordion guy is at the Ballard Fred Meyer from time to time. And yes, it is very loud.Anyway, I wish Bill More the best. I have donated some money, I hope it can help a little.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. The city allowing scooters was a big mistake. This is the latest unfortunate example.

Cars are involved in more accidents and cause more injuries than scooters.  Are you advocating getting rid of those too because you want an injury-free city, or do you just hate scooters?

Wonder if there is any surveillance video that may have captured what occurred with him? I feel like Jefferson Sq parking lot has multiple cameras in it. Apartment building may have a camera that captured the incident. May be worth the family asking around. Sad story. Hope he has a speedy & full recovery. Did he crash the scooter from having medical incident? So many questions left unanswered it seems…

Certainly wish him a speedy recovery. But the city is worse off by having these motorized devices mixed into sidewalk and path space. They are also confusing and unpredictable on the road.  It’s our wall-e future where no one can propel themselves, or can be bothered to try. And to be clear, I’d be happy to ban cars from an area and let motor bicycles and scooters have the street. Let traditional bicycles have the bike lanes again.  But not a motor on everything future without keeping motor traffic together.

Horrible, any cameras? I’m all for putting cameras every where. We would have far less crime if people knew they were being watched.  For example the idiot doing 80 plus mph in the center lane all the way down California Ave this morning would be arrested!!!  Don’t posted about your loss of freedom. You only loose your freedom when you commit a crime.

    • CarDriver October 23, 2022 (1:44 pm)

Sillygoose. Sad reality is if you read WSB and watch the evening news you’ll see all sorts of crimes being committed by crooks. A whole lot are caught on camera. Didn’t stop the crime or get the criminal arrested. But have to ask, “80 all the way down California”?? Were you following them?? Did you call 911??

      • WSB October 23, 2022 (3:13 pm)

YES, video DOES get people arrested (and charged), as we’ve reported in multiple cases.

    • WSeaRes October 23, 2022 (6:07 pm)

@sillygoose. I think we need to be very cautious wishing for our country to become more of a surveillance state. Govt will abuse it as they do in places such as China…. If we could trust those in power and law enforcement to be trustyworthy and not abuse our civil rights and constitutional rights then that’s a different story. But time and time again we have seen how those in power from politicians to law enforcement agencies abuse their power. Give them access to surveillance cameras and we will lose all privacy and our rights. Everything in moderation and leave it to the people to protect ourselves not government!! We the people are responsible not govt to make sure we live in a safe society.

WSeaRes: In the US the citizenry have far more ability to alter government policy than in China. Some speed cameras are not a slippery slope to totalitarianism. Your attitude is embodied in the policy that prevents use of the low bridge enforcement cameras for any other purpose than catching low bridge violators. That policy has let the person who struck and killed Robb Mason get away with murder. There is little doubt that the car was photographed by the cameras seconds before Mr Mason was hit. But that evidence cannot be accessed by law enforcement. Morally this makes you and the legislators who wrote the restrictive policy accessories to murder.

        • Greg October 24, 2022 (4:22 pm)

“Those who don’t support a police state are accessories to murder” is quite a logical stretch.

        • WSeaRes October 24, 2022 (5:17 pm)

@Bill You are ridiculous and that logic is awful. You trust govt and those in power far to easily so I guess you haven’t learn a thing from history. The US govt and those in power are all but trustworthy. Learn from the mistakes of history! We don’t need a surveillance state like China and there is a constitution that must be followed to respect our rights as US citizens. Many other ways to catch the person who hit that biker than a 24/7/365 camera that will certainly be abused by those holding power over time. We need less govt not more!

Wow. That could be straight out of 1984.

  • Yes I Said Deathtraps October 23, 2022 (11:33 am)

Those electric scooters are deathtraps.  They have no place on the road with thousands of vehicles that could crush them at any moment.   Whoever authorized them for widespread civic use should be ashamed of themselves.

    • Lamont October 23, 2022 (2:07 pm)

Whoever authorized the thousand pound vehicles with distracted speeding drivers for widespread civic use should be ashamed of themselves.

  • Scooters Need to Go October 23, 2022 (3:00 pm)

Let the city know how you feel about the eScooters. Email scootershare@seattle.gov. Also, becky edmonds runs the scooter/micro-mobility program, and can be reached at becky.edmonds@seattle.gov. I agree–eScooters (and all of the illegal sidewalk riding) need to go. The city has known it’s a safety issue for 2+ years and has done nothing about it.

Everybody’s right. Everybody’s wrong. Would you find it in your heartTo kindly get along. This post is about a neighbor who was badly hurt. How can you help? You can help by donating to their cause. Not hissing and moaning about all the rest.

  • WET October 23, 2022 (7:36 pm)

I am so sorry for this person’s injuries. I am so sorry for our country that does not have universal healthcare. Imagine the freedom we would feel we had if our health insurance was covered.

    • Marc m October 23, 2022 (8:03 pm)

      Amen to that

  • Marcus October 24, 2022 (6:37 am)

Getting to be the point that surveillance will deter criminal behavior somewhat and yes that surveillance can be used for unlawful police activities, yet we are living in a society where personal responsibility is waning for many.  If surveillance would have prevented this tragedy then I think I would vote for the increase in surveillance.

Sorry, comment time is over.
