SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: USS Nimitz, northbound

2:17 PM: Thanks to David Hutchinson for the photo, and to others for the tips. The Bremerton-homeported aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) is outbound again, passing West Seattle while heading northbound earlier this afternoon. It’s currently off the west side of Whidbey Island, according to MarineTraffic.com. The last sighting here was less than two weeks ago, as Nimitz returned home from training.

4:35 PM: One tipster earlier mentioned the Nimitz was closer to Alki than usual when passing, The photo just added above, sent by Michael Ostrogorsky, shows what that looked like. Meantime, the carrier is now out in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, westbound.

Thank you so much. Also, thanks to the photographic gods for timing my arrival at Alki Beach yesterday just in time to catch the Nimitz passing by.

May God bless and protect the brave men and women serving our country aboard U.S.S. Nimitz.  Bring all of them home to port safely.

You’re looking at part of the trillions of government debt going abroad while people can’t afford to buy a home here.

Thanks fir the info.  As a ’73 plankowner it’s great to keep track of her.

What does ‘73 plankowner refer to?

“Plank-owner” means part of the original crew that COMMISSIONED a US NAVY SHIP…

A plankowner (also referred to a plank owner and sometimes a plank holder) is an individual who was a member of the crew of a United States Navy ship or United States Coast Guard Cutter when that ship was placed in commission. Per Wikipedia

I saw her once in San Francisco Bay. She was there for fleet week, and was leaving. I will never forget her. What a magnificent ship. I hope her and her crew always come home safe from wherever they deploy.

My son works the launch deck in that boat. He’s getting deployed in her in early December

I did some work on her about ten years ago when she was at the Everett Navy Base. She’s “Incredible”, just Gigantic!! I mean I’ve seen her here and there but you just don’t really understand how Big she is until you’re standing on top of her.

My sons been serving on her for the last 3 years.  Finally got a tour a few months ago now that Covid was winding down.  Truly an amazing ship.  We were fortunate to arrive just as morning colors happened.  Choked me up.  Needless to say, proud of our men and women protecting us everyday.

Sorry, comment time is over.
