Teen in the family? Online event to look at life after high school

If you have a teen in the family, it’s never too soon for them to start thinking about life after high school. Get some guidance one week from tonight – on Wednesday, October 20th, online at 7 pm, the West Seattle High School PTSA presents “Set Up for Success – College and Career Planning.” They’re inviting all local families, not just those with WSHS ties. Here’s the announcement:

Join the West Seattle High School PTSA for an informative evening with a panel of knowledgeable counselors, staff, parents, and students assembled to give a better understanding of the options students have after high school, how to best utilize high school for the future, what resources exist and where to find them.

While the panel will be West Seattle High-centric, the bulk of the information is universal to all SPS students.

You can register for the meeting here: us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZArdu6tqzgrG9eAkKvOOAlgtH84zuCkwjbG. Once you register, you will be sent a Zoom link for the October 20th meeting.

We have also put together a brief survey for your input so that we can best prepare to address your specific questions. To fill out the survey, please go to https://forms.gle/nzEYCFPFty8bD4sX7

Military worked out for me. Gave me time to cool my jets, learn a trade and grow up a bit. It’s not for all but for some can be beneficial. Remember JFK’s immortal words.

This is exactly what my youngest son is doing.  He is learning boat engine mechanics.

Lucy, my son was Marine Military for 5 years.  At the end of his 5th year he has asked so many people who were on the bases with him what they planned on doing.  A few told him about the Merchant Mariner program back East.  It is all free.  You have to stay there for a year for training.  He said it was like being in the military as you were with a group and you learned everything about ships.  You could then pick what you would like to concentrated on, Food industry, Mechanic of the boats, Deck Hands.  He kept going back for training and upgrades as he started out as an Oiler (working in the bottom of the ships keeping the engine’s running) He ended up being an electrician.  He now has a job with WSDOT working on the the 1st Ave So. Bridge as one of the Electricians.  Good luck to your son.

Wow!  Good for your boy!The military may not be the best choice for many, but for my boy it seems to be a good one. He loves the discipline and the comraderie.  He is learning a skill that transfers to civilian life and he loves it.  Thank you for the positive feedback!

Counter to your recommendation, college THEN the military worked well for me. However, I think my military experience provided no added benefit (outside of working directly in my area of study) when applying to grad school and ultimately finding a job.

Sorry, comment time is over.
