RENAME THE TEAM! You can vote on two options for former Highline Bears

Here’s your chance to rename a baseball team! The White Center-based (former) Highline Bears announced earlier this year they were pursuing a new name. Now it’s down to the final two, and they’re inviting you to help choose. From today’s announcement:

Today the Highline Bears summer collegiate baseball team announced the final two possible new team names. The final names are the DubSea Seal Slingers and the DubSea Fish Sticks. The team will now let the community vote online for which name they want to see on the field next summer. Fans can vote online at RenameOurTeam.com, and they can also vote by pre-ordering merchandise of the logo and team name they like best. Voting will remain open for four weeks and the final team name will be announced on November 15th.

Back in June the team announced they would be renaming the team and ran a “Name the Team” contest for 2 weeks. After receiving more than 200 entries, they flew in the baseball-branding company Brandiose. The branding company has helped name dozens of teams in minor league baseball over the past fifteen years, including the Rocket City Trash Pandas and Armadillo Sod Poodles. While in town in July they canvassed the area, ran community focus groups, and brainstormed with the team about what direction they should go. Over the course of the past three months the team has been working on narrowing down all the fan entries, checking trademark statuses on potential names and developing the final two brands,

The team plays more than two dozen games during regular summers (not the past two years, though) with a 40-player roster of college players from around the country, who stay with host families during the season. Their home field is Mel Olson Stadium at Steve Cox Memorial Park in White Center.

I have to agree. Super poor taste. Guessing this one doesn’t get the Seal Sitters vote. :/

Can someone tell me the origin of “DUBSEA”  I see the name around the WC area on apartments, coffee house and so on but don’t know where it came from???Thank you

Guessing the “dub” stands for “W” making it “Dub/West Sea”?

      • Your thoughts October 13, 2021 (4:40 pm)

I guess that could be where it came from???

The actor Dub Taylor’s real first name was Walter.  He was called “W” by his friends which was then shortened to Dub, like U Dub.  I’m guessing DUBSEA is the same as WC for White Center!

Guess I’m showin’ my age because I knew who you are talking about!

Seriously?  These are the choices?  Both are repulsive!

Today I learned that a baseball-branding company exists. Who knew!?

I had the same reaction while writing this. The ex-Bears have been known to be a little pranky so I didn’t believe it until I looked up the company’s website – TR

They just swung at two fastballs way outside and in the dirt.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to vote for “neither” on renameourteam.com.  I tried.

Brandiose, the consultants, make a big deal about being open to other ideas.   If you feel strongly about these monikers, you can comment directly to them and the team on your favorite social medium.  See  the links to their websites in the article.

Both names and logos are so odd, that I wonder if this is the first step in a maneuver to get more of the community aware of and involved in the name change?  That would be the best outcome, IMO.

I don’t like either name at all! Seal slingers reminds me of killing seals with a big stick like I have seen on tv! What a horrible name for a child baseball team. Aren’t people who are coming up with these names have any formal education on what the name could imply to certain people?

This doesn’t cancel out your concerns but just for accuracy’s sake, this is a college-student baseball team, not children.

Dub C is my favorite burger at Boss Drive In.  Had one last night!  (I’m guessing that’s not what the team was going for, what’s wrong with Bears?)

I’m guessing some bears, some where, some how were offended.

“I don’t like fun baseball team names and think they should consult my curmudgeonly opinion” 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩Grow up and have fun, people. Check out the Savannah Bananas and the Portland Pickles, they’re doing it right. Record attendance, community support, and keeping baseball fun.I’ll be there cheering for the WS Stix!

They never explained why they needed to change the name.  Was it something like trademark infringement?  As someone who purchased Highline Bears gear previously, I’m a bit miffed that they have made it obsolete.

If I am not mistaken our resident Orcas eat salmon rather than seals? That makes the Orca/Seal logo a bit confusing. Fish Sticks is funny but also conjures up grade school memories of Fish sticks for Friday lunch. Also the Gorton’s Fisherman comes to mind.

Horrible names all around, Start over!

  • helpermonkey October 14, 2021 (9:26 am)

So many strong opinions for people who have likely never been to a game or heard of this team beforehand. Hilarious! Being a South Park fan, I voted for the Fish Sticks. Kanye West not approved.

  • MiniCooper October 14, 2021 (11:35 am)

College-student age team the name Fish Sticks seems “odd” but who am I to say???

Sorry, comment time is over.
