CORONAVIRUS: 71 new cases reported by Seattle Public Schools – here’s our local breakdown

Monday brings the weekly update for the Seattle Public Schools COVID-19 data dashboard. A commenter pointed out last night that SPS had made changes since last Monday – so we are chronicling the difference between the numbers that were on the SPS site as of last night (for example, the districtwide total had been reduced by two, to 343, since last Monday), and the updated totals published today. 71 more cases were added today, districtwide, for a total of 414 so far this school year – this week’s increase is close to those reported each of the previous two weeks. Here are the school-by-school breakouts for our area, with the changes compared to what was on the dashboard last night – again, the numbers are cumulative for the entire school year so far:

Chief Sealth International High School – 16, up 4
Denny International Middle School – 15, up 2
Roxhill Elementary – 9, up 1
Highland Park Elementary – 9, up 1
Madison Middle School – 8, up 4
Genesee Hill Elementary – 6, up 3
Lafayette Elementary – 6, unchanged
Arbor Heights Elementary – 4, up 2
West Seattle Elementary – 4, up 1
Gatewood Elementary – 4, unchanged
Concord International (Elementary) – 3, newly reported this week
Sanislo Elementary – 3, up 2
West Seattle High School – 3, unchanged
Pathfinder K-8 – 3, unchanged
Fairmount Park Elementary – 2, unchanged
Louisa Boren STEM K-8 – 1, unchanged

Still no cases reported at Alki Elementary, according to the dashboard.

Please, please, please be kind to your children’s teachers. We are trying so hard to keep our students safe, and it’s achingly hard. Some of us are dealing with verified Covid cases in our classrooms, but we suck it up and continue, putting our lives and our family’s lives in possible jeopardy, but doing what we can to maintain distancing, correct masking, hand sanitizing, etc., among our students. It’s an uncomfortable situation in which we find ourselves.

Why would you be “dealing” with verified covid cases in your classrooms? Should they not be in a quarantined area in a nurses office and being sent home? Oh…NOT on the school bus.

K, thank you for your kind and important efforts.

Thank you so much for all you do teachers and school staff. You are giving our children an incredible experience even in the face of incredible challenges.  Thank you!!!

The Original Roxhill building currently houses 3 different SPS programs.  There is at least 1 positive (student) case there, but I do not see any reports for that building/those programs.

Yes, the Bridges Transition Program at old Roxhill should be reported, as well as In-Tandem and Interagency. Until every person who enters a school building is tested daily, there will be Covid in schools. That’s always been a duh. I retired in Sept. It was time, anyway, but I would have quit rather than teach during Covid. I love(d) my students, but was not willing to sacrifice my life to Covid for their sakes.

Any idea on how the local private schools are doing?

Thank you to all the teachers!! We got notice of a confirmed case in my daughter’s class last Monday, but were not identified as a close contact so she was able to continue to go to school. It was stressful for us, and I’m sure even more stressful for her teacher! My daughter remains healthy and I am so grateful for all the steps that her teacher and the school, Genesee Hill, have taken. WSB…I think your numbers for Genesee Hill might be off. I think it should be up 5 this week, based on the report of one confirmed case as of last week.

Hi – as noted above, by Sunday night, SPS had changed some of the numbers it reported last Monday. While the districtwide total was down a few, some schools had cases added. Genesee Hill was one of them – by Sunday night the dashboard showed 2 cases, so that is why above it shows that 6 cases was an increase of 4, not 5.

I think the dashboard shows only cases that are known to have been transmitted at school.  For example, a student attends school during their contagious period.  They notify the school and contact tracing is done.  Any students that then report that they are covid positive from that traced group will be counted on the dashboard.  I do not believe the dashboard shows every positive case among people in the schools.

As a teacher at Madison middle school I’d like to say thank you for the kind words from the community. Couple of things for those parents who are reading. Please make sure your child is wearing a mask that fits properly. Every day I’ve got to get out at least 2 dozen reminders for students to pull her mask up over their nose. Also, monitor your child’s TickTock. The TickTock trend devilish Licks has caused massive vandalism at Madison and other schools –  causing us to close the boys bathrooms. It is not good to have to close the bathrooms during a pandemic.

Please note that Seattle Public School Custodians,  have the added responsibility of ordering and distributing PPE, checking to make sure all HVAC  systems are working properly and sanitizing every classroom daily.    These added responsibilities only came with a  2% raise and put them behind Highline and Bellevue pay rates.

Sorry, comment time is over.
