WEST SEATTLE BRIDGE: Updates tomorrow

(WSB photo from July: West Seattle Bridge seen from Harbor Avenue rooftop)

The next major public updates on the West Seattle Bridge are expected tomorrow, when the Community Task Force meets online. We just obtained the agenda – see it here. SDOT has said previously that a repair-schedule update was expected this month as consultant WSP approached completion of the repair design and contractor Kraemer NA started gearing up for the work. Along with high-bridge updates, the agenda also includes a briefing on how low-bridge-access policy is expected to change when Terminal 5‘s first modernized berth opens early next year, and a discussion of West Seattle transit service. You can watch live (or archived afterward) at noon tomorrow (Wednesday, September 15th) at this YouTube link.

I am curious whether, and to what extent, the global materials and supplies shortage is impacting the estimated mid-June 2022 completion date.

Just Bondo and rubber bands,  no problem.

Don’t forget the labor shortage too.

I hope when they look at low bridge they revisit boat restrictions during rush hour. Huge impacts on traffic and it seems to happen frequently – buses, emergency vehicles, even those not going over the bridge that need to get through the awful 5-way intersection.

The city has absolutely zero control over the bridge openings – as we’ve reported many times, the feds have jurisdiction and have repeatedly refused requests for restrictions. There have been some voluntary “we’ll try not to” promises, and that’s about it.

Am I the only person who thinks we have been way too tolerant in accepting the fact that the West Seattle Bridge hasn’t been repaired yet?

They never promised anything earlier than mid 2022. Let’s chill until we learn otherwise.

Oh, I’m very aware about the timeline that was “promised”.  I was just musing how so many of us just accepted that this is the way it’s going to be, and so many of us  just accepted this without more of a fight, or pushback; that the West Seattle Bridge is so important that this “promise” should have had more urgency.  Hey, I don’t want to live in China, but I bet that the repair would have been done way before mid 2022 there! I want the project to be safely done, but it just seems to me that like lemmings, we all just had a collective “sigh”, and thought, well, this is the way it has to be.  I’m so “chill”, that I’m freezing!

What would you have us do – storm City Hall with torches and pitchforks, demanding bridge repair NOW, or else? Or else what? We are stuck with the city leadership that we have and I don’t know what any of us could have done to change it.

Only in Seattle does it take 2 years to repair a bridge that ANY other city would have fixed in 2 months.

Just a note to dude trying to avoid the traffic flying up Highland Park hill (Wednesday approx 5:20pm) in the red Ford SUV with flashing AFTER MARKET lights…. https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9a.60.040

SDOT has no shame.  They can and should do better.

Sorry, comment time is over.
