DELRIDGE PROJECT: Next phase of work includes signs and signals

(SDOT photo)

Bus-lane markings and striping are finished along the Delridge RapidRide H Line conversion project corridor, SDOT says in its weekly preview of what’s next. First, here are the toplines:

*Painting for the new street layout is now complete

*We will continue installing new traffic signs as part of the new street layout

*Landscaping and signal upgrades continue throughout the corridor

*Median and curb installation along Delridge Way SW between SW Juneau St and SW Graham St continues. This work will occur at night to limit impacts to traffic, residents, and students.

*Traffic signal upgrades and curb ramp adjustments have begun at SW Thistle St. This work is anticipated to last for several days.

Here’s the full list of planned work zones for the week ahead. The Route 120 conversion to RapidRide is set for September of next year.

The “signal upgrade “ at Delridge/Holden is the opposite of an upgrade!!!!

It’s absolutely an upgrade for those of us riding the bus. You should join us! It’s cheaper and better for the planet.

There’s a global pandemic, Jort. I thought you’d be on your bike.

100% agree. I can’t turn right on a red anymore? It’s like WSDOT is trying to make us spend more time in our vehicle/bus.

Huge upgrade! I was excited, as a cyclist, to see a bike signal so we’re protected from cars turning right while riding in the bike lane, by obeying the bike signal.I love that I can get from the low bridge all the way to white center via low traffic Greenway of 26th to Juneau into the bike lane the rest of the way.

SDOT👍🏼You rock.  Thanks for making it so easy to get around the city! I don’t know how we survived all these years without your road diets and other improvements. Keep up the great work.

The BUS ONLY lane southbound between Graham and Orchard is so labeled, but there are no red lines to call attention to that fact, so many people just use it as a regular driving or passing lane.

I was wondering why the city didn’t mark the bus lane there?  It’s supposed to be bus only for end of day commuting traffic.

I’ve been wondering why that part of the bus lane is not painted red like other areas too.  But I also noticed that there are signs that say, “NO PARKING 3-7pm” So, does that mean that people can park outside of that time, in the bus lane?  It’s the only part of the road that would be parking, since it is (plastic tube separated) bike lane at the curb..

I would assume that the location of the bike lane was chosen to enhance safety/riding experience for cyclists.  Diverting the bike lane past Nucor Steel to have us fight with the semis for our lane is ridiculous.  To do this, they removed the loading zone for the Delridge Deli Mart and other businesses in that complex.  I will just ride Delridge to Genessee instead.  What a waste of my money.  And don’t get me started on the Delridge/Holden signal upgrade or the medians that make lanes so narrow that you can’t cycle safely on Delridge anymore.  It seems as though SDOT has managed to make the Delridge “upgrade” worse for all users of the pavement and local businesses.  Well Done!

Agreed!  Jort notwithstanding (does he live in here?) the whole project is a total masterclass in mind-f-ing all types of users.  SDOT has given us a mocking middle finger..

  • No Right Hand Turns?! September 13, 2021 (2:35 pm)

Adding these ridiculous  curb bulbs to prevent folks from making right hand turns is frustrating to say the least. We are creating extra idling traffic in neighborhoods from all the backups if one car decides to make a left hand turn, you can’t get around them. I have already seen aggressive and frustrated drivers (delridge/ barton intersection), as if they needed more reasons to be aggravated with SDOT.

Yes, considering buses have to turn left there too, from Barton to NB Delridge, they’ve really clogged things up. With the curb changes there, everyone just sits (including other buses), not making it through the light, as the bus waits to turn left on a yellow/red.

“*Painting for the new street layout is now complete”What about the lane markings on SB Delridge at Orchard? They are still the temp arrows/ markings in the lanes.  Someone needs to tell them they forgot something.

The “landscaping” they are doing along the parking strips between Holden and Trenton seems to consist of dumping dirt on top of weeds. Do they think they are going to smother those weeds? I guess they figure that it is technically the homeowners’ responsibility to maintain the parking strip, so they don’t care.

Sorry, comment time is over.
