BIZNOTE: Owner of 35th North to open shop in West Seattle Junction

The former Verizon store on the ground floor of the Senior Center of West Seattle building has a new tenant. The owner of the Capitol Hill skate shop 35th North is taking over the space. Tony Croghan tells WSB that this shop will have a different name, TBA, as he wants each of his shops to have its own identity. It’s smaller than the Capitol Hill space but will carry much of the same merchandise – skating equipment, apparel, shoes, etc. He also hopes to include an “art wall” and will participate in the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. Expanding here wasn’t a long-held goal, but when he heard about the space opening, Croghan said, it just made sense. He is a former West Seattle resident, now living in Burien, but often visits because his family still lives on the peninsula. He’s hoping to open the West Seattle shop by December. (P.S. For more on what 35th North is like, here’s a story from our friends at Capitol Hill Seattle Blog.)

Great news for the neighborhood! 35th North is one of my favorite shops. As a lifelong skateboarder(I’m 45) here’s what I’ve seen local skateshops bring to local neighborhoods.-A place for kids that are considered “weirdos’ or “different” to feel a sense of belonging.-More kids on skateboards, outside, instead of inside not moving their bodies. Skateshops breed skateboarders.-Increased cultural competency (skateshops and skateboarders have opened up worlds of music, design and art that I wouldn’t have known about)-A place where kids are welcome.

This is great news. 35th North is an amazing shop. And Tony is a great guy that has done a lot for the community. I’m excited for this.

Where did the Verizon store go?

Explained in the linked story (first line). The owner retired.

My stepdad took me to the original 35th Ave skate shop in Des Moines when I was 12 and bought me my first “new school” skateboard. I’m 39 now and still remember that trip vividly. Skateboarding is special. Happy to see them come to West Seattle.

Best news. 35th North (and 35th in Federal Way) do a ton to support the local skate communities.Really hyped not to go off island to pick up skate gear and support our local shops and artists.

Speaking of skating and a place for youth that feel like weirdos or don’t fit in with the establishment, I hope they will consider hosting live alternative music–punk, garage, techno, industrial.

A win for WS, a win for the Junction. May this please be the prelude to closing California ave for a day or two in the summer to set up a skate park in the street

I’m glad to see that the retail space isn’t going to another real estate office. Another store to add to the unique shopping in the Junction!  Welcome!

Welcome! Will you have gear and equipment for rollerblades like wheels?

    • Wes C. Addle September 14, 2021 (4:22 pm)

Probably not since it’s a skateboard shop.  Their other shop doesn’t have any of that stuff.  In-Line Skaters and Skateboarders are like oil and water.

Great news! I miss the skater culture and community from my youth and will definitely be stopping in with my kids!

This brings back memories of when Kyle first started selling us skateboards out of his parent’s garage on 35th Ave. (west hill of Kent) in the late 70’s when we were in High School. He was adamant that skateboarding wasn’t a fad and would be around when we’re old. Kudos!
