Two cases of vandalism, both against symbols of the fight for racial justice:

DIVERSITY CENTER SIGN DEFACED: From Jean Iannelli Craciun at the Diversity Center of Washington in Morgan Junction:

I am sad to report that the Black Lives Matter sign we have had out front was marked with an X across the front and thrown down. Luckily the other side was not damaged and we could re-install it on that side. We were surprised to see this and it made us sad and angry….after all, this is West Seattle!!

MURAL VANDALIZED: On the south edge of West Seattle, Desmond Hansen‘s George Floyd signal-box mural has been vandalized again, this time with green paint splattered across it and someone then scrawling Black Lives Matter across the green blotch. This is not the only one of Hansen’s box murals to be defaced – his portrait of murdered hip-hop musician JuiceTheGod at 35th/Barton and the BLM-themed box at 42nd/Alaska have been hit too.

Very sad, i am glad that WBS is reporting such action. Only way to remove the dark is to illuminate it.

Did you report the Hiawatha vandalism? That needs to be painted over right away. There is supposed to be graffiti-resistant paint out there, which the city should look into. But not sure what they can do about the mural. So sad.

The mural will be repaired, again, I’m sure. Desmond had an ongoing GoFundMe for supplies that recently closed and which raised $20,000. Sad to see it go to repairs instead of only new art.I’m not sure if he does a final coat of anti-vandal paint or not. I’d certainly hope so since it’s a recurring problem.

  More people call them racists because that’s what they are. Fascists are something else entirely. You may think crying “fascist!” makes you sound more erudite, but the opposite is true.

Terrible. People with information should tip the police. Also, it seems timely to fund and commission more murals that celebrate black lives.

My kids go to Gatewood, and for over a year, any sign regarding racial equality or BLM that has been put up at school has been torn down. It’s really frustrating when our kids put their feelings into a sign they’re proud of, only to find that its been ripped down the next day by some neighborhood racist. You just don’t expect that in our community. It’s really sad.
