READER REPORT: Plane lands off Seacrest

An unusual sight off Seacrest this morning. The photo and report are from Catie:

A floatplane touched down in Elliott Bay a little after 9 am today. Pulled into the rocks at Seacrest Cove (by the pier closest to Salty’s). The pilot jumped out and checked on the plane, then hopped back in and took off.

Floatplane – more formally, seaplane – takeoffs/landings are a much-more common sight on Lake Union, north of downtown.

LaSwooped into the water. Motored over to Saltys. Pilot spoke with waiting gentleman and the hopped back on and flew away.

At least this landing had a better outcome than the big plane that “Crash” landed there a few years ago.. Wasn’t that one a restored plane? At least the pilot was okay..

Heard a single engine plane early this morning around 3:45. Woke me up so not sure if it was more than one or it was circling for a bit.  Very out of the ordinary for our neighborhood (north of Junction-ish).

It woke me up as well. The type of plane was a c206 with registration (N305DK).  It looked like it almost crashed into another plane at 1145pm as well.

Woke me up at 4 am near Charlestown hill.  Was flying low.

It’s amazing what you can  find  on line regarding flight records. The plane buzzing around West Seattle this early morning (N305DK) is registered to Washington State patrol and came up out of Olympia. Not sure why they were buzzing around and around West Seattle for so long early this morning, a bit disruptive. If you look at their flight records, they take a number of early morning flights for whatever reason.

Considering the location it was circling, probably related to rock throwing.

      • ML July 21, 2021 (3:49 pm)

It was also flying over West Seattle directly for quite some time, not shown in the screen shot above, but could be seen on the plane tracker. I could clearly see it while squinting on my phone in the wee hours of the morning and directly above me as I was trying to figure out why it kept buzzing directly over my house in High Point over and over and over and over and over.

The rock-throwing-related guess is correct, per WSP. Writing a separate blurb shortly.

The FAA tail number lookup shows that N305DK registered owner is the Washington State Patrol.  Note the above flight path shows it circling around I-90/I-5 area.

I have an inquiry out to WSP’s media folks, who are looking into it.

That floatplane was me.  Running late to catch my Alaska cruise and didn’t want any traffic delays.

Sorry, comment time is over.
