TRAFFIC ALERT: Olson Place crash

11:59 AM: Thanks to Collin for the photo and report: A crash and the resulting emergency response are blocking part of eastbound/northbound Olson Place on the approach to the 509 ramps. As Collin notes via text (206-293-6302), this area is particularly slippery when rain returns.

12:27 PM: The SFD response has closed out. We’re checking on injuries.

I just passed through there around 11:45 heading west. Five-car fender bender/minor pile-up just before the 509-N on-ramp. Didn’t look too serious and there were several emergency vehicles at the scene. Traffic was backed up nearly to 14th when I came through. Have to head back out to another appointment soon… Hoping it clears soon.

Drivers prove repeatedly, thanks to Collin’s faithful documentation, that they are incapable of handling the responsibility of driving safely on this particular stretch of road. It is time for more dramatic interventions. The city should reduce the lanes in this section of road to one in each direction, with no passing turn lane in the middle. This lane reduction will reduce speeds through the most effective method of all: road design. If this is too much for people to handle, then perhaps it is time to install two-foot tall speed humps every 250 feet. Another option would be mandatory confiscation of people’s vehicles if they speed on this road, perhaps getting a bicycle in exchange. Drivers continue to prove themselves unable to drive appropriately here. It is time to restrict their capabilities in drastic and compulsory ways.

Sorry, comment time is over.
