SUMMER: Two wading pools, one spraypark will be open in West Seattle this year

(WSB file photo, Lincoln Park wading pool)

The city has finally announced this year’s plan for wading pools and sprayparks. Here’s which ones in West Seattle will be open, and when. From the citywide announcement:

Seattle Parks and Recreation is opening wading pools and sprayparks this summer from Saturday, June 26 to Monday, September 6. In all, 15 locations around Seattle will be available seven days a week to provide fun, activity and relief for kids, parents, and guardians this year.

Wading pools operate when there is no rain in the day’s forecast and the air temperature is expected to be 70 degrees or higher. If unsure, you can call the Wading Pool Hotline for same-day updates at 206-684-7796. The recording is updated by mid to late morning each day.

Here’s a link to a map to see which wading pools or sprayparks are near you.

WADING POOLS that will be open from noon to 7 pm each day of the week:

Lincoln Park (8011 Fauntleroy Way SW)

Open from noon to 5:30 pm each day of the week:

Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW)

SPRAYPARKS that will be open from 11 am to 8 pm each day of the week:

Highland Park (1100 SW Cloverdale)

For the rules – and the list of wading pools/sprayparks that will be open off-peninsula – see the full announcement.

Why not Hiawatha? Those two will get so crowded.

  • Kyle June 9, 2021 (8:12 pm)

Why can’t they operate all their infrastructure? Isn’t it just turning the water on and off at the beginning and end of the day?

That’s how the sprayparks work but the wading pools require continuous staffing/monitoring.

For which we pay ample taxes. Including a parks levee that significantly increased parks funding recently. It is interesting that Hiawatha won’t open and the Admiral library was the last library in the area to reopen. The City sure doesn’t prioritize serving its residents equitably.

Actually it’s not. The Delridge library is still closed.

Yes! Thank you for this comment. It’s so frustrating.

@ws2013 I think you’re confusing the words equally and equitably.

The city said there’s a chlorine shortage and it can’t obtain enough chlorine to operate all the wading pools.

I’m with Alki resident Hiawatha should be open also.  The City could rotate which pools are open, one week Delridge the next week Hiawatha et al.

And Kyle I agree the City should open all of the pools but the Council is to busy spending money on other things.

If there’s one thing we know for sure is absolutely safe during a viral airborne pandemic where all children under 12 haven’t been vaccinated, it’s gathering close together in huge groups to splash around a common pool of water with no filtration system. /s

Maybe the sky will fall first and we won’t have to worry about it!

Highly chlorinated water, which they change during the day, outdoors. You bet my kids will be the first in there, buddy.

Time to switch to sprayparks if pools can’t be operated. The Delridge library still hasn’t opened, not even the bookdrop.Public school playgrounds are locked for public access, students not allowed on play equipment during school.  (At Lafayette) The biggest impact as always is on those that need those outlets the most!

I have moved to Ballard but maintain a property and interest in West Seattle. Always grateful for the great information I find on WSB. There is not a single wading pool open in our vicinity! Queen Anne, Fremont, Wallingford, Ballard, Greenlake neighborhoods don’t have a pool open near us at all. I’m just venting but ugh! I feel like at least with the library openings there was an effort to spread across the city and not leave full pockets with no coverage.

I’ll just continue to go to Lake Wilderness with my grandsons.

Why do they not ever include Hiawatha? There is more traffic for us to travel south with the bridge closure. In Addition to Hiawatha’s old playground, we can no longer use Lafayette’s playground anymore. Our play areas are so limited in this area. Hiawatha isn’t offering any camps for kids this summer. It’s so frustrating to feel like we don’t even have a community center in our area!

Is the delridge wading pool for public ?

    • WSB June 28, 2021 (2:47 pm)

Yes, two wading pools in West Seattle are open to the public, Delridge (by the community center, 4501 Delridge Way) and Lincoln Park (just northwest of the north parking lot, upper part of the park).

Sorry, comment time is over.
