More weeks of Yancy closed? This is an important bike route out of West Seattle. It means more weeks of shooting the dangerous downhill bike lane on Avalon or running with the bulls in the general traffic lane, plus at Spokane & Harbor making the super dangerous right onto the trail where drivers on Spokane pull forward to see if they can make a right on red.

      Aren’t they improving things?

Bill, I ride a lot too in that area and feel the same way. This construction is in my direct neighborhood and all the yahoos who are avoiding Avalon via Spokane St or Genesee normally use Yancy  and are all being funneled into our neighborhood and treating it like a Formula 1 track. I knew that this would be a 2 month + thing. It’s been approx a month now roughly. Typical Seattle….

After enduring the agonizingly long construction to accomplish the “re channelization” of Avalon Wy to provide safer bike lanes now cyclists are avoiding downhill Avalon Wy bike lane? Might I ask why the bike lane is dangerous?

D,I use the bike lane on Avalon very often. The whole stretch can be dangerous but, it’s all due to cars, nothing to do with the bike lane itself. At the 35th Ave intersection, lots of rush hour traffic and folks driving erratically will try to turn in front of you to get on Avalon. As you approach Genesse St by the golf course, part of the bike lane intersects with the right only lane which is used a lot again, especially during rush hour. Same thing with another right turn lane from Avalon to Yancy St. I guess what I’m trying to say is you have to keep your head on a swivel down that entire corridor. I have nearly been hit many many times and I have flashing LED lights front and rear plus bright clothing….if you have to ask, you should probably try riding your bike there during rush hour and see how you fare. Let us know how it goes for you. Cheers.

Yes, at least 3 reasons why that bike lane is dangerous to cyclists:

        1) Doesn’t get swept so trash, gravel, rocks, broken car parts, broken bottles tend to collect there– hazards to the cyclist.

        2) Delivery vehicles, moving vans, ride share cars, personal vehicles, postal service vehicles quite often park there in the bike lane blocking it completely, sometimes at a blind curve or where sightlines are restricted.

        3) Drivers entering or exiting driveway cuts jet in or out right in front of approaching cyclist.

        4) Motorists (or vehicle passengers) walk across the bike lane (or stand in it, or congregate in it, or place bags, boxes, furniture there) without checking for approaching cyclist.

        5) Where there is a right turn lane that cuts across the bike lane, motorists will race ahead of the cyclist, to hit their brakes after manuvering directly in front of the cyclist or otherwise challenge the cyclist by encroaching within inches.

At least one or more of these I encounter on a daily basis.
