WEST SEATTLE SCENE: Jump-rope team springs into spring

(WSB photos)

The first spring sunshine greeted the West City Rope Ninjas jump-rope team for their pop-up shows outside Alki Bathhouse this afternoon. We stopped by for part of the first one.

World-champion jumper René Bibaud coaches the team. (For a bit of video, see our Twitter feed.)

So happy to see the team together!  They rocked it!   Those kids have amazing resilience led by Coach Rene.  Most have been practicing virtually this past year and to see them come together so seamlessly as a team was heart warming!

In the wake of the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes, it’s disappointing to see “ninja” being culturally appropriated by a group of mostly white people.

The team name came from and represents “ a person highly skilled at an activity.” Our team is diverse and we consulted Asian friends when selecting our name with their blessing.
