FOLLOWUP: Construction starts soon for 35th/Graham signal and second phase of West Seattle Neighborhood Greenway

Four and a half years after 35th/Graham was mentioned as the potential site of a new signal, it’s about to become reality. SDOT announced today that work will start this month on Phase 2 of the West Seattle Greenway, including the pedestrian/bicycle signal at 35th/Graham. This phase goes from High Point to The Junction, from SW Graham to SW Edmunds, using 38th SW, SW Findlay, and 42nd SW (as first discussed in 2017). The map shows both phases:

The work at 35th and Graham will start seven years after the second of two deaths there, separated by seven years – pedestrian James St. Clair in December 2013 and bicyclist Susanne Scaringi in September 2007.

Really good news.  A signal at Graham will make it safe to cross 35th on foot or on bike on a street that is less steep and less busy than Morgan or the other nearby streets. This creates a good walking and bike route from High Point to the Junction.  Seven years since so many people gathered at High Point to honor the memory of James St. Clair and demand action.

Great news! It is always nice to see changes to the design of a road in order to keep vulnerable street users safe.  Hopefully in the future we will see even more changes that force people driving vehicles into better, safer driving, up to and including lane reductions and automated speed ticketing.

I was afraid this had been quietly cancelled.  This is overdue.

The city was last soliciting the public for feedback on the North Admiral Connection in April 2018.  Did that ever get converted into a defined route?  The 42nd street stretch through the Junction looked particularly tricky.  pdf from April 2018

Once again 35th and Juneau overlooked – there were two accidents in one day back in 2014, the motorcylist and pedestrian who died there in the following years – they put up the right turn only sign last which is ignored by 95% of drivers, and has never once been enforced.  Juneau, which is not an arterial, is used as the main arterial from 35th to Juneau – it carries probably 5X the traffic that Graham carries.  Just another across the board fail by our city planners – they are terrible at their jobs.

Sorry, comment time is over.
