GETTING AROUND: New maps, videos to help with bicycling around – and to/from – West Seattle

New to bicycling around the peninsula? Cascade Bicycle Club has a new set of maps and videos meant, according to the announcement, ” to help West Seattle residents impacted by the West Seattle Bridge closure more safely and confidently bicycle to downtown and throughout their community.” (Cascade also is advertising on WSB to help get the word out.) The featured routes:

West Seattle Junction to South Lake Union
White Center to downtown via the Spokane Street Bridge
Spokane Street Bridge Detour to 1st Avenue South Bridge
White Center to Georgetown loop

Cascade says those routes “encompass the most common commutes for West Seattle residents.” You can find the maps and more on this resource page that “also includes links to free resources designed to help bicyclists of all levels become confident riding on the streets, learn the rules of the road, and get a bike in road-ready shape.”

In case you’re missing the bridge, here’s a one-minute PSA from last September.https://youtu.be/A05pp5FB67o

As long as they keep ignoring West Seattle’s many elevation changes, thus implying that the entire area can be traversed on a skateboard, these bicycling destination maps are misleading and useless.

The maps do indicate uphill grades with the triple >>>.

West Seattle is incredibly bike-able.  It’s not hard to avoid the steeper hills.  I understand the pushback on the idea of bike commuting, but that doesn’t mean that West Seattle itself is somehow not bike-able.

Forest – Am I missing something? The links to the maps take you to a ridewithgps.com map that shows the elevation and grade of the route on the bottom of the page.  How’s that ignoring the elevation changes?  Or are you talking about the promotional poster image they’re using for this?  If so, then I have some complaints about the size representation of the seagulls and orcas!

There’s a bike route from the ID to Georgetown? That’s news to me. Do they mean the sidewalk?

  • Trickycoolj September 16, 2020 (7:45 pm)

Except High Point or Westwood Village apparently.

Thank you Cascade for joining the effort to cope with the bridge  closure.

TrickycoolJ, we’ve got routes from High Point on the West Seattle Bike Connections website Resources page (Cascade’s page links to it, too). We just did a custom map for someone commuting from Fremont to Westwood.  Joe Z, Here’s a route from West Seattle to ID and from there to Georgetown. Here is another way, using 12th and the Jose Rizal Bridge. These are on the WSBC Resources page.

Commuting by bike from HIghpoint to First Hill, you still have a hill (snakepit) that is like .4 miles, which can feel like double the amount when biking or walking, particularly when returning after a day of work.  There’s no way to get around a hill if commuting to and from Highpoint.

Yes, Highpoint the highest point in the city. Easier to ride to the top of Queen Anne.

Part of West Seattle being bike friendly is safety.  I have close calls with passing cars almost every time I ride.  Please watch out for bicycles and give them at least three feet when you pass them.  You will definitely be late for wherever it is you are in a such a hurry to get to if you kill a cyclist with your car.

  • What are they really saying? September 17, 2020 (5:29 pm)

I was amused to see that all of the arrows point OUT OF WEST SEATTLE.  How subliminal.

Sorry, comment time is over.
