UPDATE: Evening March protesters in West Seattle again

8:53 PM: The protest group that’s been in West Seattle multiple recent nights, taking the Evening March to elected officials’ homes, is in the area again tonight, this time gathering at and heading out from Westwood Village. They have at least one streamer with them, so you should be able to watch the Seattle Protest Network stream.

9:16 PM: The group is now northbound on Delridge Way.

9:37 PM: The group is approaching the Southwest Precinct. In the nearby residential neighborhoods, their chanting focused on gentrification.

9:50 PM: They’ve gathered outside the precinct, in the plaza … writing on the pavement. The leaders told supporters not to damage anything. You’ll recall the precinct’s windows were boarded up weeks ago; the boards have since been painted black.

10:30 PM: Chalked messages cover the window boards by the precinct’s public entrance; streamers are showing some of them, including the names of people killed by police. They’re also spelling SUMMER in flower petals and tealight candles, after Summer Taylor, a group member killed during a protest earlier this summer. (added) The previous stream link has moved on to Portland, so if you’re interested in the Southwest Precinct demonstration, it’s still on ConcreteReporting.com.

11:15 PM: The group is leaving the precinct.

Thanks for invalidating an entire movement focused on trying to make the world a better place!

      • Sail August 19, 2020 (8:45 am)

They are actually playing a very large part in not making the city a better place.  The original movement for blm was truly a legit cause.  Now this is simply disruptive and destructive.

“writing on the pavement” you mean graffiti?!

    • Colby August 19, 2020 (12:17 am)

It’s called “sidewalk chalk.” A tool used by radicalized 5 year olds and sidewalk sale enthusiasts.

Colby wins ‘Best WSB Comment of the Day.”

Writing on the building so now we’ve moved to straight vandalism

    • Jb August 18, 2020 (10:54 pm)

It’s chalk. You can stand down.

      • John August 19, 2020 (4:15 am)

So?! It’s still vandalism and they did it all over the walls and window coverings of the building. That now has to be cleaned at taxpayer expense

        • karma llama August 19, 2020 (3:22 pm)

It’s chalk. Haven’t seen any photos of the building, but if exposed to the rain, it might wash away after this weeks forecasted rainfall. Not sure we can consider something so impermanent actual vandalism.

You know what else costs taxpayers?… Police being paid on administrative leave while being investigated for misconduct or brutality of people of color. Why aren’t you expressing outrage over that, rather than some chalk graffiti?

          • WSB August 19, 2020 (3:39 pm)

Our photographer wemt over to look this morning and much of it already had been erased/cleaned.

Chalk. You know, the thing teachers use

Do something useful and remove the paint all over town that says defund police 50% and replace it with chalk.

Wow, the folks here up in frickin’ arms because a group of people are walking down the street and writing in chalk, because people have died needlessly? It “has to stop”? Listen to yourselves.

  • Smittytheclown August 18, 2020 (11:22 pm)

As a media outlet it is your responsibility to give us an estimated crowd size.  This is important information.  Please do your job.

    • WSB August 18, 2020 (11:36 pm)

No, actually, crowd estimates are a fool’s game. But since you ask, I’ll be a fool since the night’s nowhere near over …tonight I would estimate ~50 counting the support crew.

    • Plf August 19, 2020 (12:51 am)

      Smitty
WOW….you are joking right?”please do your job” If you are not  joking, It’s Pretty darn rude

      • Smittytheclown August 19, 2020 (3:49 am)

Not at all.  We are fortunate to have WSB.  They do incredible work.  While crowd size estimates are a “fools game” when it comes to huge demonstrations (or inaugurations) it’s important for context when mobs are marching.  It’s also a way to track momentum.  Two months ago these marches may have involved 250 people…but we will never know.  Again, WSB is incredible.  Just found it interesting that this context was not offered.

        • WSB August 19, 2020 (9:33 am)

The marches and protests involve different core groups with different followings. Since the Every Day Msrch’s Evening March has been over here seven times, in both watching the protests and trying to find the announcements in advance so we are not caught by surprise, we have learned a tiny bit about
how this one particular nightly (they took last weekend off) group works. Re: size, over those seven events, it’s seemed relatively consistent.

        • Plf August 19, 2020 (11:03 am)

Smittyyou might get further by asking versus comments like “do your job”. Might not been your intent but you come across as rude, entitled.  Glad you have respect for WSB though the tone of your comment one would never have known

I’ve  asked before and it didn’t get published, let alone answered.  Thought maybe a little dig might help.  I feel it’s a very important piece of info.  WSB is fantastic and we are fortunate to have them.  I retract the tone, but not the question.

  • Omg August 18, 2020 (11:28 pm)

What else do they want the city to provide? The police are on their way to be defunded. Bleed a turnip? The police did not cause her death. We already didn’t have enough officers to deal with protesters on the freeway let alone stop the a-hole that ran into her. Didn’t he go to jail? My understanding is they put up barricades to keep cars off freeway? Maybe I’m wrong? If you want something done, run for office. Just curious, because I seriously don’t know. How many people were killed in Seattle recently due to excessive force by the police department under Carmen Best? And also if someone threw fireworks or rocks or bottles at you or your family members, how would you react? I personally would protect my family. If it came from a crowd? I’d fight like hell. Imagine how the family members of the two young boys felt when they died at a protest by other protesters at chop. So sad.

    • Jay August 19, 2020 (9:00 am)

In the context of your example, I won’t argue the point about you and your family defending yourselves in the moment but I feel it’s important to remind you that while you and your family may have taken issue with the crowd that had every right to be there, the reason you were eventually attacked was because when you started to engage with that crowd in full armor you did things like pepper spray a child while her parents were yelling at you and then you tried to gas out the crown. You can’t claim to be a victim if you show up for a fight and then start one.

      • Omg August 20, 2020 (11:38 am)

Jay yup I would totally pepper spray anyone. Zero F’s given.

    • Community Member August 19, 2020 (3:40 pm)

The police did not cause her death.”  – and yet the KC sheriff deputy joked about it on twitter, and at least one SPS 911 dispatcher liked the tweet. So, yeah, some community members do still find reason to protest our police.

        Please share

  • Sunshine August 18, 2020 (11:42 pm)

I was going to join in until I heard her say, “Black people used to live here. Vacate.” Uhh, my street is at least 90% black. I appreciate what everyone is doing & the intention is there. That being said, do some research on who lives on these streets before you tell us to vacate.

    • Neighbor August 19, 2020 (9:25 am)

While I understand the real and legitimate issues that come with gentrification, I don’t understand this. It would make more sense to tell the newer arrivals to a neighborhood to support the area’s minority-owned small businesses so they can stay and thrive. Wouldn’t telling the newer arrivals to “vacate” simply bring back the redlining we’re trying to get away from?

      • karma llama August 19, 2020 (3:31 pm)

Right, let’s continue to tell marginalized and oppressed groups of people ‘what would make more sense’ in our opinion, for them to say and how to communicate their anger and feelings.

        • Neighbor August 20, 2020 (7:00 am)

I’m not telling anyone how to express anything. I’m asking a question in an attempt to understand what this person or group was actually asking for as their preferred outcome. But since you chose to throw shade I will give *you* my opinion- snarking at people who are trying to learn and help is a great way to alienate allies.

          • karma llama August 20, 2020 (5:32 pm)

‘It would make more sense to tell the newer arrivals to a neighborhood to support the area’s minority-owned small businesses so they can stay and thrive.’

This statement sounds like you were telling others what would make more sense.

Being a focused ally and directly calling attention to issues (such as white fragility), is not the same as ‘throwing shade and snarking at people.’ There is focused purpose of trying to help people become more aware of their unconscious biases, racial roles, and contributions to systemic racism.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a perfectly easy and nice way to get through these issues, without many white folks facing and experiencing some difficult feelings and processing a lot that they haven’t yet.

I know it’s uncomfortable, and wish you the best in continuing to listen and trying to learn. Self compassion, we’re all at a different place with our awareness and learning.

          • karma llama August 20, 2020 (5:42 pm)

… also my reply wasn’t just to your comment, but to ALL comments of similar orientation, of having some complaint or instructiveness towards protestors, especially in regards to what people of color are voicing right now.

Hope you can see the larger point I was making.

    • Gable August 19, 2020 (2:27 pm)

The Duwamish tribe lived there originally. Seems like they should have first dibs on any housing if someone is going to vacate. People really need to do their homework.

  • LongTimeAlkiResident August 19, 2020 (6:27 am)

Enough violent protests, but this was NOT one.  Enough destruction by protests, and this was not one.  Just as I want the police to stop killing POC, I want protesters to stop injuring police.  I think rather than defunding the police, we need more police officers and better training. In my world, when an officer does not perform in accord with citizen policing policies, they should suffer the ramifications and be held accountable, which they have not been. I am losing support for the protesting given the destruction that is occurring with many of the events, but last night sounds like it was peaceful. The message seems to be evolving, and that worries me. If nightly protests occur (even peaceful ones), the message loses its effectiveness  in my mind.

  • WTF August 19, 2020 (7:59 am)

This group has had some very valid conversations with city (leaders); term used loosely here. However, they continue to stray off message, are becoming unfocused and ineffective. When you only choose to rant about the system instead of work, and I mean work, to help make impacting change, nothing will happen. This group doesn’t intend to work at it and people are getting weary of them. If they, and other groups, don’t start planning to the “then what” nothing will change. Change is a progressional process and demanding and shaming and vandalizing and veering and disrespecting and… the cause will slow to a dull thud. I for one, would love to see them have a table at the Sunday Market. Be able to politely and with strength of maturity, have conversations with people walking the market…of whom most are white. How about propose not demand, starting a junior (volunteer) city council program where they and kids like them learn how municipalities are run,, participate in some decision making processes, and educate the (old folks) ;) on what the street and young people are thinking. That’s working the system from the inside! John Lewis is an excellent example of that. We all recognize the need. We all just don’t agree with the tactics. The very diverging, oppositional tactics.

    • karma llama August 19, 2020 (3:44 pm)

‘Be able to politely and with strength of maturity, have conversations with people’

I think you should consider black history in our country, and then reconsider your comment.  All things considered, I think there has been plenty of politeness and maturity around social justice issues and protesting.

Sounds like you mean communicate in a way that you approve of and that would make you more comfortable. Your whole example of setting up a table at a farmers market and communicating that way… sounds like more white fragility to me.

Black and brown protestors, keep on using your voice how it feels right to you. ✊🏼

And white folks, instead of sitting back and criticizing and suggesting what people of color can do to appease you better, how about you find ways to get involved and actually be supportive.

  • Planno August 19, 2020 (8:51 am)

Who knew West Seattle was so full of faux-progressives with lots of excuses for why they support BLM, but just not in their neighborhood, and only in a way that doesn’t make them feel uncomfortable. You are part of the white supremacist system and until you are actively anti-racist, you will continue to be a barrier to real change. Do the hard work to acknowledge this or move out of the way. Next time you have a gut reaction ask your self, why am I so triggered?

    • Leon August 19, 2020 (9:39 am)

You seem so angry. Perhaps that’s what people are most tired of.

    • John seanean August 19, 2020 (9:41 am)

called Latte Liberals and there are plenty of us :)

    • Ag August 19, 2020 (11:10 am)

I had a gut reaction to being woken up after finally falling asleep. That reaction was anger and frustration, since I haven’t gotten much sleep lately. The weather has been hot and most people are sleeping with their windows open. The procession was very loud. After that initial gut reaction that had nothing to do with the movement, I realized what was going on and my partner and I joined the event. We got a chance to talk with folks and be present for a show of support. I don’t agree with the negative sentiment a lot of people on this comment section are stating. People just need to get over themselves, this movement is greater than any one person.

    • l August 19, 2020 (11:27 am)

The rhetoric people use in this conversation is just unbelievable.  The “white supremacist system”?   Did we not elect a Black President for 8 years?   Did we not just have a Black Police Chief (who was driven out by a City Council who supposedly supports the Black Lives Matter movement?)    Are Barack Obama and Chief Betts not part of the system somehow?   Unfortunately racial bias still exists in America, but I would argue that the situation is much better than it was 50 years or even 10 years ago.   We can do better, but to use such rhetoric misrepresents the situation to put it kindly.

    • SamD August 19, 2020 (11:42 am)

Supporting BLM does not mean you have to agree with their tactics or hate police. Real change takes cooperation, planning, and work. These BLM supporters are the ones getting triggered when you tell them their demands can’t be met immediately.

    • wscommuter August 19, 2020 (2:37 pm)

@ Planno … ahhh,  the simple beauty of being a zealot.  “You are part of the white supremacist system …”.   Such moral clarity to be able to decide who is/isn’t on the side of justice … the world being so perfectly black and white (pun not intended) to people like you.  Many, I daresay most here, support an end to racism … we support greater accountability for police officers (including prosecuting those who commit crimes like murder) … we support greater economic justice for POC  … and so on.  I know I do.  But I shake my head at folks who presume to decide that unless I see the world exactly the way you do, I am “part of the white supremacist system.”  Dating myself, but the lyrics to the Beatles “Revolution” come to mind.  You might try reading them sometime … and you might remember that these very difficult problems which should be addressed are unavoidably packed with shades of gray.  The sad irony is that by being so zealous and extreme, you give fodder to the very racists you so deplore.

      • Ag August 19, 2020 (10:18 pm)

Ok just FYI the poster stated that you’re part of the white supremacy system if you are not actively anti-racist. NOT “if you don’t see the world like they do.” That’s a big difference. Stop twisting their words and building a straw man to easily tear down. Germans who were not actively against the holocaust were part of Hitler’s nazi system through their complicit non-involvement. Speak to any German who is not a neo-nazi and they will share the shame of their complicit ancestors.

I grew up in High  Point  and have lived in my 100 year old house for 36 years. So now I am being told to vacate because I’m not black . Sounds like the protesters want to segregate neighborhoods after all the hard work that was done on the 70’s snd 80.s to integrate. Doesn’t make sense .

  • Zark00 August 19, 2020 (1:15 pm)

Haha love how the commenters saying “this is getting old”, “its losing steam” and “everyone is sick of it” literally think they’re speaking for everyone. News flash, that is YOUR opinion, and its wrong. You are sick of it because you dont care about it anymore. Nightly protests pretty much prove you are wrong. People are incredibly self cntered creatures. If you are complaining that protests about cops murdering people are annoying to you, your priorities are severly out of whack and your morals are questionable.

    • Gable August 19, 2020 (2:09 pm)

What’s really getting old is the exaggerated rhetoric.  We are in Seattle and our police are not “murdering” people.  “Defunding” is not fixing any problems here.  Reducing 100 officers without a solid plan is just creating new problems and doing nothing about the supposed goal of these protests.  Believe it or not, you need the police.

  • Mj August 19, 2020 (5:25 pm)

AMD yes City resources are limited and my point was – is spending money on Police OT to monitor the on going protesting the best use of this limited resources?  Yes in a idealized world the protest stay peaceful, but the world is not ideal.

  • sick of Robespierre August 20, 2020 (2:34 pm)

Black Lives Matter – Period !  How do we make change ?   Oh – let me see – there is only one way to do that – cut the police force in half, give the police management paycuts, and march all over neighborhoods late at night, making noise, marking everything up with crayons, and disrupting life.  Wow !  What an effective way to advocate for change.  How many more people are you going to alienate from what could be a legitimate movement ?  Are you recycling the French Revolution ?             Quit cramming your version of protest down our throats !  Many of us are Black Lives Matter supporters !  You are NOT effective with these tantrum late night marches.  You lose more supporters every day.  Grow up !

Sorry, comment time is over.
