UPDATE: Another West Seattle Junction power outage – 10+ hours this time

9:44 AM: More than 200 customers in the West Seattle Junction have lost electricity – the Seattle City Light outage map shows it as multiple outages, but they all started within the past half-hour. Thanks to Amy Lee Derenthal at the Senior Center of West Seattle (which is affected) for first word. Updates to come.

10:11 AM: We’re told via text that a few businesses north of SW Oregon – Lady Di and Greentree – are among those affected. This by the way is exactly a week after another Junction outage affected hundreds, lasting five hours for some.

11:30 AM: The outage is now shown at 419 customers, and “equipment failure” is attributed as the cause.

3:37 PM: We checked in with City Light, which hasn’t much to say: “We have a Seattle City Light crew currently on-site investigating the outage right now. They are trying to determine the root cause for the outage.”

5:59 PM: An update from SCL: “The crew is investigating both overhead and underground lines. They are still trying to determine the cause for the outage. The crew plans to restore power in sections in an effort to isolate where the outage is located. Depending on how extensive the problem is, it may take the crew more time to fully restore service.”

8:05 PM: SCL says everyone was back on as of about 15 minutes ago. Still awaiting word on the cause.

8:24 PM: SCL spokesperson Jenny Levesque tells WSB, “The outage was due to a limiter failure; it serves to limit current on the pole. The crew had to do testing to isolate and repair the issue.”

Heard a loud pop from the parking lot behind the senior center just around the time this was reported.

  • Junction 47 Resident July 28, 2020 (9:59 am)

It’s the complete reverse of last Tuesday’s outage. A week ago, power in my apartment was completely out except for my bathroom lights and an outlet on the far wall. Today, only that same outlet and my bathroom are the only things affected.

Agreed. It’s very sporadic where power is out in my apt, but I can’t access my internet when I was able to last week. And no word from the building manager about these outages?

Does your apartment have some sort of emergency power generator setup?  It’d be kind of unusual to have half an apartment go out, but pretty easy to have one of those newer arc fault circuit breakers sense unusual current flow and trip.

    • Paul Mockett July 28, 2020 (1:57 pm)

The reason different devices are out this time is because the outage is on a different 120v leg of your electrical service. In order to support 240v services, standard circuit breaker boxes have 2 legs at 120v each.  Devices such as std wall outlets or lights use 1 hot leg and 1 ground. Which things work depends on which hot leg they are connected to.

Did you just lose all power? I had some stuff working but now it’s all out.

  • Plf July 28, 2020 (10:37 am)

Our infrastructure just can’t absorb the increase density,

  • drm July 28, 2020 (10:54 am)

Have also lost internet and cable in North Admiral

  • Jennie July 28, 2020 (10:58 am)

Is this related?? Not cool Comcast! An XFINITY Internet outage has been reported in your area. We’re working hard to get your service up and running. The issue will be resolved 07/28/2020 02:49 PM (Pacific). Thank you for your patience.

  • Carole July 28, 2020 (11:02 am)

Comcast went down just about same time. California, north of Charleston. Comcast outage map shows big USA outage.

  • WHW July 28, 2020 (11:05 am)

We’re just north of the Junction (S of Charleston) and lost Comcast service just after this power outage. Not sure if related.

  • Camille Cage July 28, 2020 (11:07 am)

37th Ave SW and Genesee Internet is down.

  • LK July 28, 2020 (11:08 am)

Comcast internet is down here at 46th and Genesee for the last 20 mins or so.

  • Lajwestseattle July 28, 2020 (11:09 am)

Also…there’s an xfinity outage affecting 2,500 customers according to their website. Not sure if it’s related to this.

  • Avalon Resident July 28, 2020 (11:13 am)

There also seems to be a pretty widespread Comcast outage in West Seattle. My internet is out (at Avalon & Genessee), as is a friend’s who lives all the way down in Highland Park.

    • WSB July 28, 2020 (11:23 am)

On it! We’ve been out for a while so I don’t know yet if we are affected in Upper Fauntleroy but lots of areas reported it!

  • Midi July 28, 2020 (11:21 am)

Network and TV outage in High Point – related?

  • AMD July 28, 2020 (11:23 am)

There seems to be an outage with Comcast as well.  Is it related?

  • CAM July 28, 2020 (12:41 pm)

I just tried to order Coastline and they aren’t accepting orders online or answering the phone and then realized this was probably why…

  • Another another J47 Resident July 28, 2020 (1:33 pm)

Is there any estimated time that the power will be back on?

  • J47 Resident July 28, 2020 (5:01 pm)

Now it appears all power is out at Junction 47.

  • JM July 28, 2020 (5:21 pm)

It’s now 5:20pm and still no power at the Junction 47 complex.  Any updates from the city or knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

    • WSB July 28, 2020 (5:59 pm)

Adding an update. They still hadn’t found the cause but are trying to isolate it… adding above.

  • And another AJ Resident July 28, 2020 (5:28 pm)

I had some power and now it’s all out. On a far more serious issue… how can it be UpTo Code for an apartment building to have ZERO emergency lighting in the stairwells??? I can’t even imagine what would happen if there was a fire!

  • Isaac July 28, 2020 (5:29 pm)

Crew is working now behind Shadowland. I had partial power in my apartment at AJ Apartments, and now full loss of power due to the work here.

    • Yet another J47 Resident July 28, 2020 (6:20 pm)

Thanks for sharing. We also had partial power at J47 but now it’s completely gone. Our backup generator also failed. Good times!

  • West Seattle Islander July 28, 2020 (5:29 pm)

How many SCL employees does it take to screw in a light bulb? Going on 8 hours with no power. That makes it 13 hours and counting with no power in the last 7 days.

  • Rob July 28, 2020 (5:34 pm)

Yep. There were three SCL utility trucks in the alley behind junction park along with 3 service trucks and a boom lift. They left right before ALL power went down. Interesting

  • Eagles Watch July 28, 2020 (6:32 pm)

    Back on duty

  • John July 28, 2020 (7:06 pm)

Just laughable. As yet another Junction 47 resident, it’s mindblowing at how cheap these big corporations are. This building has zero backup power of any kind, and apparently that should been thought of when you’re served by a utility company that quite literally is incompetent at keeping the lights on.The city gets a big fat F, again. Don’t even get me started on the bridge…

  • Junction 47 Resident July 28, 2020 (7:16 pm)

I’m pretty sure it’s literally just the Junction 47 buildings now. Finally gave up and left to pick up some dinner and in the couple minutes I was out, the hallways and stairwells went totally pitch black. SCL site still shows 6pm and it’s 7:15 now. I really want to know what the cause was if/when this gets resolved.

  • Doug July 28, 2020 (7:16 pm)

Multiple restaurants in the Junction were unable to open tonight. This is just shameful in a time when they need every second to survive. It’s not like we are in the middle of a blizzard. What is possibly taking so long??

  • WSB July 28, 2020 (8:26 pm)

    Updated with the cause.

Sorry, comment time is over.
