TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Friday notes; 11th week of West Seattle Bridge closure

6:03 AM: Good morning – the 74th morning without the high-rise West Seattle Bridge. As usual, we start by checking the cameras for the 5-way intersection, and the restricted-access low bridge just east of it:

The main detour route across the Duwamish River is the 1st Avenue South Bridge (map) – here’s that camera:

The other major bridge across the river is the South Park Bridge (map) – this camera shows the SP-side approach:

Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed for info about any of those bridges opening for marine traffic.

You can see all local traffic cams here; locally relevant cameras are also shown on this WSB page.

6:34am and no traffic cops monitoring the lower bridge (per camera). I thought this time of day was considered rush hour? Just sayin’…And yes, the traffic cops aren’t part of the protest enforcement.

That msy have changed, as I heard the T units referred to on the scanner yesterday.

I’ve been across the low bridge a couple of times-after 11pm and no, I didn’t impede any freight, bus or emergency vehicle. My observation is that if there are cars on the low bridge there’s PLENTY  of room for emergency vehicles to get through down the middle of the road. If there are busses or semi’s it would be a TIGHT fit to get a fire truck through.

got passed by 5 times by the 120 today, 6th time I gave up. So is this metro’s plan then? “We’ll get you there!” SOMETIME

Wait, were you in a car, getting passed by the 120 5 times (which is actually really good as far as bus riding goes) ?!?!? Or standing at a bus stop – not getting picked up, and passed over 5 times?   Either way, that is astonishing. Hopefully bus protocol can change in Phase 1.5 also and carry more passengers.

There’s a roadside protest on 35th by Providence St. Vincent. I also saw what looks to be a German shepherd stuck under a bus on Avalon by the storage place. Weird commute to work today.

Yes, we previewed the protest yesterday. Just took pics. Hadn’t heard about the dog -we’re about to head that way so will check.

ws coug. SPD’s got all their traffic units downtown with the protests going on.

The big push in Seattle, including a couple of Seattle council person’s is to defund the police, now some are calling for them to watch the low birdge?  Thank goodness most are not aboard at this time with the minority wanting this to happen.  But cutting loose the SPD traffic divisions would be the first things in my small mind to go!  Let people police themselves, right?

@Dunno: Sure, what could go wrong with 70 mph on 35th or West Marginal?

      • Dunno June 5, 2020 (6:52 pm)

Defund the police now!  Right on Bill. You can catch em with your E-Bike!

Probably better to focus attention on city leader working/not working on the high bridge rather than anger at your fellow citizens trying to use the low bridge as a reasonable work-around due to the failure of the high bridge maintenance? Being angry at regular people just trying to get over the river seems odd to me. Work on improving yourself and the high bridge instead of controlling your neighbors behavior maybe?

Sorry, comment time is over.
