John included in his note, “At first I thought the shapes were sea lions or seals on top of the gravel pile on the barge, but I realized they were people (kayakers) just hanging out when I used my telephoto.”

  A couple of friends and I did the same thing a couple summers ago, actually visited two barges that day.

I watched them for about 10 minutes while I was taking their picture with the sunshine coming and going. They were behaving themselves and were having some animated conversations with lots of smiles on their faces. At full resolution you can clearly identify who they are – looked like high school age boys or very early 20-somethings. Have taken lots of pictures around Elliot bay over the last 20 years and haven’t seen this one before.

The folks on the barge are enjoying one of the only places in the city you can speak without being recorded. The other is inside the overflow pipe deep under the sculpture park but it’s inaccessible to those without a death wish. Must have been a pretty important conversation. Ha!
