Police clear drivers from Constellation Park, for now

After multiple reports that Beach Drive by Constellation Park was clogged with driver groups that police were trying to clear, we went over to check. Only the police remained. But we heard other dispatches before – and after – about driver groups along Alki, as well as speeding on the West Seattle Bridge. One resident sent us a note about the same time we found the officers, saying, “It gets bad around here in the summer but this week has been really bad … feels like we are at a racetrack.”

I noticed that I heard a lot fewer modified mufflers from my townhouse today.  Yesterday was really bad with all the cars speeding up and down California.

    What are “driver groups”?

    • Miles March 22, 2020 (6:56 pm)

      Groups of drivers, silly 🤪

    • M.B. March 23, 2020 (6:11 am)

      Think young adults cruising.

  • dsa March 22, 2020 (6:55 pm)

Schools are out, the parks etc. are mostly closed, the weather is nice and they have cars.   It is understandable to me.

  • Jort March 22, 2020 (7:37 pm)

Gee, it’s such a bummer to have the cops shutting down the opportunity for “fart cars” to rip a** all over our neighborhoods. Every personal automobile that exceeds the speed limit by more than 30 mph, or which makes extremely disruptive loud noises on purpose, should be immediately taken in for permanent confiscation and crushing in an industrial car crusher, zero tolerance policy. Just gone and crushed. In exchange, fart car enthusiasts can get a free bicycle and Orca card.

Jort! Long time no hear. I was worried.

Keep releasing that hate, don’t want you to get sick.  Don’t bottle it up.   Jort.

I agree, the first private car to be crushed can be your 1987 Plymouth Reliant. Enjoy your bus pass

For those of us down here (that’s my street!!!), it was an hour of pure hell.  Everyone is jittery and anxious already, and the squealing, shrieking, blasting (there’s some new modification that makes the car sound like firecrackers) the torturous. I was panic-stricken for anyone who was out taking a walk/run/bike ride.  I know there’s a lot of pent-up energy and frustration with all the lifestyle changes from the virus, but the danger element from this was sky-high.

    • Jeremy Koa March 23, 2020 (6:48 pm)

The only thing dangerous is you with that mentality, cars that are modified are not “extremely dangerous”.

  • Bill March 22, 2020 (8:26 pm)

Thank you, Seattle Police! How about the City of Seattle installing some more speed bumps?

  • Seaweed March 22, 2020 (8:40 pm)

     little boy racers

  • Chris March 22, 2020 (9:03 pm)

Thank you to the police.   We have been hearing these racers seems for the last few days.   We were concerned for pedestrians crossing the street, or side streets.    Thank you.   Hopefully cooler weather and rain will send them inside.

What a bunch of idiots… on many levels! First, a congregation of 30+ teenagers when we have limited congregations. Social distancing anyone? Second, loud obnoxious cars, burning rubber on a residential street. Good thing the police showed up and dispersed the crowd.

  • 1994 March 22, 2020 (9:51 pm)

Not just the noisy cars, the motorbikes with their amplified engines are pure hell on the senses of all living things.

  • 22blades March 23, 2020 (3:34 am)

    Pray for rain…

  • Bradley March 23, 2020 (5:00 am)

Oh, those youngsters with their wheel, their weed, and their fire. They’ll be back like a boomerang on the next sunny weekend. Brace yourselves.

  • airwolf March 23, 2020 (7:20 am)

Whatever happened to the noise policy passed last year? i think WSB covered it.

  • Bronson March 23, 2020 (7:35 am)

It boggles the mind why SPD doesn’t just set up just over the top of the eastbound bridge on the weekends at about 5pm and catch inordinate amount of racers. It’s like clockwork. I live above the bridge in PP and the amount of insanity I witness from the aforementioned “fart cars,” motorcycles, and others is ridiculous. I keep waiting for a massive Daytona-500 like pile-up caused by one of these idiots.

My husband and I had to bring something to his folks as they cannot go out and get stuff for themselves anymore.  We brought them stuff about 3 PM yesterday in N Admiral where they live.  We decided to come home around Alki as we live towards the top of Jacobson road.  We went down to Calif. Ave to Harbor Ave.  You could not turn left to get out there as there was so many cars coming from the WS Freeway down to Alki.  We turned right and decided to go up Avalon.  Every car was turning left to get on the WS Bridge.  We were the only car on Avalon when we went home.  STAY HOME PEOPLE UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO GO OUT. Thank you.

  • Joan March 23, 2020 (9:59 am)

I drove over the bridge yesterday and noticed a lot of cars going way too fast and driving more recklessly. I thought people seemed to be speeding even more now too. I guess the lack of traffic just creates the raceway.

  • Yep March 23, 2020 (11:06 am)

My boyfriend and I were coming back in separate cars from the eastside around 2pm. Crossing the I90 bridge west bound around 8 low riding sports cars going 90-100mph in car pool lane blew by. Everyone hit their brakes and just before entering the Mt Baker tunnel one the cars blew their engine out. The entire tunnel was full of thick smoke. We had to hit the brakes with hazard lights on to get through because you couldn’t even see a foot in front of the car. Made it out ok to see the one jerk stalled on the Rainier Ave north exit. Cops were called. As I merged on I5 heading for home in W Seattle, four more idiots speeding blew by taking the w seattle exit and headed to Alki. I’m so sick of this crap.

Boredom, extra time, and tiny brains are never a good combination.

  • 3M March 23, 2020 (1:19 pm)

Yesterday on Beach Drive:Burnouts,  extremely loud engines, gridlock,  no social distancing, physical threats, intimidation of others wanting to use the park and sidewalk.  It required more three police cars to break it up.  The City of Seattle needs to have a dedicated  police presence on the Beach  – like it did for 30 plus years until the last few years.  The lack of civic oversight at the Beach consistently leads to gatherings getting out of hand, endangering  people.  This was like a riot yesterday.

  • Brian Hughes March 23, 2020 (1:45 pm)

Rode my bike through there yesterday and was amazed at the traffic. They should close that area to local traffic only.

  • Dom March 23, 2020 (3:42 pm)

I live my life a quarter mile at a time.
