WEST SEATTLE SNOW: More falls, for a little while

1:57 PM: That’s what Southwest Athletic Complex looked like this morning – one of the places in West Seattle where light snow from earlier this week is lingering. And you might notice a little more on the ground in your neighborhood when you return home tonight – light snow is falling right now and the National Weather Service expects showers to continue for a while:

No new alerts so far.

2:26 PM: Half an hour later, still snowing, heavily at times.

2:52 PM: And it’s all but over for now. Some stuck to side streets, though – Heather tweeted this photo from North Admiral:

The temperature’s still above freezing, though. SDOT‘s back out on the arterials just in case.

4:34 PM UPDATE: We just took a trip around the peninsula – roads are fine, no further precip.

This is hilarious. It’s snowing harder in my neighborhood right now than it has all week–and accumulating more.

    • WSB January 15, 2020 (2:25 pm)

It intensified here too. Going to have to change the headline!

  • Lisa January 15, 2020 (2:28 pm)

Indeed. It’s snowing harder and sticking more than it has all week. 36th and Dakota.

    Last gasp this snow round!

  • Gatewood January 15, 2020 (2:34 pm)

Suddenly snowed in near Highpoint. News says it’s supposed to be about 40 out there. Wish I had an outdoor thermometer.

Snow is sticking on side streets around 35th and Holden. Less so in White Center, but it’s still coming down over here.

I feel like we’re finally getting the snow I was expecting! Low/moderate wind too.

  • debbie gallagher January 15, 2020 (2:40 pm)

What’s hilarious is that my weather app says its light rain. I guess I can’t believe my eyes.

  • Drew January 15, 2020 (2:44 pm)

    Finally! Shortlived, turning to rain…

Remember what happened on one of the first heavy snow days last year? Many people panicked and left early and it took hours to get home. Those who stuck around work as usual, sailed home in 20 minutes.  The benefit this year is that schools are already closed.

    • WSB January 15, 2020 (2:51 pm)

It has slowed WAY down so definitely don’t panic.

School “ticket”lights went off on a car going east on Roxbury by Holy Family I was going west looked to see if yellow blinking lights were flashing and they were not, malfunction???

    • Yma January 15, 2020 (6:16 pm)

@JWinWS I’m finding that comment a bit hard. Folks need to get home – for a variety of reasons. It’s not panicking. And – depending on where you work, it can take way longer than 20 minutes, even on a good day.

Just made it to SE Renton from White Center. Roxbury/Cloverdale was wet and not slippery. I took 99-S to I-5 to 405N. The snow stopped before South Park and both the freeways and what I could see of the side streets were bare pavement. No snow in Tukwila or Renton either.

anyone have any anecdotal reports of snow measurements up by northgate? when seattleschools make their decision to close orstart 2 hr late on these types of days, a lot of what gets considered in the early mornings includes how affected side streets and arterials are from up north near i graham all the way down south to rainier beach. driving around earlier today, west seattle seemed pretty clear but i’m not sure how things are up by shoreine.

Has this week’s weather changed Metro’s projected date for moving transit onto Columbia Street?

    • WSB January 15, 2020 (6:30 pm)

It’s an SDOT/Metro thing. Don’t know, won’t be able to ask SDOT until next week, still trying to get something simple out of them like “when is the 35th/Dawson light activating?” (estimate was 3 weeks, two months ago) and my answer is on snow delay …

      • Scott January 15, 2020 (8:35 pm)

I am starting to think light rail to West Seattle will start before they finish the 35th project.

  • flimflam January 15, 2020 (6:49 pm)

nope, lots of panic – normal commute time out of downtown/QA area at 3pm took 2x as long as normal as everyone freaked out over non-sticking flurries and ran home all at the same time. oy vey

Sorry, comment time is over.
