WEATHER/TRANSIT/TRAFFIC/MORE: West Seattle info for Monday am

(MONDAY SCHOOL INFO: Changes are ALL LISTED HERE)

5 AM: The few hours of snowfall we got overnight was heaviest in Alki/Admiral (as shown here); further south, some (like here in Upper Fauntleroy) got just a dusting. So effects vary widely. Here are our infolinks:

SCHOOL CHANGES: Listed here, including Seattle Public Schools‘ 2-hour delay
METRO CHANGES: None in our area right now, but here’s the systemwide list
SDOT WINTER WEATHER MAP: See treated/plowed streets here
SDOT TRAVELERS’ MAP: The map we regularly feature
OUR TRAFFIC CAMS PAGE: Cameras particularly relevant to WS and vicinity
FORECAST INFO: National Weather Service topline – advisory until 8 am

Got info? Text/call 206-293-6302. More updates throughout the morning.

7:07 AM: The forecast warned more showers are possible – and we’re seeing one right now.

7:51 AM: That’s over. Thanks to everyone sharing commute stories in comments – though much of our area is mostly unaffected, there are spillover effects from snowfall elsewhere. And though the current advisory is about to expire, the temperatures have dropped and are expected to stay cold all week.

11:50 AM: The Winter Weather Advisory alert has been extended until 10 tonight, with intermittent snow showers expected to continue.

I would love to see reader reports about road conditions. I teach on the east side and we have a two hour delay today, and I am debating the best time to leave and wondering how concerned I should be. I hardly have any snow here south of The Junction but my back deck is slick and icy.

I work in downtown Bellevue – 90 and Bellevue way were bare and wet. It’s just above freezing over here and spitting snow intermittently. Side roads, sidewalks and parking lots are slushy but I had no issues. With the school delays and lighter traffic it was the easiest commute since the holidays!

Thanks! I work at BHS and was planning on going in until they canceled. Stay safe out there.

Metro buses have chains on this morning so they can’t go over 30 mph.  Folks might want to catch a slightly earlier bus if they have the option.

  • newnative January 13, 2020 (7:21 am)

There are a lot of people at my bus stop and two cancelled buses at California and Admiral (56/57).

  • BW January 13, 2020 (7:35 am)

I took the 57 from Admiral, leaving Starbucks at 6:45am – the bus was on time (that’s unusual).  The bus was chained up, which made it slow, but Admiral Way and the bridge were bare and wet, no issues.  Downtown streets are fine – took a second bus from Madison to Seattle center – also came on time, also chained and slow.

  • Tim January 13, 2020 (7:40 am)

Roads are clear and wet, including admiral and the bridge.  Many staying home, so not much traffic.  You shouldn’t have any issues.

  • Elton January 13, 2020 (7:40 am)

The last 37 going to downtown this morning is either not running or more than 12 minutes late.

  • mrsB January 13, 2020 (7:50 am)

We’re right on the Alki/Admiral line and we’ve got about 2-3” or so of wet snow on the ground. Roads are clear.

Metro has a new text service for transit riders to get notified of route status and cancellations at your stop. It’s easy and the response is prompt.

Metro Transit Alert – Text your stop ID to 62550 or visit ‘Next Departures’ in Metro‘s trip planner for trip cancelations during snow.http://kingcounty.gov/depts/transportation/metro/text-departures.aspx

The 21 on 35th was actually a minute early.  Had to hustle to the stop to make it!  I think there were about 7 people on the bus, when it’s usually packed.  Looks like most people are either waiting to head in with their kids, or taking a little advantage of the dusting in the south end to sleep in.

My 21X was packed with people by the time it left Avalon for downtown.  Caught an earlier one than usual – 7:10am at Morgan – and it must be a case of people who usually take later buses deciding to get the earlier one.

Newnative: I call it the Metro Bus Surprise: Will my bus come? Will it stop? Will they tell me any of these answers? I say snow is a four letter word when it comes to Metro.

  • Seriously? January 13, 2020 (8:50 am)

Fairly steady snow in Admiral for approximately 20 or 30 minutes now. California Ave is bare and wet.

  • Matt P January 13, 2020 (10:03 am)

Just had some flurries for about 20 minutes down by Morgan Junction but roads are pretty clear.  Is trash pickup running today?  If so, recycling is much later than usual.

    • hj January 13, 2020 (11:03 am)

I saw trash trucks running down Edmunds this morning.

  • JeffK January 13, 2020 (11:12 am)

Kirkland is very slippery as of an 10:30am, I just returned from there. My front wheel drive Honda was struggling to get going from a stop. SR-520 was slushy in the ruts with snow sticking on the edges.

  • AliAlki January 13, 2020 (11:40 am)

Roads were fine at 9AM with just a few flurries in the air on my way from Alki to Redmond. Once I hit 148th and 40th in Bellevue though everything changed and roads were icy and snow packed.  Looking out now it seems okay but that could probably change pretty quick if it starts to snow again. Friendly reminder please clear the snow from your car!

  • Tsurly January 13, 2020 (11:56 am)

Easy bike ride downtown. Calmer than usual with what appeared to be fewer cars on the road.

  • Chasbo January 13, 2020 (12:30 pm)

Anyone know if Recycle is picking up today?

    • WSB January 13, 2020 (12:40 pm)

No effects to solid waste pickup anywhere in the city, per SPU in city midmorning update.

      • CHASBO January 13, 2020 (2:34 pm)

Recycle just picked up 2:30 PM much later than usual.  Usually like 8:00 AM.  Whew, tons of holiday packaging…

    • Matt P January 13, 2020 (1:34 pm)

Mine finally rolled through about 15 minutes ago – 4 hours later than usual.

Sorry, comment time is over.
