Woman injured at Oregon/42nd

8:16 PM: We didn’t catch it as an incident in progress, but we’ve received some questions about an incident at 42nd/Oregon around 7 pm, described by onlookers as an injured pedestrian. Followup information from police isn’t available – the scene was cleared before we arrived – but Seattle Fire tells us a woman in her 60s was taken to the hospital, assessed in stable condition when transported.

10:04 PM: The call coding on this has appeared on Tweets by Beat as “motor vehicle collision.”

If anyone has information about this woman – including her name and family/friend contacts – please call the police.

I hope that woman is ok. I’ve almost been hit twice by reckless drivers at that intersection myself. Every intersection on Oregon between Fauntleroy and California is terrible for pedestrians.

I’m a family friend of this woman and would like to speak to anyone that witnessed the accident or was there soon after. We really need information. The police/hospital have now identified her, but the family needs to know what really happened. Please contact me if you have ANY information, or know of anybody that could possibly have video surveillance footage of the accident. Thank you so much everybody that has helped by posting about this horrible situation. I keep hearing this intersection is bad. Does anyone know is the accident occurred in the crosswalk?

She was not just injured, she died.  Still waiting for a full description of what happened.

I am so sorry to hear that. What little we could deduce about the investigation after the fact did not indicate that her injuries were life-threatening – SPD didn’t bring out the TCI detectives and close the road for hours, for example. I can’t confirm a death without a name (via Harborview or the Medical Examiner) and all I have is the SPD incident # … if anyone who knows it would consider emailing us; I will not publish her name, would only use it to seek confirmation from the hospital/ME … westseattleblog@gmail.com

This would be the 4th senior pedestrian killed by a vehicle driver in West Seattle since July!  So sorry for friends and family of this woman. These tragedies should not be happening.

Let’s make sure that non-senior pedestrians are protected as well.

Jeff- I am so sorry for your loss and that of her family and friends. This accident happened outside our building and the fact that she had not been identified weighed heavily on our minds. We called the hospital to get a better description but they could only give a very general one and tried to get the word out through Reddit as media outlets could not post the story without confirmation from the hospital’s media team, and they were gone for the holiday is my understanding. For whatever it’s worth, please know that many folks tried to help. I hope others can step forward with the answers you seek. May she rest in peace.

Maggie – Thank you for being so kind. We are posting signs in the area asking people with any information or surveillance footage to please contact me. We are working with police but details have been hard to get. Any information we can get to only understand what actually happened would be so helpful for her loved ones. Just hearing the bits of information you have provided have helped. If you or anyone else you know that saw this accident could contact me it would be much appreciated. Thanks again Maggie. I can be contacted at 818-512-6608, or jeff.thurlow@gmail.com

HI Maggie – from what you saw, did this accident happen in front of the apartment building at 4545 42nd Ave SW, closer to Alaska St than to Oregon St? Records say 4505 42nd Ave SW which is by the intersection of 42nd Ave SW and Oregon St, but the official report is not out so details are still not totally clear. Was the car that hit her traveling north or south on 42nd Ave SW? If you could possibly help with figuring out any of these details it would help us understand more. Thank you very much for you help. Jeff

It’s a simple 2-lane intersection with a light. It should not be unsafe to cross there, except for bad driving.

    • KM December 2, 2019 (1:54 pm)

I agree. I frequently observe parked cars up to the crosswalks at this intersection. For drivers who don’t stop at the stop line and roll through crosswalks to take right turns on red lights, it’s a recipe for disaster. I understand that might not be what happened here, but I have seen a lot of close calls at this intersection due to drivers not stopping when/where they should + limited sight from people who parked to close to the intersection, or drivers who are only looking for oncoming traffic to take their rights on red, rather than for the pedestrians who have the ROW.

Many seniors are slower than younger pedestrians.

  • Anonymous December 2, 2019 (2:33 pm)

I’m wondering whether the accident happened nearer to 4545 42nd Ave SW than to the corner of 42/Oregon. My neighbors are telling me that it was closer to here than there.

  • Ari E Yoder December 2, 2019 (4:25 pm)

It was not at the intersection.  She was jaywalking to get to QFC.  Wish a detailed story would come out.  Many of us are waiting.. She was a Korean woman named Jin Kim, but she went by Kimberly.

  • Claudia December 7, 2019 (9:38 pm)

Hi Ari- She was not going to QFC as she was not carrying her wallet or any cash. Please tell me the exact address of where this occurred if you saw it.

Sorry, comment time is over.
