ELECTION 2019: Third round of results; Herbold lead over Tavel widens

checkbox.jpg3:35 PM: Just in – the third round of general-election results. For Seattle City Council District 1 (West Seattle/South Park):

Lisa Herbold – 13,330 – 53.53 %
Phil Tavel – 11,482 – 46.11 %

Herbold’s 1,800+-vote lead is up from about 700 votes yesterday, 500 votes on Tuesday. About 11,000 ballots remain to be counted in D-1. King County Elections plans to release two counts tomorrow, 4 and 8:30 pm.

3:49 PM: As for the other six City Council races, two notes: In D-3, Kshama Sawant has gained major ground on Egan Orion, now fewer than 800 votes and three percentage points behind; in D-7, Andrew Lewis has pulled ahead of Jim Pugel, by 300+ votes. Statewide, Referendum 88 is still losing (but narrowly); I-976 is still passing.

    Logic is prevailing late!

More accurate statement would be idiocy is prevailing late

      • David November 7, 2019 (5:11 pm)

How so? Herbold is a consummate  professional. The bitterness towards her is way out of bounds.

        • Kc November 7, 2019 (8:15 pm)

So much for cleaning house the cancer has to go

          • Jort November 7, 2019 (10:01 pm)

Calling your political opponents “cancer” sure will win a lot of voters over! Keep up that awesome political strategy there, buddy! “Everyone who doesn’t vote my way is an IDIOT!” Super good campaigning there. Great ideas.

          • Jort November 8, 2019 (9:34 am)

Referring to your political opponent as a “cancer?” Nothing sinister or dehumanizing about that, at all!

  • HTB November 7, 2019 (4:28 pm)

I seriously do not understand what is wrong with this city. If the council is allowed to pursue its policies, everyone successful will simply follow Amazon and move to Bellevue. We’ll be left a city of poor people and government workers/

    • WSB November 7, 2019 (4:43 pm)

Amazon is not moving to Bellevue. As noted in an earlier thread:

Got it. This city was an impoverished mess before Bezos. We should all thank him for making Seattle so glorious.  You might not sense the sarcasm, but rest assured it is sarcasm. Seattle was a great place to live and is–if anything–a little less so now due to Amazon. However, it’s still great.

      • Irwin Fletcher November 7, 2019 (6:34 pm)

Nothing more disgusting than bringing a ton of high paying jobs to the city, building a homeless shelter, and donating millions to efforts to combat homelessness.

        • Peter November 7, 2019 (6:49 pm)

          I know! The nerve …

        • KM November 7, 2019 (6:50 pm)

I grew up in ag and have never seen cherries picked as well as this.

    • Lagartija Nick November 7, 2019 (6:14 pm)

HTB – you guys just never give up do you? Even when presented with evidence to the contrary multiple times, you still try to beat that “Amazon is moving to Bellevue” dead horse. Give it up, your fevered dreams are not reality.

  • Andros November 7, 2019 (4:31 pm)

Pretty sure that race is settled now.

  • Jort November 7, 2019 (4:48 pm)

I hate to bring this up, but I was specifically asked by somebody named “Lisa Herbad” in a comment from the primary elections in August to “Talk to me in November, Jort.” This person promised, without qualification, that “Your socialist princess is going to lose.”  I was also told to “enjoy what you think is a victory today” because “us sane people will have the last laugh in November.” So, I guess … where’s the laughter? Not actually funny? No? Maybe making political predictions with total certainty is not a super good idea. Also, don’t accuse your opponents of liking “tents, RV’s and drugs” just because they disagree with you. I sincerely hope this relentlessly debated topic gets some clarifying direction: the voters of West Seattle have chosen what they want. It wasn’t the “Safe Seattle”/”Seattle Is Dying” garbage that was peddled. That lost.

    • David November 7, 2019 (5:19 pm)

Amen! The slime slung by Tavelites was truly repulsive. For the record: Herbold does not live in Northbend and she is not somehow ignoring crime.Funny how these brilliant Tavelites made her and not the police commissioner responsible for surges in crime. When I see all the Trumpian Hetbold hate in supposedly liberal Seattle, I understand exactly why he is president. The Tavelite talking points were all misogyny and hate. They can eat it and keep their placards so I know where not to shop.

      • Centrist November 7, 2019 (7:00 pm)

I would hardly call this a mandate or the district has spoken almost half of the district is voting against her.

  • Ivan Weiss November 7, 2019 (5:21 pm)

I am delighted to agree with Jort for once.

    • David November 7, 2019 (7:01 pm)

      Hi Ivan!

  • Chris Stripinis November 7, 2019 (6:16 pm)

This is all great news and should help send a signal that Amazon can’t just buy the City Council because it has a bunch of money.

    • Irwin Fletcher November 7, 2019 (7:30 pm)

The whole “Amazon trying to buy the election” is silly and overplayed. This counsel reversed itself on the head tax because the data was showing that, if it went to the ballot like the voters wanted, the resulting voter turnout would have worked against them. They took an action designed to prevent a larger than usual turn-out that would have put them out of office. Everyone wants to use the “all corporations are evil” narrative because it’s easier to argue that than actually think critically about the issue.

  • MJ November 7, 2019 (6:26 pm)

Seattle has moved way too far left.  Whatever happened to the pragmatic center left?  The homeless issue is a prime example of the far lefts failure, the City spends more and more money and the problem gets worse and worse.  It’s time to try other options including strict enforcement of existing laws.

    • Peter November 7, 2019 (6:55 pm)

The laws are enforced. Kolding lost in the primary, it’s OK to stop mindlessly parroting SPOG lies now.

      • Matt P November 8, 2019 (9:40 am)

The laws are selectively enforced because the police know most won’t be prosecuted – not their fault. It’s the prosecutors office’s fault that we have multiple – somtimes into the triple digits – repeat offenders on the street.

    • Mk November 7, 2019 (6:56 pm)

I agree and Herbold is a part of the mess either because of her politics or because she hasn’t made a dent in the problems facing Seattle. How anyone can vote for her or even call her professional is beyond me.

      • Michael Ostrogorsky November 8, 2019 (12:19 pm)

Dear Anonymous Troll: Maybe you should try taking a civics class to understand how city government works. I am astounded how many people think city council members are little dictators, like their fuhrer, and can simply demand things get done the way YOU WANT. I voted for Lisa Herbold. She is a consummate professional. If you don’t like the fact that the overwhelming majority of my fellow West Seattleites agree with me, I would love to help you pack your bags.

        • Barton November 8, 2019 (1:59 pm)

          Overwhelming majority?

  • Oliver November 7, 2019 (7:04 pm)

Has anyone ever just walked up to Amazon and asked if they would be willing to helpin a meaningful way?

    • Busy November 7, 2019 (8:25 pm)

      I haven’t.  I would tho.

  • My two cents ... November 7, 2019 (8:01 pm)

Well if the results stay and we get Herbold for another term, maybe Nordstrom and Weyerhaeuser will be next in line for being the bad companies that they are … then after that, go after Monorail Espresso and  and every other business. Maybe we will get continued failed efforts to move seattle “forward” … assuming she is not jetting off to decry the bad influence of Seattle companies to other communities. BTW – herbold was just as bad with the attack ads … so don’t go calling for sainthood.

  • Doug November 7, 2019 (8:14 pm)

It’s a shame that Herbold will keep the seat. Thank you to all the West Seattle residents and businesses who stood up to her destructive policies.

    • Jort November 7, 2019 (10:07 pm)

“Destructive policies”?????????? This city is in the midst of its most prosperous economic boom in its history. Property values are at record levels and we’re home to some of the must successful businesses in the history of this planet. If what’s going on is “destructive,” I’m curious what “success” looks like.

  • OP November 7, 2019 (8:23 pm)

What in the Sam hell is the matter with you people. Are you even paying attention? She IS the problem.

    • David November 7, 2019 (8:45 pm)

It’s so wonderful to see the Tavelites perplexed and peeved and–as usual–clueless! Nothing but slurs that completely lack in eloquence. Break out the Gamay!

    • Michael Ostrogorsky November 8, 2019 (12:12 pm)

Hey Opie. You know what your fuhrer says, doncha? Love it or Leave!

  • Mj November 7, 2019 (9:46 pm)

Peter – I do not see the laws being enforced and when the SPD does make an arrest the perp is quickly released back out onto the  street.  Has Lisa done anything to stop this failed system?

    • david November 8, 2019 (8:53 am)

Perhaps those who voted for Tavel should bring this up with the the Police Chief and King County Justice system. What on earth does Lisa Herbold have to do with releasing criminals from holding cells or sentences that are meted out? Last I checked, City Council votes on a budget for law enforcement, and Lisa Herbold voted for an increased police budget. So what exactly is your beef?

  • SE November 7, 2019 (10:03 pm)

    THERE SHOULD BE TERM LIMITS.

    • WSB November 7, 2019 (10:47 pm)

Nobody mentioned in this story is a long-time elected official. Unless you’re arguing for one-and-done?

  • Scubafrog November 8, 2019 (12:16 am)

Gosh, the tavelites are poor-losers, I can hear traces of trump tweet-whining in every one of their posts.  Regardless, Lisa’s been doing fine.  She’ll keep doing a great job.  I’d have loved to seen the head tax enacted, corporations and the top 10% in the US need to pay more taxes.  It should be noted:  Herbold really won with a signifant lead.  I’d call that lead a Mandate.

    • david November 8, 2019 (8:57 am)

Absolutely! It’s been so fun reading posts by bitter Tavelites. The abundance of logical fallacies in their arguments and whining is eclipsed only by lack of eloquence. By any account, Lisa Herbold is a competent moderate who wants the best for her district. Unfortunately, Seattle is undergoing growing pains, and there is bound to be disenchantment. West Seattle and District 1 are still one of the most beautiful places in the USA to live. This “Let’s Make West Seattle Great Again” mantra of the Tavel crowd is pathetic.

  • Edie Neeson November 8, 2019 (6:44 am)

When will our state have an Individual Income Tax?  Seems to me such a tax could ameliorate excessive political spending by corporate interests.Genessee Hill

  • anonyme November 8, 2019 (7:09 am)

I agree with MJ’s comments.  A perfect example is the demise of Westwood Village.  While poor management is part of the problem,  crime is the major one.   Shoplifters have free rein, and anyone who tries to stop them is in more jeopardy than the criminals themselves.  The city council is directly responsible for this.  As for Brendan Kolding, it’s interesting that both Herbold and Tavel are now acknowledging that FEMA-style tents are a good idea, while both ridiculed the idea before the primary.  The other thing I’m bloody sick and tired of is having anyone who is not a lock-step uber-liberal branded as a Trump-supporting Nazi fascist hater.  This is the kind of spiel you hear from those unable or unwilling to come up with an intelligent argument, and are themselves the true “haters”.  Seattle is in dire need of some balance, and this kind of fanaticism is a recipe for disaster.  There used to be a liberalism that included logic, but no more.

  • Michael Ostrogorsky November 8, 2019 (12:08 pm)

But. . . But. . . But. . . the Seattle Times and all the Concerned Citizens on these comment threads promised me absolutely EVERYONE in Seattle hated the City Council, City Government, and especially Lisa Herbold. . .You mean to tell me these jokers don’t have a clue what they’re talking about? My god! How is that possible?

  • Huck November 9, 2019 (6:45 am)

Herbold and Sawant will slowly turn Seattle into a crime infested dump (which you could argue it already is). Once that first dose of high unemployment hits, you guys will still blame the rich for ALL your problems.

Sorry, comment time is over.
