WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Apartment-building search

ORIGINAL REPORT, SUNDAY AFTERNOON: Thanks for the texted tip about the big police response at The Huxley (4754 Fauntleroy Way SW). We went over to ask. Police told us they got a report of a possible burglary in the building, and the suspect may still be in the building, so they are searching with a K(. No other details.

ADDED MONDAY AFTERNOON: Still some details we haven’t been able to get, but we did confirm with SPD that one man was arrested. The 49-year-old suspect is in jail right now, held for investigation of drug violations as well as on a warrant related to a prior case.

We just moved in last week. I  doubt the leasing office will give us any type of update on this. Can someone please let us know what happened? Was this a resident? We saw a large assault rifle be placed into one of the cop cars.

Now that the media-relations office is open for the week, I have a request out for followup info and will publish whatever we find out.

It may have been the officer’s rifle. They are often deployed for tactical situations.

Another crime, can we have one day when there is not a robbery, assault, car break in?for those  of you who are new, west Seattle at one time was a quiet safe community. Example when perps know there will be minimal or no consequences to breaking the law,

We actually had two days this week without crime reports – no reader reports and nothing that hit our radar for checking out – Tuesday and Saturday. (Doesn’t mean no crime happened, just that we had no crime stories those days.)

As for nostalgia, crime rates are lower these days:

The ’90s in particular were scary. Take 1993:

Yes, the early-90s were a very scary time in West Seattle. It’s like Bellevue here now compared to 27-28 years ago. The High Point housing projects were particularly dangerous and it spawned crime all over the peninsula. I lived just a few blocks away from them. The Gaurdian One sheriff’s helicopter was a nearly-nightly visitor to West Seattle back then.

        Huh?

If being poor in this area is a crime then yes we have always had a huge criminal element.  We will always have what we have at Alki, people getting together and drinking and smoking a little to much. Wealthy people did not gravitate to this area as much because of the super fund sites.  If you want to villianize a group over every police call do it . Realize white collar crimes do not seem to be prosecuted in the city or I’m not hearing about them . Some very rich will break the law because they have the funds to pay a citation. I once new a billionaires son who mentioned upwards of 500 parking citations he had but was waiting for the city program that allowed him to pay them off at a reduced rate and let him retain his liscence It was his mom who would be the only one to take his keys. That was back in the 90s.

It was quite a safe community until the west seattle bridge was built and allowed more people to live in it. I think that’s what is meant.

You must have all forgotten that we still live in a City. West Seattle is not immune to violence and crime despite a lot of people thinking that it’s ‘safe’.  More and more people are moving to this City every day and West Seattle is a sought after neighborhood. I grew up on Cap. Hill in the 90’s where this kind of stuff happened all the time but you learn street smarts and understand this is a City and things like this happen. Crime will happen whether or not the criminals think they can get away with it and will be that way until the end of time. West Seattle residents are so entitled sometimes it’s really sad. “It never used to be this way”, “omg, a homeless person, call the Police”. Calm down. There are worse things happening in the world.

I’ve lived in WS all my life and I don’t have any entitled family or friends. We all work for a living, own homes and want our neighborhoods to be safe for all from children to teens to adults to seniors. However, Seattle’s unsafe, dangerous law-enforcement policies do not allow SPD’s police officers to do their job effectively in protecting Seattle’s citizens’ or their lives let alone controlling criminal activity 24/7. There’s also a police officer shortage and problems with recruitment.  It’s extremely frightening to be threatened with bodily harm by a mentally ill person or a person high on drugs which has happened to me and others in WS. Being cavalier about dangerous streets errs on the side of intolerance for a safe community which is bizarre thinking.

To seattlite I want you safe and your loved ones safe. Some of the policies in place have to do with civil rights that are erroded and neglected to such a point people forget they have them. We paint things with a broad brush .  This thread starts off as a crime committed but then feeds into a fear people have of each other. It keeps a lot of people who work for low wages doing jobs others do not want to do (WOMEN) in substandard conditions. I hold your same fears sometimes I try to talk to alot of people though it helps to get a better perspective  .
